    Evaluating non-intrusive energy retrofits for the built heritage of historic centre of Oporto

    Traditional building materials and techniques should be preserved when selecting retrofit strategies. The most recurrent energy retrofit strategies proposed for the historic centre of Oporto are mainly fo-cused on achieving, or even overlapping, the reference U-values established for the external envelope on national energy regulations, although historic sites are not obliged to comply with it. On the other hand, national cultural heritage preservation policies, by allowing alterations on these historic buildings interior, validate the adding of thermal insulation materials on internal walls. Nevertheless, these inter-ventions may put to risk architectural patrimonial values, hence, sustainable ones. A more opportune intervention could be the enhancement of the windows performance, due to its most common bad state of conservation. This article analyses the performance of two non-intrusive retrofit strategies, in a rep-resentative model of these buildings: the enhancement of ventilation and the substitution of the single glazed windows for double glazed ones, and the two combined. On a first approach, using as a reference the heating loads limits established in the energy regulation of 2013 and the normative methodology, it is calculated the corresponding number of hours of daily heating use, in order to stand below these limits. The results obtained showed that this is attainable, in comfortable conditions of heating use. In order to achieve more accurate results and conclusions a dynamic simulation was performed using energy models, for the heating and cooling season. The enhancement of ventilation proved to be the most effective retrofit strategy

    The City of Refuge in Paris (1929-30) is an experimental building where Le Corbusier wanted to apply his famous proposal of environmental conditioning systems of buildings through the combination of two technological advances that supported his concept of machine à habiter: the mur neutralisant and respiration exacte.This paper presents a historical journey from the first attempts to carry out these two technological innovations to a complete informative documentation on the major decisions and changes made in the City of Refuge by collecting letters and reports of the main actors who intervened in it. The aim of this study is to investigate environmental conditioning through passive and active strategies in Le Corbusier's architecture, carrying this study out in the year 2013, which marks the 50th anniversary of his death. The results and findings have allowed us to complete the analysis that architectural critics have produced on the City of Refuge, through understanding the real behaviour of the building as originally built, as well as the success that the combination of the mur neutralisant and the respiration exacte, advanced technologies for their time, could have had. At present these are once again being used in the design of active façades which deal with existing concerns about sustainability and energy efficiency

    The current importance of cultural heritage is traduced in recuperation programs of historic heritage. One of these working lines is the rehabilitation of churches for their conditioning for cultural uses. Intervention on ecclesiastic spaces should respond to acoustic conditioning.The aim of this work is to study the acoustic conditions of the Santa María de la Mota Church, in Montoro (Cordoba), starting from values measured in situ and by means of computer simulation. This church, from the XIIIth century, was restored and adapted for cultural uses, but presents acoustic disfunctions. Therefore, architectural solutions to obtain a correct acoustical rehabilitation have been proposed, both for theatral and musical use

    Evaluating constructive and typological retrofits in solid masonry historic buildings S. Alves & J. J. Sendra Instituto Universitario de Arquitectura y Ciencias de la Construcción, Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura, Universidad de Sevilla, Spain Abstract The historic centre of Oporto, Unesco’s World Heritage, should not be acknowledged merely as a set of harmonic façades to preserve. National cultural heritage preservation policies tend to interpret it that way, by allowing alterations on its building’s interior. On the other hand, energy commitments assumed, lean towards a propensity to encompass these masonry buildings on this challenge. Although energy regulations allow the exclusion of these buildings, some common retrofit strategies are often proposed. The enhancement of the buildings envelope by adding thermal insulation materials on the interior, or the substitution of single glazed window for a double glazed one are clearly efficient on reducing the envelope’s U-value. However, given the specificity of these buildings morphology and its constructive system, there is both an architectural and energetic heritage to preserve. This paper aims to establish this sustainable inherent value, by exploring the potential of a non-intrusive retrofit and its influence on the most expressive energy demand in Oporto – the heating loads. Three models of typological retrofits were defined, using as a criterion the most usual ownership of these buildings. Two retrofit strategies were simulated within these models, according to national regulation’s methodology: the enhancement of ventilation and the substitution of the single glazed windows for double glazed ones. Analysis of data obtained evidenced the energetic potential of these buildings on its genesis. The enhancement of ventilation showed to be a most expressive measure in order to reduce operating energy for heating
