The importance of the geographical information is incontestable for efficient decision making in urban environment. But, it is not always available. The very high spatial resolution (VHSR) satellite images constitute an interesting source of this information. However, the extraction of the geographical information from these images is until now problematic. The goal of the present study is to develop a new object-based approach for automatic extraction of geographical information in urban environment from very high spatial resolution images. The proposed approach is object-based image analysis. There are two principal steps: passage of pixels to object primitives and passage of primitives to final objects. The first stage uses a new multispectrale cooperative segmentation approach. Cooperation between region and edge information is exploited. Segments are created with respect to their spectral homogeneity. The threshold is adaptive and its determination is automatic. The second passage leaves from object primitives created by segmentation. Fuzzy rule base is generated from the human knowledge used for image interpretation. Several kinds of object proprieties are integrated (spectral, textural, geometric, and contextual). The concerned classes are trees, grass, bare soil and water as natural classes and building, road, parking lot as man made classes. Fuzzy logic and possibilities theories are integrated in the process of extraction. They permitted to manage the complexity of the studied objects, to reason with imprecise knowledge and to inform on precision and certainty of the extracted objects. The approach has been applied with success on various subsets of Ikonos and Quickbird images. The global extraction accuracy was about 80%.The object-based approach was able to extract buildings, roads and parking lots in urban areas with of 81%, 75% and 60% extraction accuracies respectively. The results are interesting with regard to that the same rule base was used. The original aspect resides in the fact that the approach is completely automatic and no auxiliary data or training areas are required. Along the different stages of the approach, the parameters and the thresholds are determined automatically. This allows the transposability of the approach on others VHRS images. The present approach constitutes an interesting solution for automatic extraction of the geographical information from VHSR satellite images
Use of Geographic Information Systems for spatio-temporal analysis of the effects of climate change on the availability of fisheries resources (Sardina pilchardus, Merluccius merluccius and Thunnus thynnus) in Morocco

In this study, we examinated the exposure level of distribution of three fish species, Sardina pilchardus, Merluccius merluccius and Thunnus thynnus. The study was carried out along Moroccan coasts in four main fishing areas. The exposure level to climate variables change was analysed based on variation of occurrence probabilties from reference period (2000-2014) and projected period (2040-2050). Two greenhouse gas emission scenarios were considered (RCP6.0 and RCP8.5). AquaMaps model was used to generate predicted distributions from three environmental factors, sea surface temperature, salinity and depth. The results demonstrate that temperature and salinity will increase during next 30 years in three areas (Mediterranean area, centre atlantic area and south atlantic area) under RCP6.0 and RCP8.5. Thus, distributions of Sardina pilchardus and Merluccius merluccius will decrease while the distribution of Thunnus thynnus will remain stable.

Urban Objects Extraction from 3D Laser Point Clouds Acquired by a Static Laser Scanner and a Mobile Mapping System
Abstract Terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) whether in static scanning or mobile scanning, as in the case of a mobile mapping system (MMS), generates a large amount of 3D data. These data can be used for a variety of purposes. The aim of this research study is to experiment terrestrial laser scanning, in both static and mobile mode, for the extraction of urban objects of an urban street survey. Particularly, this research aims to develop a comparative study, of the two methods, according to the conventional method (tachometry measurement). We have established a methodology in order to extract objects form 3D data collected by a static laser scanner and a mobile mapping system. The proposed methodology has been tested on two urban street sections of 300 meters length. Finally, we fixed a comparative analysis between the two laser scanning methods, within the following comparison levels: qualitative level (precision and completeness criteria), time level (operative time for acquisition and processing) and financial level (direct costs). The results show the efficiency of the mobile mapping approach especially for data acquisition. To establish an urban survey, the direct cost is 71% cheaper using a mobile mapping system and 50% cheaper using a static laser scanner, than using the conventional method
Extending the IFC Standard to Enable Road Operation and Maintenance Management through OpenBIM
Open Building Information Modelling (OpenBIM) is a collaborative project management process. Its application to road infrastructures is currently limited. OpenBIM standards for infrastructure are still under development. One of these standards is the Industry Foundation Classes (IFC), which is a data architecture for modelling infrastructure projects. The current and upcoming releases of IFCRoad focus on structuring data for the design and construction phases of an infrastructure’s lifecycle. Semantics of the O&M process phase are not fully integrated within these standards. This paper proposes an extension of the IFC schema to enrich this standard with semantics inherent in the O&M phase of road infrastructures. This extension, based on IFCInfra4OM ontology, allows the OpenBIM process to be fully applied to road infrastructures. Its implementation on a case study relative to the A7 Agadir–Marrakech Highway in Morocco enables, on the one hand, analysis and compliance with O&M management requirements on the basis of a single container: the IFC-BIM-based model. On the other hand, it allows comparison of the OpenBIM process with that of ClosedBIM for the integration of O&M data into BIM for a road infrastructure
Opportunities for the use of drone technology in forest ecosystems

UAVs have rapidly proven their efficiency in natural resources, the environment, agriculture and forestry. As a remote sensing platform, UAVs have the potential to increase the efficiency of forest data acquisition, having much higher spatial and temporal resolutions than other remote sensing techniques. In this paper, we present a synthesis of research on the use of UAV technology in various forestry applications, such as forest canopy modelling, forest inventory parameter assessment, forest health monitoring and forest species discrimination. The analysis of this research has shown that the use of UAV technology has concerned several diversified aspects, while other research themes are less studied, notably the assessment of natural regeneration, the monitoring of natural ecosystem rehabilitation projects, the study of climate and anthropogenic change impacts forest ecosystems. UAV technology is an opportunities for management of the Moroccan forest ecosystem, in order to overcome the limitations of the remote sensing techniques currently used, in terms of spatial resolution, flexibility in the choice of data acquisition time and in terms of cost.

Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a technology revolution in the building industry where it has proven itself throughout the life cycle of a building. This reality has led in recent years to an extension of this concept to the Civil Engineering sector for infrastructure projects by deploying scientific research within universities or organized in international groups. The common goal is to facilitate the exchange of data and collaboration around these projects. In this context, our research focuses specifically on road projects and aims to propose a conceptual model for structuring a 3D BIM for this type of infrastructure. This conceptual model is based on the standards applicable in Morocco in addition to recommendations of BuildingSmart in terms of IFC standard. This article provides an exhaustive literature review on the recent advances on integrating BIM in the infrastructure sector. Then, a case study in Morocco is discussed to highlight the requirements and technical constraints that should be taken into consideration for the implementation of 3D BIM in roads infrastructure projects.

IFCInfra4OM: An Ontology to Integrate Operation and Maintenance Information in Highway Information Modelling
Building information modelling (BIM) is increasingly appropriate for infrastructure projects, and in particular for transport infrastructure. It is a digital solution that integrates the practices of the construction industry in facility management during the whole life cycle. This integration is possible through a single tool, which is the 3D digital model. Nevertheless, BIM standards, such as industry foundation classes, are still in the pipeline for infrastructure management. These standards do not fully meet the requirements of operation and maintenance of transport infrastructure. This paper shows how BIM could be implemented to address issues related to the operation and maintenance phase for transport infrastructure management. For this purpose, a new ontological approach, called Industry Foundation Classes for Operation and Maintenance of Infrastructures (IFCInfra4OM), is detailed. This ontology aims to standardise the use of building information modelling for operation and maintenance in road infrastructures. To highlight the interest of the proposed ontological approach, a building information model of a section on the A7 Agadir–Marrakech Highway in Morocco is produced according to IFCInfra4OM. The methodology is presented. The results obtained, including the IFCInfra4OM data model, are submitted. In the last section, an overview of the IFC extension approach is submitted
Morocco has made enormous efforts in the irrigation field. However the lack of information regarding the precise location and delimita-tion of the irrigated areas is increasingly affecting farmers’ monitoring and control. The main objective of this study is to evaluate the contribution of the object-based image analysis approach for automatic extraction of irrigated areas, especially those out of the officials irrigated perimeters. We worked on two Landsat 8 images of the Gharb region. Three methods of classification have been carried out and evaluated according to the object-based approach. For the first two methods, we have created and implemented a series of membership rules, that aim, through various attributes (NDVI and temperature), to discriminate the objects of interest. For the third method, we used the nearest neighbor interpolation to establish a land cover map of the area of study. The results of this study are very promising. The irrigated areas were successfully extracted at 88.5 %. The superposition of the extracted areas with the boundary of the official irrigated perimeter made it possible to detect and locate irrigated areas outside this perimeter in the Gharb region. This will contribute to a better monitoring and control of the irrigation methods and the water consumption of the farmers in this region.

Morocco is a water-scarce country confronted with a severe dependence on rain-fed agriculture and dwindling groundwater reserves. Since 1995, new water regulation laws and management strategies have been promulgated providing a comprehensive framework for an integrated management. Moreover, water managers should have precise data on the current state of water tables depth in strategic aquifers. Unfortunately, the main source of these data are sporadic wells with no automated monitoring systems making the assessment of water table dynamics, costly, time consuming and out-phased with decision maker needs. In this respect, this paper focuses on the capability of Ground Penetrating Radar to determine the depth of shallow water table in Mnasra region, located in the Gharb region of Morocco as a pilot study to generalize its use in the future for groundwater dynamic monitoring purposes in Morocco. The experiment was undertaken using Mala 800 MHz shielded antennas and was able to probe the depth of the upper fresh water table at 3.75 m deep in the Mnasra aquifer in semi-arid conditions. Data collected by GPR can be used as substitute for well logs to enhance the monitoring of water tables in stressed areas during droughts and excessive recharges during rainy season.
