    The purpose of this study is to investigate Second Generation Ethanol’s (SGE) production cycle in order to understand the level of SGE’s technological intensity in the integrated cycle. The suggested methodology comprises of a review of literature surrounding the requirements and indexes of technological intensity. A wide selection of database and review of specialized literature have been described to demonstrate the proposed discussion and conclusions. It has been observed that SGE puts forward a higher level of technological intensity in relation to First Generation Ethanol (FGE)

    Interaction between lamellar twinning and catalyst dynamics in spontaneous core-shell InGaP nanowires

In order to keep the orientation stable, a balance in growth rates for these different facets must be reached. We report here the observation of stable, micron-long -oriented InGaP nanowires with a spontaneous core-shell structure. We show that stacking fault formation in the crystal region corresponding to the {111} A facet termination provides a stable NW/NP interface for growth along the direction. During sample cool down, however, the catalyst migrates to a lateral {111} B facet, allowing the growth of branches perpendicular to the initial orientation. In addition to that, we show that the core-shell structure is non-concentric, most likely due to the asymmetry between the facets formed in the NW sidewall; this effect generates stress along the nanowire, which can be relieved through bending.Semiconductor nanowires oriented along the [211] direction usually present twins parallel to their axis.     Smelting and recycling evidences from the Late Bronze Age habitat site of Baiões (Viseu, Portugal)

    Many aspects of bronze production during Late Bronze Age in Western Europe are so far unknown. In the present study selected artefact fragments and metallurgical debris, which include a slag fragment, from the emblematic Late Bronze Age habitat site of Castro da Senhora da Guia de Baio˜es (Viseu, Portugal) have been studied by optical microscopy, micro-EDXRF, SEM–EDS and XRD. Evidences were found for bronze production involving smelting and recycling. Compositional analysis showed that the artefacts are made of a bronze with 133 wt.% Sn (average and one standard deviation) and a low impurity pattern, namely <0.1 wt.% Pb, being comparable with the composition of other bronzes from the same region (the Central Portuguese Beiras). This alloy is generally different from elsewhere Atlantic and Mediterranean bronzes, which show frequently slightly lower Sn contents and higher impurity patterns,namely Pb which is often present as an alloying element. The present study gives further support to early proposals suggesting the exploration of the Western Iberian tin resources during Late Bronze Age, and besides that, it indicates that metalworking and smelting could have been a commonplace activity requiring no specific facilities, being bronze produced at a domestic scale in this Western extreme of Europe

    Acupuncture at “Zusanli” (St.36) and “Sanyinjiao” (SP.6) Points on the Gastrointestinal Tract: A Study of the Bioavailability of 99mTc-Sodium Pertechnetate in Rats

    The objective of this study is to investigate the differences of acupuncture effect between the Zusanli (St.36) and Sanyinjiao (SP.6) points on the gastrointestinal-tract (GIT) segment performed by the bioavailability of 99mTc-sodium-pertechnetate (Na99mTcO4) in rats. Male Wistar rats (n = 21) were allocated into three groups of seven each. Group 1 was treated by acupuncture bilaterally at St.36; Group 2 at SP.6; and Group 3 was untreated (control). After 10 min of needle insertion in anesthetized rats, 0.3 mL of Na99mTcO4 (7.4 MBq) was injected via ocular-plexus. After 20 min, the exitus of animals was induced by cervical-dislocation and GIT organs isolated. However, immediately before the exitus procedure, blood was collected by cardiac-puncture for blood radio-labeling (BRL). The radioactivity uptake of the blood constituents was calculated together with the GIT organs by a well gamma counter. The percentage of injected dose per gram of tissue (%ID/g) of Na99mTcO4 was calculated for each GIT organs, while BRL was calculated in %ID. According to the one-way ANOVA, the stomach, jejunum, ileum from the treated groups (Group 1 and Group 2) had significant differences compared to the controls (Group 3). However, between the treated groups (Group 1 and Group 2), there were significant differences (P < .05) in the stomach, jejunum, ileum, cecum, transverse and rectum. In BRL analysis, Group 2 showed significant increase and decrease of the insoluble and soluble fractions of the blood cells, respectively (P < .0001). The authors suggest that St.36 may have a tendency of up-regulation effect on GIT, whereas SP.6, down-regulation effect. However, further rigorous experimental studies to examine the effectiveness of acupuncture in either acupuncture points need to be carried out

    Efficacy of Benralizumab in severe asthma in real life and focus on nasal polyposis

    Introduction: Severe asthma occurs in 5–10% of asthmatic patients, with nasal polyposis as one of the most frequent comorbidity. Benralizumab was recently marketed, thus we could analyse its effects in real-life in severe asthma, and compare the effects of the drug in patients with and without polyposis. Methods: Patients with severe asthma, receiving Benralizumab were enrolled in Italian asthma centres. The efficacy criteria for asthma (exacerbation rate, oral corticosteroid intake, hospitalizations, pulmonary function, exhaled nitric oxide) were evaluated at baseline and after 24 weeks of treatment. Patients were then sub-analysed according to the presence/absence of nasal polyposis. Results: Fifty-nine patients with severe uncontrolled asthma (21 males, age range 32–78) and treated with benralizumab for at least 24 weeks has been evaluated, showing significant improvements in asthma-related outcomes, except for pulmonary function and exhaled nitric oxide. This included a reduction in the sino-nasal outcome-22 score versus baseline of 13.7 points (p = .0037) in the 34 patients with nasal polyposis. Anosmia disappeared in 31% patients (p = .0034). When comparing the groups with and without nasal polyposis, a similar reduction of exacerbations was seen, with a greater reduction of the steroid dependence in patients with polyposis (−72% vs −53%; p &lt; .0001), whereas lung function was significantly more improved (12% vs 34%, p = .0064) without polyposis patients. Conclusions: Benralizumab, after 6 months of treatment, confirmed its efficacy in severe asthma, and also in nasal polyposis, which is the most frequent comorbidity. The efficacy of Benralizumab in reducing steroid dependence was even higher in patients with polyposis

    Economic analysis of antenatal screening for human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 in Brazil: an open access cost-utility model

    BACKGROUND: Human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) is a retrovirus that causes severe diseases, such as aggressive cancer or progressive neurological disease. HTLV-1 affects mainly people in areas with low human development index and can be transmitted from mother to child, primarily through breastfeeding. Refraining from breastfeeding is an effective intervention to reduce the risk of infection in infants. However, HTLV-1 antenatal screening is not offered globally. According to WHO, the scarcity of cost-effectiveness studies is considered one of the major barriers to the implementation of policies to prevent HTLV-1 infection. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the cost-effectiveness of antenatal screening and postnatal interventions to prevent HTLV-1 mother-to-child transmission in Brazil and to develop an open-access, editable, mathematical model that can be used by other countries and regions to assess different scenarios. METHODS: In this cost-utility analysis, we constructed a decision tree and a Markov model to assess the cost-effectiveness of HTLV-1 antenatal screening and postnatal interventions (ie, avoidance of breastfeeding, by suppression of lactation with cabergoline, and provision of formula feed) to reduce transmission. For our model, we used data from Brazil and we took the perspective of the public health-care system to estimate costs. FINDINGS: The implementation of both screening and interventions would result in the prevention of 1039 infections in infants every year in Brazil with an incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER) of US11415perqualityadjustedlifeyear(QALY).8811 415 per quality-adjusted life-year (QALY). 88% of all probabilistic sensitivity analysis simulations had ICER values lower than the Brazilian cost-effectiveness threshold (18 107·74 per QALY). HTLV-1 prevalence in pregnant women, the risk of HTLV-1 transmission when breastfeeding lasts for 6 months or more, and the cost of screening tests were the variables with the largest effect on ICER. INTERPRETATION: HTLV-1 antenatal screening is cost-effective in Brazil. An open-access model was developed, and this tool could be used to assess the cost-effectiveness of such policy globally, favouring the implementation of interventions to prevent HTLV-1 mother-to-child transmission worldwide.
