    Magnetic permeability of near-critical 3d abelian Higgs model and duality

    The three-dimensional abelian Higgs model has been argued to be dual to a scalar field theory with a global U(1) symmetry. We show that this duality, together with the scaling and universality hypotheses, implies a scaling law for the magnetic permeablity chi_m near the line of second order phase transition: chi_m ~ t^nu, where t is the deviation from the critical line and nu ~ 0.67 is a critical exponent of the O(2) universality class. We also show that exactly on the critical lines, the dependence of magnetic induction on external magnetic field is quadratic, with a proportionality coefficient depending only on the gauge coupling. These predictions provide a way for testing the duality conjecture on the lattice in the Coulomb phase and at the phase transion.Comment: 11 pages; updated references and small changes, published versio

    Dynamical Symmetry Breaking in Planar QED

    We investigate (2+1)-dimensional QED coupled with Dirac fermions both at zero and finite temperature. We discuss in details two-components (P-odd) and four-components (P-even) fermion fields. We focus on P-odd and P-even Dirac fermions in presence of an external constant magnetic field. In the spontaneous generation of the magnetic condensate survives even at infinite temperature.     Field trials and test results of portable DVB-T systems with transmit delay diversity

    This paper describes work carried out by Brunel University and Broadreach Systems (UK) to quantify the advantages that can be achieved if Transmit Diversity is applied to systems employing the DVB standard. The techniques investigated can be applied to standard receiver equipment without modification. An extensive and carefully planned field trial was performed during the winter of 2007/2008 in Uxbridge (UK) to validate predictions from theoretical modeling and laboratory simulations. The transmissions were performed in the 730 MHz frequency band with a DVB-T transmitter and a mean power of 18.4dBW. Transmit delay diversity has been observed to deliver significant reception improvement in automotive and indoor- non line of sight situations

    Vortices Clustering: The Origin of the Second Peak in the Magnetisation Loops of High Temperature Superconductors

    We study vortex clustering in type II Superconductors. We demonstrate that the ``second peak'' observed in magnetisation loops may be a dynamical effect associated with a density driven instability of the vortex system. At the microscopic level the instability shows up as the clustering of individual vortices at (rare) preferential regions of the pinning potential. In the limit of quasi-static ramping the instability is related to a phase transition in the equilibrium vortex system.Comment: 11 pages + 3 figure

    Meteoroid and debris special investigation group data acquisition procedures

    The entire LDEF spacecraft was examined by M&D SIG for impact (i.e., craters greater than or = 0.5 mm and penetrations greater than or = 0.3 mm in diameter) and related features (e.g., debris, secondaries). During the various detailed surveys conducted at NASA Kennedy, approx. 5,000 impact related features were photodocumented, and their locations measured and recorded; an additional approx. 30,000 smaller features were counted. The equipment and techniques used by the M&D SIG permitted the determination and recording of the locations and diameters of the 5,000 imaged features. A variety of experimental and LDEF structural hardware was acquired by the M&D SIG and is presently being examined and curated at NASA Johnson

    Palliative and supportive care in head and neck cancer: United Kingdom National Multidisciplinary Guidelines

    This is the official guideline endorsed by the specialty associations involved in the care of head and neck cancer patients in the UK. It provides recommendations on the assessments and interventions for this group of patients receiving palliative and supportive care. Recommendations • Palliative and supportive care must be multidisciplinary. (G) • All core team members should have training in advanced communication skills. (G) • Palliative surgery should be considered in selected cases. (R) • Hypofractionated or short course radiotherapy should be considered for local pain control and for painful bony metastases. (R) • All palliative patients should have a functional endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES) assessment of swallow to assess for risk of aspiration. (G) • Pain relief should be based on the World Health Organization pain ladder. (R) • Specialist pain management service involvement should be considered early for those with refractory pain. (G) • Constipation should be avoided by the judicious use of prophylactic laxatives and the correction of systemic causes such as dehydration, hypercalcaemia and hypothyroidism. (G) • Organic causes of confusion should be identified and corrected where appropriate, failing this, treatment with benzodiazepines or antipsychotics should be considered. (G) • Patients with symptoms suggestive of spinal metastases or metastatic cord compression must be managed in accordance with the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence guidance. (R) • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation is inappropriate in the palliative dying patient. (R) • 'Do not attempt cardiopulmonary resuscitation' orders should be completed and discussed with the patient and/or the family unless good reasons exist not to do so where appropriate. This is absolutely necessary when a patient's care is to be managed at home. (G)

    Harmonic Superspace, Minimal Unitary Representations and Quasiconformal Groups

    We show that there is a remarkable connection between the harmonic superspace (HSS) formulation of N=2, d=4 supersymmetric quaternionic Kaehler sigma models that couple to N=2 supergravity and the minimal unitary representations of their isometry groups. In particular, for N=2 sigma models with quaternionic symmetric target spaces of the form G/HXSU(2) we establish a one-to-one mapping between the Killing potentials that generate the isometry group G under Poisson brackets in the HSS formulation and the generators of the minimal unitary representation of G obtained by quantization of its geometric realization as a quasiconformal group. Quasiconformal extensions of U-duality groups of four dimensional N=2, d=4 Maxwell-Einstein supergravity theories (MESGT) had been proposed as spectrum generating symmetry groups earlier. We discuss some of the implications of our results, in particular, for the BPS black hole spectra of 4d, N=2 MESGTs.Comment: 20 pages; Latex file: references added; minor cosmetic change

    Octet baryon electromagnetic form factors in nuclear medium

    We study the octet baryon electromagnetic form factors in nuclear matter using the covariant spectator quark model extended to the nuclear matter regime. The parameters of the model in vacuum are fixed by the study of the octet baryon electromagnetic form factors. In nuclear matter the changes in hadron properties are calculated by including the relevant hadron masses and the modification of the pion-baryon coupling constants calculated in the quark-meson coupling model. In nuclear matter the magnetic form factors of the octet baryons are enhanced in the low Q2Q^2 region, while the electric form factors show a more rapid variation with Q2Q^2. The results are compared with the modification of the bound proton electromagnetic form factors observed at Jefferson Lab.
