What makes brands achieve iconic status?
We propose that brands do not achieve iconic status by chance. This article focuses on how brands manage iconic status effectively. Drawing on an exploratory study of iconic brands, we identify a brand's ability to inspire consumers and connect with them on a personal level as well as its visual identity and presence in consumers' mind as critical elements of brand status. Consumers' perceptions of a sample of brands were investigated through in-depth interviews, followed by the examination of these brands' activities through case-study analyses. The alignment between brand strategies and the relevant features highlighted by consumers was then assessed. A comprehensive framework for achieving iconicity is presented and discussed.Working Pape
Natural Coral Colonization of a Marina Seawall in Singapore
Marinas require extensive modification of a natural coast. The resulting modified habitat is known to supportchanged biological communities but the ability of tropical marinas to function as a surrogate habitat forscleractinian corals has not been well investigated. An assessment of scleractinian corals naturallycolonising a nine-year-old marina seawall in Singapore indicated 26 genera from 13 families, of whichPectinia and Turbinaria were the most dominant. Most colonies measured 10 – 25 cm in diameter. Reefs ofadjacent islands provided the larval source while the marina's environmental conditions favored larvalrecruitment and growth. Specific larval settlement preferences as well as sediment rejection capabilities ofthe two most common genera could have contributed to their dominance. The study showed that the seawallof a marina can support scleractinian coral communities and with relevant management, can significantlyenhance marine biodiversity
Benefits for public healthcare buildings towards Net Zero Energy Buildings (NZEBs): initial reviews
NZEBs concept has received incrementing attention especially since European
Union Parliament are progressively moving towards regulation in which all new buildings to
be “nearly Zero-Energy” Buildings by 2020. Even though this concept delivers promising
benefits, previous studies found that the benefit of NZEB is still in vague to the Malaysian
construction industry, mostly for healthcare buildings. The NZEBs concept implementation is
critical in healthcare building as it seen as a key part of the needed transition towards
sustainable development. This paper aims to define benefits of NZEBs practices through initial
investigation among architects. Several existing energies works of literature and pilot studies
by using semi-structured interviews were conducted. The findings divulge that, although the
term ‘NZEBs design strategies’ is not being used largely across construction industry in
Malaysia, some sustainable practices related to the design stage of construction has been
implemented. The findings are also promising in growing awareness, practices and
implementation of NZEBs design strategies by the practitioner in Malaysia. It is foreseen that
the paper will provide a straightforward knowledge for future research in NZEBs design
strategies practices for healthcare buildings construction in Malaysia
Safety and efficacy of laxatives after major abdominal surgery: systematic review and meta-analysis
Background: Recovery of gastrointestinal function is often delayed after major abdominal surgery, leading to postoperative ileus (POI). Enhanced recovery protocols recommend laxatives to reduce the duration of POI, but evidence is unclear. This systematic review aimed to assess the safety and efficacy of laxative use after major abdominal surgery. Methods: Ovid MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane Library and PubMed databases were searched from inception to May 2019 to identify eligible RCTs focused on elective open or minimally invasive major abdominal surgery. The primary outcome was time taken to passage of stool. Secondary outcomes were time taken to tolerance of diet, time taken to flatus, length of hospital stay, postoperative complications and readmission to hospital. Results: Five RCTs with a total of 416 patients were included. Laxatives reduced the time to passage of stool (mean difference (MD) −0⋅83 (95 per cent c.i. −1⋅39 to −0⋅26) days; P = 0⋅004), but there was significant heterogeneity between studies for this outcome measure. There was no difference in time to passage of flatus (MD −0⋅17 (−0⋅59 to 0⋅25) days; P = 0⋅432), time to tolerance of diet (MD −0⋅01 (−0⋅12 to 0⋅10) days; P = 0⋅865) or length of hospital stay (MD 0⋅01(−1⋅36 to 1⋅38) days; P = 0⋅992). There were insufficient data available on postoperative complications for meta-analysis. Conclusion: Routine postoperative laxative use after major abdominal surgery may result in earlier passage of stool but does not influence other postoperative recovery parameters. Better data are required for postoperative complications and validated outcome measures.N. N. Dudi-Venkata, W. Seow, H. M. Kroon, S. Bedrikovetski, J. W. Moore, M. L. Thomas, and T. Sammou
Extracts of Feijoa Inhibit Toll-Like Receptor 2 Signaling and Activate Autophagy Implicating a Role in Dietary Control of IBD
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a heterogeneous chronic inflammatory disease affecting the gut with limited treatment success for its sufferers. This suggests the need for better understanding of the different subtypes of the disease as well as nutritional interventions to compliment current treatments. In this study we assess the ability of a hydrophilic feijoa fraction (F3) to modulate autophagy a process known to regulate inflammation, via TLR2 using IBD cell lines

Defect-unbinding and the Bose-glass transition in layered superconductors
The low-field Bose-glass transition temperature in heavy-ion irradiated
Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_8+d increases progressively with increasing density of
irradiation-induced columnar defects, but saturates for densities in excess of
1.5 x10^9 cm^-2. The maximum Bose-glass temperature corresponds to that above
which diffusion of two-dimensional pancake vortices between different vortex
lines becomes possible, and above which the ``line-like'' character of vortices
is lost. We develop a description of the Bose-glass line that is in excellent
quantitative agreement with the experimental line obtained for widely different
values of track density and material parameters.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev. Let
N-acetyltransferase 2 (NAT2) gene polymorphisms in colon and lung cancer patients
BACKGROUND: N-acetyltransferase 2 (NAT2) metabolizes arylamines and hydrazines moeities found in many therapeutic drugs, chemicals and carcinogens. The gene encoding NAT2 is polymorphic, thus resulting in rapid or slow acetylator phenotypes. The acetylator status may, therefore, predispose drug-induced toxicities and cancer risks, such as bladder, colon and lung cancer. Indeed, some studies demonstrate a positive association between NAT2 rapid acetylator phenotype and colon cancer, but results are inconsistent. The role of NAT2 acetylation status in lung cancer is likewise unclear, in which both the rapid and slow acetylator genotypes have been associated with disease. METHODS: We investigated three genetic variations, c.481C>T, c.590G>A (p.R197Q) and c.857G>A (p.G286E), of the NAT2 gene, which are known to result in a slow acetylator phenotype. Using validated PCR-RFLP assays, we genotyped 243 healthy unrelated Caucasian control subjects, 92 colon and 67 lung cancer patients for these genetic variations. As there is a recent meta-analysis of NAT2 studies on colon cancer (unlike in lung cancer), we have also undertaken a systematic review of NAT2 studies on lung cancer, and we incorporated our results in a meta-analysis consisting of 16 studies, 3,865 lung cancer patients and 6,077 control subjects. RESULTS: We did not obtain statistically significant differences in NAT2 allele and genotype frequencies in colon cancer patients and control group. Certain genotypes, however, such as [c.590AA+c.857GA] and [c.590GA+c.857GA] were absent among the colon cancer patients. Similarly, allele frequencies in lung cancer patients and controls did not differ significantly. Nevertheless, there was a significant increase of genotypes [c.590GA] and [c.481CT+c.590GA], but absence of homozygous c.590AA and [c.590AA+c.857GA] in the lung cancer group. Meta-analysis of 16 NAT2 studies on lung cancer did not evidence an overall association of the rapid or slow acetylator status to lung cancer. Similarly, the summary odds ratios obtained with stratified meta-analysis based on ethnicity, and smoking status were not significant. CONCLUSION: Our study failed to show an overall association of NAT2 genotypes to either colon or lung cancer risk
