Characterization of mesostasis regions in lunar basalts: Understanding late-stage melt evolution and its influence on apatite formation
Recent studies geared toward understanding the volatile abundances of the lunar interior have focused on the volatile-bearing accessory mineral apatite. Translating measurements of volatile abundances in lunar apatite into the volatile inventory of the silicate melts from which they crystallized, and ultimately of the mantle source regions of lunar magmas, however, has proved more difficult than initially thought. In this contribution, we report a detailed characterization of mesostasis regions in four Apollo mare basalts (10044, 12064, 15058, and 70035) in order to ascertain the compositions of the melts from which apatite crystallized. The texture, modal mineralogy, and reconstructed bulk composition of these mesostasis regions vary greatly within and between samples. There is no clear relationship between bulk-rock basaltic composition and that of bulk-mesostasis regions, indicating that bulk-rock composition may have little influence on mesostasis compositions. The development of individual melt pockets, combined with the occurrence of silicate liquid immiscibility, exerts greater control on the composition and texture of mesostasis regions. In general, the reconstructed late-stage lunar melts have roughly andesitic to dacitic compositions with low alkali contents, displaying much higher SiO2 abundances than the bulk compositions of their host magmatic rocks. Relevant partition coefficients for apatite-melt volatile partitioning under lunar conditions should, therefore, be derived from experiments conducted using intermediate compositions instead of compositions representing mare basalts
Corporate Social Responsibility in Family Business: a literature review
This paper aims to analyse the state of the art of research in the field of Corporate Social
Responsibility (CSR) in family business, in order to find potential research gaps and to identify
future research directions.
We carried out a literature, using most common sources. 80 articles, issued in different journals,
from a wide range of fields, were found. The majority of articles are empirical; we didn’t find any
literature review on CSR in family business. Research findings show that CSR in family business is
a topic that has been analysed since 2003, but the literature is very limited and fragmented. Some
authors underline that family business are more socially responsible than nonfamily firms, others
suggest that there are not differences between family and nonfamily businesses. Family firms have
special links with local community and they have a particular focus on social and environmental
issues. Moreover, they have strong ties with their stakeholders, nevertheless some authors underline
that family ownership has a negative correlation with employees and the community in relation to
CSR performance.
In the light of findings of the literature review, we propose that future research should analyse more
in depth how the distinctive features of family firms may have an impact on the adoption of CSR
practices, as well differences in the CSR approach within different kinds of family businesses
Quali strategie per il futuro dei distretti culturali in Italia?
Abstract What strategies for the future of Italian Cultural Districts? The paper deals with the strategies on cultural districts in Italy, as it emerged on theory and practice in the recent years. Cultural Districts are places of continuous change and transformation. Different cultural stakeholders find new ways to define development process and new rules of decision making. The use of new tools for planning the changing of the cultural policies implies a different role of banking foundations in the decisional process. The management plan is one of these tools for conservation and valorisation the cultural heritage
Heart Transplantation Following Fontan Failure: Long-Term Survival Analysis
Objectives: Fontan circulation presents significant challenges for patients with congenital heart disease, often necessitating heart transplantation (HTX) due to deteriorating functionality across multiple organ systems. However, the impact of prior Fontan palliation on HTX outcomes remains poorly understood, with early mortality rates suggesting a heightened risk. The aim of our study is to evaluate the long-term results after heart transplantation in patients with univentricular congenital heart disease previously palliated with Fontan circulation. Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on patients who underwent HTX for congenital heart disease. Patients were categorized into two groups based on the pre-HTX circulation pathway: the Failing Fontan Group (FFG) and the Biventricular Congenital Group (BCG). Data were collected from patients between 1987 and 2018. Early and late outcomes, including survival rates, were assessed and critically analyzed. Results: Of the 66 patients, 29 (43%) had a failing Fontan palliation (FFG), and 37 had biventricular congenital diseases (BCG) before heart transplantation. Early mortality (30-day) was not statistically different between the two group. The overall survival rate was 82.6 +/- 13.9% at 1 year, 79.0 +/- 14.9% at 5 years, 67.2 +/- 17.6% at 10 years and 63.2 +/- 18.2 +/- at 15 years for the FFG, and 86.1 +/- 11.4% at 1 year, 79.5 +/- 13.7% at 5 years, 75.7 +/- 14.9% at 10 years, 75.7 +/- 14.9% at 15 years for the BCG, with no statistically significant difference (Mantel Cox p value: 0.69, 0.89, 0.52 and 0.39, respectively). Regarding Cox-regression analysis, the long-term survival rate was not affected either by previous Fontan surgery or by the era of heart transplantation (before vs. after the year 2000). Conclusions: Although heart transplantation after Fontan palliation showed a higher risk in the early post-operative period, the medium- and long-term survival rates are comparable with biventricular circulation patients. Despite the failing Fontan patients being a challenging set of candidates for transplantation, it is a reasonable option in their treatment
Dating Granites Using CODEX, with Application to In Situ Dating on the Moon
We have measured 87Rb–87Sr isochron ages for two granites, using the breadboard version of our Chemistry, Organics, and Dating EXperiment (CODEX), a laser-ablation resonance-ionization mass spectrometer designed for in situ geochronology on the Moon or Mars. These measurements extend the demonstrated analytical capabilities of CODEX, and indicate the value of incorporating a flight-ready version of CODEX, now under construction, into a future mission payload. We used CODEX to obtain accurate ages for the 1700 Ma Boulder Creek Granite, with 1σ statistical precision of 110 Myr, and for the 1100 Ma Pikes Peak Granite, with 1σ statistical precision of 160 Myr. To provide an end-to-end illustration of how CODEX analysis of granites can address critical lunar science questions regarding rock age and composition in situ, we describe an example mission to the lunar Gruithuisen Domes. Gruithuisen Domes appear to be volcanic edifices of granitic composition. Orbital remote sensing suggests that granitic rocks represent only a small fraction of the lunar surface, and the mere fact of their existence on the Moon is a puzzle. CODEX determination of the timing and process of their formation, both presently ill-understood, would provide important constraints on the thermal and geochemical evolution of the lunar interior
Taking care of people experiencing homelessness: a community case study on the practice of the Volunteer Association “A doctor for you” in Brescia, Italy
IntroductionAlthough homelessness is a much-studied phenomenon today, statistics indicate a steady increase in homelessness globally. UN General Assembly itself recommends implementing strategies through the commitment of the various stakeholders involved, among which health services are at the forefront. This current community case study details a specific research-practice partnership strategy—led in Brescia (Italy) in 2023 by the Association of volunteer doctors “Un Medico x Te” (A doctor for you) and the Research Center on Family and Childhood Education (CESPEFI) of the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore—as an attempt to deepen the evaluation of peoples experiencing homelessness' health conditions in Brescia urban area and to promote best practices in granting population experiencing homelessness sustainable health-care approaches.MethodIn phase 1, since chronic liver diseases are very common in people experiencing homelessness, to investigate the presence of these pathologies, the Association “Un Medico x Te” carried out a preliminary observational retrospective echocardiographic cohort study in the population experiencing homelessness hosted in Brescia's housing services. In phase 2, CESPEFI led a research project to investigate the way health and healthcare is conceived by the homeless population living in Brescia urban area, according to the ethnographic methodological framework. Qualitative data were coded to explore emerging themes concerning the best practices to approach the population experiencing homelessness and to grant them appropriate care. At the end of the process internal guidelines were drawn up, based on greater attention to the relationship between doctors and patients experiencing homelessness and to the sustainability of the care-process.ResultsChronic hepatic diseases were more common and severe in people experiencing homelessness than general population and it was related to the duration of the homeless condition. Taking care of the particular aspects of the relationships between doctors and patients experiencing homelessness made clinical research and health care more effective.DiscussionThis study demonstrates that a multi-disciplinary approach is strategic in order to respond to such a complex phenomenon as homelessness is; not-adopting a multidisciplinary approach may itself represent an additional mechanism of exclusion. Further studies are needed to explore innovative strategies to better face the problem of how: 1) to approach patients experiencing homelessness and 2) to implement appropriate medical assistance
Coronary artery bypass surgery in a patient with Kartagener syndrome: a case report and literature review
Kartagener syndrome consists of congenital bronchiectasis, sinusitis, and total situs inversus in half of the patients. A patient diagnosed with Kartagener syndrome was reffered to our department due to 3-vessel coronary disease. An off-pump coronary artery bypass operation was performed using both internal thoracic arteries and a saphenous vein graft. We performed a literature review for cases with Kartagener syndrome, coronary surgery and dextrocardia. Although a few cases of dextrocardia were found in the literature, no case of Kartagener syndrome was mentioned
