    Primer reporte de la colección de moluscos presentes en el Museo Maggiorino Borgatello (Punta Arenas, Chile)

    The Chilean mollusc collection of the Maggiorino Borgatello Salesian Museum (Punta Arenas, Chile) was created around the year 1905 aiming to preserve mollusc local knowledge. Since then until mid-twentieth century many specimens had been incorporated into the collection, which were identified by local curators, but never underwent a comprehensive inventory and taxonomic identification. This report provides comprehensive information on the taxonomy and distribution of mollusc species currently present in the museum. We recorded 37 species of molluscs (26 gastropods and 11 bivalves), of which 19 are commercially important species. From the biogeographical standpoint, the collection represents about 4% of the registered molluscs for the Chilean territory and about 10% of that reported for the Magellan Region. At the species level, we highlight the presence of specimens of Photinula roseolineata, Calliostoma irisans and Buccinanops paytensis, which have very few records in the Magellanic Biogeographic Province. The maintenance and preservation of this mollusc collection has great local and regional relevance as a way of preserving cultural heritage of this southern part of the world.La colección de moluscos chilenos del Museo Salesiano Maggiorino Borgatello (Punta Arenas, Chile) fue creada alrededor del año 1905 con el objetivo de rescatar el conocimiento local de la malacofauna. Desde esa fecha hasta mediados del siglo XX se habían ingresado numerosos especimenes, los cuales fueron identificados por curadores locales, pero que nunca fueron sometidos a un inventario exhaustivo ni identificación taxonómica. Este trabajo entrega información sobre las especies de moluscos que actualmente están presentes en el museo. Se registraron un total 37 especies de moluscos (26 gasterópodos y 11 bivalvos), de las cuales 19 corresponden a especies de interés comercial. Desde el punto de vista biogeográfico, la colección representa alrededor del 4% de la malacofauna registrada para el territorio chileno y alrededor del 10% de la registrada para la Región Magallánica. A nivel de especies, se destaca la presencia de ejemplares de Photinula roseolineata, Calliostoma irisans y Buccinanops paytensis, los cuales presentan muy pocos registros en la provincia Biogeográfica Magallánica. El mantenimiento y conservación de esta colección de moluscos reviste importancia a nivel cultural y científico, como una forma de preservación del patrimonio de esta zona austral del mundo

    Mate Marote is a flexible framework for large-scale educational interventions that include games developed, based on aspects from cognitive sciences as an effective way of learning. MemoMarote is a computer game designed for training working memory. The pilot study of this platform was an intervention in La Rioja province (Argentina). In this article we analyze the registered statistics of use of the unsupervised version of the game. We found that playing activity had a peak when recently installed, decreasing during the first year and observing an increase when starting school classes in 2013. Analyzing the usage statistics we observed that players have a poor performance, with more incorrect answers than correct ones. These results suggest that children did not read instructions or they were not understood, and so they played the game incorrectly.     Distribution of the genus Boeckella (Crustacea, Copepoda, Calanoida, Centropagidae)at high latitudes in South America and the main Antarctic biogeographic regions

    Copepods are present in numerous aquatic environments, playing key roles in food webs, and are thought to be useful indicators of environmental change. Boeckella is a calanoid copepod genus distributed mainly in the Southern Hemisphere, with 14 species reported at higher southern latitudes in South America and Antarctica. We present an updated database of these 14 species of Boeckella generated from a combination of three sources: 1) new field sampling data, 2) published records, and 3) Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF), to provide a comprehensive description of the geographic distribution of the genus south of latitude 40°S in southern South America and the three main terrestrial biogeographic regions of Antarctica. The database includes 380 records, 62 from field sampling, 278 from the literature and 40 from GBIF. Southern South America, including the Falkland/Malvinas Islands, had the highest species richness and number of records (14 and 297, respectively), followed by the sub-Antarctic islands (5 and 34), South Orkney Islands (2 and 14), South Shetland Islands (1 and 23), Antarctic Peninsula (1 and 10) and finally continental Antarctica (1 and 2). Boeckella poppei Mrázek, 1901 is the only representative of the genus, and more widely the only terrestrial/freshwater invertebrate, currently reported from all three main biogeographic regions in Antarctica (sub-Antarctic islands, maritime and continental Antarctic). Future development of molecular systematic studies in this group should contribute to assessing the correspondence between morphological taxonomy and molecular evolutionary radiation

    Temperament Predicts Processing Speed in Low Socioeconomic Status Rural Preschoolers

    Extreme poverty all over the world is concentrated in rural settings. However, studies about cognition in low socioeconomic status (SES) children are for the most part conducted in urban populations. This paper investigates, in a poor rural sample, what are the individual and socioenvironmental variables that make the difference in performance in a processing speed task. Forty four 5-year-old children were evaluated with a processing speed task; individual and socioenvironmental information was obtained from parents’ interviews. Higher scores in the effortful control dimension of temperament were associated with higher performance in the processing speed task. No other individual or socioenvironmental variable predicted the performance. These results showed that effortful control is important in processing speed and suggest that in low SES rural contexts, low effortful control children would require stronger interventions.Fil: Hermida, Maria Julia.     Individuality and self-regulation in preschoolers

    "Different ways of solving planning and spatial working memory tasks generate different taskperformance profiles. Tests were administered to 346 (planning) and 427 (spatial working memory) Argentinean children from different socioeconomic (SES) backgrounds. A cross-sectional design was performed to explore eventual variable profiles of performance that were associated with levels of success or failure on tasks that tapped working memory and planning demands and to evaluate their association with SES backgrounds. The results showed that (1) different task-performance profiles were identified: decreased, changeless, oscillated, or increased; (2) the total score for the tasks was significantly different among these profiles; and (3) there were significant differences in the total score among SES groups, which depended on type of profile. These findings suggested the importance of studying individual differences in the performance of tasks that demand self-regulatory processes of children with SES disadvantages. This is important for the understanding of how children solve problems, and how that behavior varies according to SES." Argentinische Kinder mit unterschiedlichem sozioökonomischen Status (SES) haben Planungsaufgaben (n=346) und Aufgaben zum visuellen Arbeitsgedächtnis (n=427) gelöst. In einem Querschnittsdesign wurden Lösungsprofile identifiziert und in Verbindung mit dem SES gebracht. Die Ergebnisse zeigten: (1) es gibt unterschiedliche Lösungsprofile: abnehmend, gleichbleibend, oszillierend und zunehmend; (2) die Gesamtpunktzahl für die Aufgaben unterschied sich signifikant zwischen den Lösungsprofilen; (3) die Leistung unterschied sich zwischen den SES-Gruppen in Abhängigkeit der Lösungsprofile. Diese Ergebnisse unterstreichen die Wichtigkeit der Betrachtung individueller Unterschiede in der Bearbeitung von Aufgaben, die Selbstregulation erfassen.     Far transfer to language and math of a short software-based gaming intervention

    Executive functions (EF) in children can be trained, but it remains unknown whether training-related benefits elicit far transfer to real-life situations. Here, we investigate whether a set of computerized games might yield near and far transfer on an experimental and an active control group of low-SES otherwise typically developing 6-y-olds in a 3-mo pretest–training–posttest design that was ecologically deployed (at school). The intervention elicits transfer to some (but not all) facets of executive function. These changes cascade to real-world measures of school performance.     Laevilacunaria (Mollusca, Gastropoda) in the Southern Ocean: A comprehensive occurrence dataset

    The present dataset is a compilation of georeferenced occurrences of the littorinid genus Laevilacunaria Powell, 1951 (Mollusca, Gastropoda) in the Southern Ocean. Occurrence data were obtained from field expeditions (Antarctic and sub-Antarctic sampling) between 2015 and 2022, together with a review of published literature including records from 1887 to 2022. Three Laevilacunaria species have been recorded from the Southern Ocean: Laevilacunaria bennetti, L. antarctica and L. pumilio.The present dataset includes 75 occurrences, representing the most exhaustive database of this Antarctic and sub-Antarctic littorinid genus.     Complete distribution of the genus Laevilitorina (Littorinimorpha: Littorinidae) in the Southern Hemisphere: remarks and natural history

    Littorinid snails are present in most coastal areas globally, playing a significant role in the ecology of intertidal communities. Laevilitorina is a marine gastropod genus distributed exclusively in the Southern Hemisphere, with 21 species reported from South America, the sub-Antarctic islands, Antarctica, New Zealand, Australia and Tasmania. Here, an updated database of 21 species generated from a combination of sources is presented: 1) new field sampling data; 2) published records; 3) the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) and The Atlas of Living Australia (ALA), to provide a comprehensive description of the known geographic distribution of the genus and detailed occurrences for each of the 21 species. The database includes 813 records (occurrences), 53 from field sampling, 174 from the literature, 128 from GBIF, and 458 from ALA. West Antarctica had the highest species richness (8 species), followed by sub-Antarctic islands of New Zealand (4 species) and the south-east shelf of Australia (4 species). The provinces of Magellan, New Zealand South Island, and sub-Antarctic Islands of the Indian Ocean include two species each. This study specifically highlights reports of L. pygmaea and L. venusta, species that have been almost unrecorded since their description. Recent advances in molecular studies of L. caliginosa showed that this species does not correspond to a widely distributed taxon, but to multiple divergent lineages distributed throughout the Southern Ocean. Ongoing molecular and taxonomic studies are necessary for a better understanding of the diversity and biogeography of this genus
