Increasing Sustainability of Logistic Networks by Reducing Product Losses: A Network DEA Approach
This paper considers a multiproduct supply network, in which losses (e.g., spoilage of perishable products) can occur at either the nodes or the arcs. Using observed data, a Network Data Envelopment Analysis (NDEA) approach is proposed to assess the efficiency of the product flows in varying periods. Losses occur in each process as the observed output flows are lower than the observed input flows. The proposed NDEA model computes, within the NDEA technology, input and output targets for each process. The target operating points correspond to the minimum losses attainable using the best observed practice. The efficiency scores are computed comparing the observed losses with the minimum feasible losses. In addition to computing relative efficiency scores, an overall loss factor for each product and each node and link can be determined, both for the observed data and for the computed targets. A detailed illustration and an experimental design are used to study and validate the proposed approach. The results indicate that the proposed approach can identify and remove the inefficiencies in the observed data and that the potential spoilage reduction increases with the variability in the losses observed in the different periods.Ministerio de Ciencia DPI2017-85343-PFondo Europeo de Desarrollo Regional DPI2017-85343-
Revisiting the determinacy on New Keynesian Models
The goal of this paper is to shed light on the determinacy question that
arises in New Keynesian models as result of a combination of several monetary
policy rules; in these models, we provide conditions to guarantee existence and
uniqueness of equilibrium by means of results that are obtained from
theoretical analysis. In particular, we show that Taylor--like rules in
interest rate setting are not the only way to reach determinacy of the rational
expectations equilibrium in the New Keynesian setting. The key technical tool
that we use for that purposes is the so--called Budan--Fourier Theorem, that we
review along the paper.Comment: 16 pages, comments are welcom
Medieval medical recipes in London, Wellcome Library, MSS 404 and 5262
This paper seeks to explore the similarities between different unidentified texts, chiefly London, Wellcome Library MSS 404 and 5262, which are catalogued as a leechbook and a recipe collection, respectively. For the purpose, a brief description of each text will be first provided; then, the recipes in these texts will be analysed and their connections will be highlighted with a view to casting some light on possibly shared material and textual tradition.Universidad de Málaga. A closed-form solution to predict short-range surface plasmons in thin films and its application to hole arrays
A theoretical study of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) in ultrathin lossy
metal films is presented. The dispersion relation of such films is well known
and can be solved numerically to obtain a combination of long-range (LR-) and
short-range (SR-) eigenmodes. In this contribution, a simple solution for the
SR-SPPs is derived. An approximation for the LR- eigenmodes can be found
elsewhere. To validate the approximation, a two dimensional (2D) periodic array
of small holes is studied subsequently. The spectral response of the array is
obtained by full-wave simulations and the results compared with those
calculated analytically, showing an excellent agreement for small holes
