    Get PDF

Effective Hamiltonian of Liquid-Vapor Curved Interfaces in Mean Field

We analyze a one-component simple fluid in a liquid-vapor coexistence state, which forms an arbitrarily curved interface. By using an approach based on density functional theory, we obtain an exact and simple expression for the grand potential at the level of mean field approximation that depends on the density profile and the short-range interaction potential. By introducing the step-function approximation for the density profile, and using general geometric arguments, we expand the grand potential in powers of the principal curvatures of the surface and find consistency with the Helfrich phenomenological model in the second order approximation.Comment: To appear in JC

    Get PDF

An experimental approach to the effect of attentional focus

    Get PDF

Peritoneal repairing cells: A type of bone marrow derived progenitor cells involved in mesothelial regeneration

The peritoneal mesothelium exhibits a high regenerative ability. Peritoneal regeneration is concomitant with the appearance, in the coelomic cavity, of a free-floating population of cells whose origin and functions are still under discussion. We have isolated and characterized this cell population and we have studied the process of mesothelial regeneration through flow cytometry and confocal microscopy in a murine model lethally irradiated and reconstituted with GFP-expressing bone marrow cells. In unoperated control mice, most free cells positive for mesothelin, a mesothelial marker, are green fluorescent protein (GFP). However, 24 hrs after peritoneal damage, free mesothelin+/ GFP+ cells appear in peritoneal lavages. Cultured lavage peritoneal cells show colocalization of GFP with mesothelial (mesothelin, cytokeratin) and fibroblastic markers. Immunohistochemical staining of the peritoneal wall also revealed colocalization of GFP with mesothelial markers and with procollagen-1 and smooth muscle α-actin. This was observed in the injured area as well as in the surrounding not-injured peritoneal surfaces. These cells, which we herein call peritoneal repairing cells (PRC), are very abundant 1 week after surgery covering both the damaged peritoneal wall and the surrounding uninjured area. However, they become very scarce 1 month later, when the mesothelium has completely healed. We suggest that PRC constitute a type of monocyte-derived cells, closely related with the tissue-repairing cells known as 'fibrocytes' and specifically involved in peritoneal reparation. Thus, our results constitute a synthesis of the different scenarios hitherto proposed about peritoneal regeneration, particularly recruitment of circulating progenitor cells and adhesion of free-floating coelomic cells. © 2011 The Authors Journal of Cellular and Molecular Medicine © 2011 Foundation for Cellular and Molecular Medicine/Blackwell Publishing Ltd.(Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación), RD06/0010/0015 (TerCel network, ISCIII), P06-CTS-01614, P08-CTS-03618 (Junta de AndalucÌa) and LSHM-CT-2005–018630 (VI framework, UE)Peer Reviewe

Failure propagation in GMPLS optical rings: CTMC model and performance analysis

    Get PDF
Network reliability and resilience has become a key design parameter for network operators and Internet service providers. These often seek ways to have their networks fully operational for at least 99.999% of the time, regardless of the number and type of failures that may occur in their networks. This article presents a continuous-time Markov chain model to characterise the propagation of failures in optical GMPLS rings. Two types of failures are considered depending on whether they affect only the control plane, or both the control and data planes of the node. Additionally, it is assumed that control failures propagate along the ring infecting neighbouring nodes, as stated by the Susceptible-Infected-Disabled (SID) propagation model taken from epidemic-based propagation models. A few numerical examples are performed to demonstrate that the CTMC model provides a set of guidelines for selecting the appropriate repair rates in order to attain specific availability requirements, both in the control plane and the data plane. This work is partially supported by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation project TEC 2009-10724 and by the Generalitat de Catalunya research support programme (SGR-1202). Thermodynamic characterization of deep eutectic solvents at high pressures

    Get PDF
Despite the large spectrum of applications being reported for DESs over the last decade, their thermodynamic characterization is often neglected, hindering a better understanding of their nature, and the development of accurate and robust thermodynamic models to describe them, essential for the conceptual and design stages of new industrial processes. This work aims at decreasing such a gap in literature by reporting new experimental density and viscosity data in wide temperature and pressure ranges for the three archetypal DESs of cholinium chloride, as hydrogen bond acceptor, combined with either ethylene glycol, glycerol, or urea, as hydrogen bond donor. The experimental data measured in this work were then correlated using the Perturbed Chain - Statistical Associating Fluid Theory equation of state coupled with the Free Volume Theory to assess the performance of existing coarse-grained models when applied to the description of DESs. The modelling results obtained highlight the limitation of the existing models, since a correct prediction of DES density could not be achieved, reinforcing the need for viable alternative approaches for the development of coarse-grained models that are appropriate for the thermodynamic modelling of DESs.publishe

Broadband active differential array for the mid-frequency SKA band

This paper presents the design and characterization process of an active array demonstrator for the mid-frequency range (i.e., 300 MHz-1000 MHz) of the future Square Kilometre Array (SKA) radio telescope. This demonstrator, called FIDA3 (FG-IGN: Fundación General Instituto Geográfico Nacional - Differential Active Antenna Array), is part of the Spanish contribution for the SKA project. The main advantages provided by this design include the use of a dielectric-free structure, and the use of a fully-differential receiver in which differential low-noise amplifiers (LNAs) are directly connected to the balanced tapered-slot antennas (TSAs). First, the radiating structure and the differential low-noise amplifiers were separately designed and measured, obtaining good results (antenna elements with low voltage standing-wave ratios, array scanning capabilities up to 45°, and noise temperatures better than 52 K with low-noise amplifiers at room temperature). The potential problems due to the differential nature of the proposed solution are discussed, so some effective methods to overcome such limitations are proposed. Second, the complete active antenna array receiving system was assembled, and a 1 m2 active antenna array tile was characterized
