(Re) defining salesperson motivation: current status, main challenges, and research directions

The construct of motivation is one of the central themes in selling and sales management research. Yet, to-date no review article exists that surveys the construct (both from an extrinsic and intrinsic motivation context), critically evaluates its current status, examines various key challenges apparent from the extant research, and suggests new research opportunities based on a thorough review of past work. The authors explore how motivation is defined, major theories underpinning motivation, how motivation has historically been measured, and key methodologies used over time. In addition, attention is given to principal drivers and outcomes of salesperson motivation. A summarizing appendix of key articles in salesperson motivation is provided

Practical guidelines for rigor and reproducibility in preclinical and clinical studies on cardioprotection

The potential for ischemic preconditioning to reduce infarct size was first recognized more than 30 years ago. Despite extension of the concept to ischemic postconditioning and remote ischemic conditioning and literally thousands of experimental studies in various species and models which identified a multitude of signaling steps, so far there is only a single and very recent study, which has unequivocally translated cardioprotection to improved clinical outcome as the primary endpoint in patients. Many potential reasons for this disappointing lack of clinical translation of cardioprotection have been proposed, including lack of rigor and reproducibility in preclinical studies, and poor design and conduct of clinical trials. There is, however, universal agreement that robust preclinical data are a mandatory prerequisite to initiate a meaningful clinical trial. In this context, it is disconcerting that the CAESAR consortium (Consortium for preclinicAl assESsment of cARdioprotective therapies) in a highly standardized multi-center approach of preclinical studies identified only ischemic preconditioning, but not nitrite or sildenafil, when given as adjunct to reperfusion, to reduce infarct size. However, ischemic preconditioning—due to its very nature—can only be used in elective interventions, and not in acute myocardial infarction. Therefore, better strategies to identify robust and reproducible strategies of cardioprotection, which can subsequently be tested in clinical trials must be developed. We refer to the recent guidelines for experimental models of myocardial ischemia and infarction, and aim to provide now practical guidelines to ensure rigor and reproducibility in preclinical and clinical studies on cardioprotection. In line with the above guideline, we define rigor as standardized state-of-the-art design, conduct and reporting of a study, which is then a prerequisite for reproducibility, i.e. replication of results by another laboratory when performing exactly the same experiment

Dr. Efraim Otero: Dentro del programa de Mesas Redondas que ha organizado para el presente año la Sociedad Colombiana de Endocrinología, hemos tenido la oportunidad y el gran placer de poder invitar a una de ellas al Profesor Hans Selye, cuyos trabajos sobre el Síndrome General de Adaptación y su extraordinaria implicación en la Endocrinología moderna Uds. todos conocen. En realidad esta Mesa Redonda se intenta como un cuestionario final para el Dr. Selye, después de las Conferencias que ha querido a bien darnos en esta Aula y en el Aula de la Facultad de Derecho. De tal manera que en realidad los miembros de la Sociedad Colombiana de Endocrinología, que inicialmente pensábamos desarrollar también algunos temas, hemos decidido elaborar un temario con el que todos Uds. puedan participar, que está escrito en el diapositivo que se vé y sobre el cual se formularán preguntas por escrito. La Mesa se encargará de pasar estas preguntas de acuerdo con el interés general y de acuerdo también con el tiempo, que todos sabemos es limitado. El Profesor Selye iniciará el tema con una exposición sobre un primer punto, concepto presente o actualización del Síndrome General de Adaptación. Luego se irán formulando las preguntas que el panel de la Mesa seleccione para pasarlas al Profesor Selye
