    Young film critics

This thesis explores whether teaching a group of 9th grade pupils basic film-related theory and vocabulary has any impact on their written reflections about films. The thesis question is “Does pupil reflection of visual narratives evolve with short-term teaching?”. To answer this question, I initiated a qualitative intervention in a classroom, where I conducted three lessons about various cinematic techniques and their effect on the film and the viewer. Before and after the intervention the pupils watched a different short film and wrote a review for it. These reviews were used as the data in a thematic analysis to detect any difference in reflection and vocabulary. The findings indicate that a few of the pupils who already reflected well had improved reflections when they could incorporate how the film’s devices affected them and the film. Other pupils who only wrote a summary for the first review now could incorporate their opinion and reflection into their reviews. For the average pupils, there was a slight increase in vocabulary use, but no found increase in reflection. Despite marginal findings, the study thematizes the importance of working with film and film-related perspectives in English teaching. Film is an increasingly important part of children's and young people's lives, and heightened attention to visual and cinematic means and devices should form a central part of what we consider modern literacy

Ethical Leadership and Prohibitive Voice – the Role of Leadership and Organisational Identification

    Get PDF
This article extends previous research on ethical leadership and voice behavior, by investigating the relationship between ethical leadership and prohibitive voice. Prohibitive voice is defined as speaking up with concerns or worries regarding factors that may harm organisational functioning. The article reports on a cross- sectional study of Norwegian employees, investigating the relationship between ethical leadership, leadership identification, organisational identification and prohibitive voice. In the article leadership identification is understood as a process where the employee incorporates the leader’s values and goals into his or her self- concept. Organisational identification on the other hand is when the employee starts seeing the organisational values, norms and goals as his or her own. Testing our results in a dual-process model, we find that ethical leadership is positively and significantly related to prohibitive voice. Moreover, we find that this effect is mediated by organizational identification. We find no significant mediation effect of leadership identification. Implication for theory and research are discussed

Efficient and crucial quality control of HAP1 cell ploidy status

    Get PDF
The near-haploid human cell line HAP1 recently became a popular subject for CRISPR/Cas9 editing, since only one allele requires modification. Through the gene-editing service at Horizon Discovery, there are at present more than 7500 edited cell lines available and the number continuously increases. The haploid nature of HAP1 is unstable as cultures become diploid with time. Here, we demonstrated some fundamental differences between haploid and diploid HAP1 cells, hence underlining the need for taking control over ploidy status in HAP1 cultures prior to phenotyping. Consequently, we optimized a procedure to determine the ploidy of HAP1 by flow cytometry in order to obtain diploid cultures and avoid ploidy status as an interfering variable in experiments. Furthermore, in order to facilitate this quality control, we validated a size-based cell sorting procedure to obtain the diploid culture more rapidly. Hence, we provide here two streamlined protocols for quality controlling the ploidy of HAP1 cells and document their validity and necessity.publishedVersio

Is long-bout sedentary behaviour associated with long-term glucose levels 3 months after acute ischaemic stroke? A prospective observational cohort study

    Get PDF
Background and purpose Sedentary behaviour is a risk factor for vascular disease and stroke patients are more sedentary than their age-matched peers. The association with glucose levels, as a potential mediator, is unclear, and we have investigated the association between long-bout sedentary behaviour and long-term glucose levels in stroke survivors. Methods This study uses data from the Norwegian Cognitive Impairment After Stroke study, a multicentre cohort study. The patients were recruited at hospital admission for acute stroke, and the follow-up was done at the outpatient clinic. Sedentary behaviour—being in a sitting or reclining position—was registered 3 months after stroke using position transition data from the body-worn sensor activPAL attached to the unaffected thigh. A MATLAB script was developed to extract activity data from 08:00 to 10:00 for 4 days and to categorise the data into four bout-length categories. The primary outcome was glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c), analysed at 3 months. Regression models were used to analyse the association between HbA1c and sedentary behaviour in the whole population and stratified based on a diagnosis of diabetes mellitus (DM). Age, body mass index and the use of antidiabetic drugs were added as covariates into the models. Results From a total of 815 included patients, 379 patients fulfilled the inclusion criteria for this study. We found no association between time in sedentary behaviour and HbA1c in the whole stroke population. We found time in sedentary behaviour in bouts of ≄90 min to be associated with a higher HbA1c in patients with DM. Conclusion Long-bout sedentary time is associated with a higher HbA1c in patients with DM 3 months after ischaemic stroke. Future research should investigate the benefit of breaking up sedentary time as a secondary preventive measure.publishedVersio
