Preliminary report
Following the identification of two autochthonous cases of dengue type 1 on 3 October 2012, an outbreak of dengue fever has been reported in Madeira, Portugal. As of 25 November, 1,891 cases have been detected on the island where the vector Aedes aegypti had been established in some areas since 2005. This event represents the first epidemic of dengue fever in Europe since 1928 and concerted control measures have been initiated by local health authorities.publishersversionpublishe
Clinical study on the melarsoprol-related encephalopathic syndrome: risk factors and HLA association
Melarsoprol administration for the treatment of late-stage human African trypanosomiasis (HAT) is associated with the development of an unpredictable and badly characterized encephalopathic syndrome (ES), probably of immune origin, that kills approximately 50% of those affected. We investigated the characteristics and clinical risk factors for ES, as well as the association between the Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) complex and the risk for ES in a case-control study. Late-stage Gambiense HAT patients treated with melarsoprol and developing ES (69 cases) were compared to patients not suffering from the syndrome (207 controls). Patients were enrolled in six HAT treatment centres in Angola and in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Standardized clinical data was obtained from all participants before melarsoprol was initiated. Class I (HLA-A, HLA-B, HLA-Cw) and II (HLA-DR) alleles were determined by PCR-SSOP methods in 62 ES cases and 189 controls. The principal ES pattern consisted in convulsions followed by a coma, whereas ES with exclusively mental changes was not observed. Oedema, bone pain, apathy, and a depressed humour were associated with a higher risk of ES, while abdominal pain, coma, respiratory distress, and a Babinski sign were associated with higher ES-associated mortality. Haplotype C*14/B*15 was associated with an elevated risk for ES (OR: 6.64; p-value: 0.008). Haplotypes A*23/C*14, A*23/B*15 and DR*07/B*58 also showed a weaker association with ES. This result supports the hypothesis that a genetically determined peculiar type of immune response confers susceptibility for ES
Paratuberculosis in Sheep from Serra da Estrela Region
Being Paratuberculosis a chronic disease of difficult diagnosis and having suspicious of her presence in Serra da Estrela ovine’s effectives, it’s essential to prove this fact and establish a fast, efficient and viable diagnosis protocol, to be able to identified flock’s carriers of disease cases and, subsequently, being developed an eradication plane that allows her control.
Therefore, in this work were tested several diagnosis’ methods but this report reflects mostly on the histopatological diagnosis’ methods, including the general condition observation before necropsy elaboration, necropsy, histopathological exam and Ziehl-Neelsen’s stain method, as well as Immunohistochemical`s method. A analogy with serological diagnosis was made.
Of the 46 animals sent to necropsy, 20 showed positive reaction to ELISA (enzyme linked immunosorbent assay), 2 doubtful reaction and 21 were negative. The AGID was only positive in 4 animals. The symptoms were compatible in 34 animals. The macroscopic’s exam was compatible in 40 animals. The histopathology was compatible in 26 animals. The Ziehl-Neelsen’s stain of tissues revealed acid fast bacterias in 20 animals. In Immunohistochemical method 20 animals were positives
Synthesis, structure and physical properties of luminescent Pr(III) Ăź-diketonate complexes
Near infrared lanthanide(III)-based light conversion molecular devices (LCMDs) are emerging as a promising class of materials for organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) in some niche technologies. Three of these molecular materials -two highly coordinated Pr3+ Ăź-diketonate monomers and a dimer- are presented and their structure and properties are discussed. Particular emphasis is placed on the solid-to-solid transformation observed for the homodinuclear compound
Induced response of soybeans to phakopsora pachyrhizi inoculation and alternativa products used in organic production system.
Alternative products for soybean Asian rust (Phakopsora pachyrhizi) management in organic production system were tested. Among them, calda viçosa (CV, mixture of Cu, Zn and Mg sulfates), Fish Fertil" (FF, hydrolyzed organic based on crustacean shell and marine fish, rich in chitosan), and sodium silicate (55) were selected for defense induction studies. Sovbean sown in greenhouse, at V3 development stage, was sprayed with alternative products and inoculated or not-inoculated with spores of P. pachyrhizi. Control plants were neither sprayed with products nor fungus inoculated. At O (before treatment) and 72, 96 and 120 hours after treatments, leaves were collected, extracted in MeOH, filtered, and HPLC injected for identification and quantification of compounds. In general, FF + fungus plant treated increased isoflavone concentrations and responded faster than the other treatments. Malonyl genistin, malonyl daidzin and malonyl glycitin concentrations of were approximately, four and 90 times (72h) and two (96h) times greater, respectively, compared to previous analysis, in fungus + FF treated plants. In this treatment, genistein and daidzein concentration also increased at 72h after treatment. Acethyl daidzin concentration increased in most of treatments, but was bigger in FF + fungus, 72h after treatment. Aglycones (genistein, daidzein and glycitein) concentration was lower compared to glycosides. However, FF has been exhaustively tested for management of phytopathogens in flowers and fruits, its role in soybean disease management needs additional experiments. Thus, for further elucidation P. pachyrhizi management by using FF,tests with pure chitosan is the next step of our studies
