    Mapping spaces from projective spaces

We denote the nn-th projective space of a topological monoid GG by BnGB_nG and the classifying space by BGBG. Let GG be a well-pointed topological monoid of the homotopy type of a CW complex and GG' a well-pointed grouplike topological monoid. We prove the weak equivalence between the pointed mapping space Map0(BnG,BG)\mathrm{Map}_0(B_nG,BG) and the space of all AnA_n-maps from GG to GG'. This fact has several applications. As the first application, we show that the connecting map GMap0(BnG,BG)G\rightarrow\mathrm{Map}_0(B_nG,BG) of the evaluation fiber sequence Map0(BnG,BG)Map(BnG,BG)BG\mathrm{Map}_0(B_nG,BG)\rightarrow\mathrm{Map}(B_nG,BG)\rightarrow BG is delooped. As other applications, we consider higher homotopy commutativity, AnA_n-types of gauge groups, TkfT_k^f-spaces by Iwase--Mimura--Oda--Yoon and homotopy pullback of AnA_n-maps. In particular, we show that the TkfT_k^f-space and the CkfC_k^f-space are exactly the same concept and give some new examples of TkfT_k^f-spaces.Comment: 26 pages, 3 figures; the appendix in v3 is deleted since its argument was incomplet

Are commuting and residential mobility decisions simultaneous?: the case of catalonia

In this paper we study the commuting and moving decisions of workers in Catalonia (Spain) and its evolution in the 1986-1996 period. Using a microdata sample from the 1991 Spanish Population Census, we estimate a simultaneous, discrete choice model of commuting and moves, thus indirectly addressing the home and job location decisions. The econometrical framework is a simultaneous, binary probit model with a commute equation and a move equation.residential location choice, commuting, suburbanization

Taxation and the Demand for Gambling: New Evidence from the United Kingdom.

In October 2001, the U.K. government implemented a dramatic shift in the taxation of gambling, resulting in a substantial decline in taxes levied on U.K. bookmakers. Using data before and after this event, we present econometric evidence on the demand response to this tax reduction. Our results suggest that the demand for bookmaker gambling is highly sensitive to taxation rates and that the decline in the rate of taxation led to a large increase in the demand for on-shore betting. We also find some evidence of price-induced substitution across different segments of the gambling industry. The U.K. policy initiative may provide useful information for policy makers in other countries who are contemplating changes in gambling taxation.

A solution of Braess' approximation problem on powers of the distance function

The polynomial approximation behaviour of the class of functions F_s: R^2\(x_0, y_0 ) -> R, F_s(x,y) = ( (x-x_0)^2 + (y-y_0)^2 )^(-s), s \in (0, \infty), is studied in [Bra01]. There it is claimed that the obtained results can be embedded in a more general setting. This conjecture will be confirmed and complemented by a different approach than in [Bra01]. The key is to connect the approximation rate of F_s with its holomorphic continuability for which the classical Bernstein approximation theorem is linked with the convexity of best approximants. Approximation results of this kind also play a vital role in the numerical treatment of elliptic differential equations [Sau]

Preliminary results of the 2017 season in the Amazonian earthen structures known as geoglyphs.
