Improving Measurement of Multidimensional Child Poverty in Vietnam

This study analyses multidimensional child poverty in Vietnam, using a child-specific measure of poverty that captures the dimensions of wellbeing that are most relevant to children. Vietnam has experienced a rapid and robust decrease in multidimensional child poverty in recent years. All the indicators of multidimensional child poverty decreased over the period 2010-2014, except for a slight increase in calorie consumption. Multi-dimensional child poverty in Viet Nam sharply decreased in the period 2010-2014, with the proportion of children deprived in more than one fifth of the dimensions falling more than 10 percentage points. Although multi-dimensional child poverty has declined in different groups of children, the poverty gap among some groups of children remains high. For instance, the multidimensional poverty rate of ethnic minority children was 52.3%, while the Kinh majority was 12.3% (at the cut-off level of one fifth) by 2014

Revealed Preferences with Plural Motives: Axiomatic Foundations of Normative Assessments in Non-Utilitarian Welfare Economics

This paper explores the possibility of defining a non-utilitarian normative standard for assessments of welfare and deprivation. The paper formalises a key aspect of Amartya Sen’s critique of the assumption of consistent utility-maximisation in the revealed preference theory and proposes a generalisation of the standard Samuelsonian choice model for the case in which choices are based on plural motives (here, self-interested and moral motives). Based on a set of intuitive assumptions about the way in which unobservable motives are linked to observable choices, we then construct an alternative normative ranking rule that can be used in non-utilitarian welfare economics to rank social outcomes or provide a normative basis for the construction of composite indices, for instance

Multi-messenger searches via IceCube’s high-energy neutrinos and gravitational-wave detections of LIGO/Virgo

We summarize initial results for high-energy neutrino counterpart searches coinciding with gravitational-wave events in LIGO/Virgo\u27s GWTC-2 catalog using IceCube\u27s neutrino triggers. We did not find any statistically significant high-energy neutrino counterpart and derived upper limits on the time-integrated neutrino emission on Earth as well as the isotropic equivalent energy emitted in high-energy neutrinos for each event

Measuring the Neutrino Cross Section Using 8 years of Upgoing Muon Neutrinos Observed with IceCube

The IceCube Neutrino Observatory detects neutrinos at energies orders of magnitude higher than those available to current accelerators. Above 40 TeV, neutrinos traveling through the Earth will be absorbed as they interact via charged current interactions with nuclei, creating a deficit of Earth-crossing neutrinos detected at IceCube. The previous published results showed the cross section to be consistent with Standard Model predictions for 1 year of IceCube data. We present a new analysis that uses 8 years of IceCube data to fit the ν$_{μ}$ absorption in the Earth, with statistics an order of magnitude better than previous analyses, and with an improved treatment of systematic uncertainties. It will measure the cross section in three energy bins that span the range 1 TeV to 100 PeV. We will present Monte Carlo studies that demonstrate its sensitivity
