Comparison of work fluctuation relations
We compare two predictions regarding the microscopic fluctuations of a system
that is driven away from equilibrium: one due to Crooks [J. Stat. Phys. 90,
1481 (1998)] which has gained recent attention in the context of nonequilibrium
work and fluctuation theorems, and an earlier, analogous result obtained by
Bochkov and Kuzovlev [Zh. Eksp. Teor. Fiz. 72(1), 238247 (1977)]. Both results
quantify irreversible behavior by comparing probabilities of observing
particular microscopic trajectories during thermodynamic processes related by
time-reversal, and both are expressed in terms of the work performed when
driving the system away from equilibrium. By deriving these two predictions
within a single, Hamiltonian framework, we clarify the precise relationship
between them, and discuss how the different definitions of work used by the two
sets of authors gives rise to different physical interpretations. We then
obtain a extended fluctuation relation that contains both the Crooks and the
Bochkov-Kuzovlev results as special cases.Comment: 14 pages with 1 figure, accepted for publication in the Journal of

On the Fluctuation Relation for Nose-Hoover Boundary Thermostated Systems
We discuss the transient and steady state fluctuation relation for a
mechanical system in contact with two deterministic thermostats at different
temperatures. The system is a modified Lorentz gas in which the fixed
scatterers exchange energy with the gas of particles, and the thermostats are
modelled by two Nos\'e-Hoover thermostats applied at the boundaries of the
system. The transient fluctuation relation, which holds only for a precise
choice of the initial ensemble, is verified at all times, as expected. Times
longer than the mesoscopic scale, needed for local equilibrium to be settled,
are required if a different initial ensemble is considered. This shows how the
transient fluctuation relation asymptotically leads to the steady state
relation when, as explicitly checked in our systems, the condition found in
[D.J. Searles, {\em et al.}, J. Stat. Phys. 128, 1337 (2007)], for the validity
of the steady state fluctuation relation, is verified. For the steady state
fluctuations of the phase space contraction rate \zL and of the dissipation
function \zW, a similar relaxation regime at shorter averaging times is
found. The quantity \zW satisfies with good accuracy the fluctuation relation
for times larger than the mesoscopic time scale; the quantity \zL appears to
begin a monotonic convergence after such times. This is consistent with the
fact that \zW and \zL differ by a total time derivative, and that the tails
of the probability distribution function of \zL are Gaussian.Comment: Major revision. Fig.10 was added. Version to appear in Journal of

Deep-water macroalgae from the Canary Islands: new records and biogeographical relationships
Due to the geographical location and paleobiogeography of the Canary Islands, the
seaweed flora contains macroalgae with different distributional patterns. In this contribution, the biogeographical relations of several new records of deep-water macroalgae recently collected around the Canarian archipelago are discussed. These are Bryopsidella neglecta (Berthotd) Rietema,Discosporangium mesarthrocarpum (Meneghini) Hauck, Hincksia onslowensis (Amsler et Kapraun)P.C. Silva, Syringoderma floridana Henry, Peyssonnelia harveyana J. Agardh, Cryptonemia seminervis(C. Agardh) J. Agardh, Botryodadia wynnei Ballantine, Gloiocladia blomquistii (Searles) R. E.Norris, PIahchrysis peltata (W. R. Taylor) P. Huv4 et H. Huv4, Leptofauchea brasiliensis Joly, and Sarcodiotheca divaricata W. R. Taylor. These new records, especially those in the Florideophyceae, support the strong affinity of the Canary Islands seaweed flora with the warm-temperate Mediterranean-Atlantic region. Some species are recorded for the first time from the east coast of the Atlantic Ocean, enhancing the biogeographic relations of the Canarian marine flora with that of the western Atlantic regions
THE GENUS HYPOGLOSSUM KÜTZING (DELESSERIACEAE, RHODOPHYTA) IN THE TROPICAL WESTERN ATLANTIC, INCLUDING H. ANOMALUM SP. NOV. 1
Observations are made on the occurrence and distribution of the red algal genus Hypoglossum KÜtzing (Delesseriaceae, Ceramiales) in the tropical western Atlantic. In addition to the type of the genus, H. hypoglossoides (Stackh.) Coll. & Herv., three other species are reported: H. anomalum sp. nov., H. involvens (Harv.) J. Ag., and H. tenuifolium (Harv.) J. Ag. A key is presented to distinguish these four species. The newly described species, H. anomalum, is like other species in the genus in that its branches arise endogenously from the primary axial row but it is unique in that the branches emerge from the parent blade at some point between the midline and the margin of the blade. The new species is reported from Puerto Rico and Florida.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/65648/1/j.1529-8817.1986.tb04162.x.pd
Fluctuation Relations for Diffusion Processes
The paper presents a unified approach to different fluctuation relations for
classical nonequilibrium dynamics described by diffusion processes. Such
relations compare the statistics of fluctuations of the entropy production or
work in the original process to the similar statistics in the time-reversed
process. The origin of a variety of fluctuation relations is traced to the use
of different time reversals. It is also shown how the application of the
presented approach to the tangent process describing the joint evolution of
infinitesimally close trajectories of the original process leads to a
multiplicative extension of the fluctuation relations.Comment: 38 page
Master equation approach to the conjugate pairing rule of Lyapunov spectra for many-particle thermostatted systems
The master equation approach to Lyapunov spectra for many-particle systems is
applied to non-equilibrium thermostatted systems to discuss the conjugate
pairing rule. We consider iso-kinetic thermostatted systems with a shear flow
sustained by an external restriction, in which particle interactions are
expressed as a Gaussian white randomness. Positive Lyapunov exponents are
calculated by using the Fokker-Planck equation to describe the tangent vector
dynamics. We introduce another Fokker-Planck equation to describe the
time-reversed tangent vector dynamics, which allows us to calculate the
negative Lyapunov exponents. Using the Lyapunov exponents provided by these two
Fokker-Planck equations we show the conjugate pairing rule is satisfied for
thermostatted systems with a shear flow in the thermodynamic limit. We also
give an explicit form to connect the Lyapunov exponents with the
time-correlation of the interaction matrix in a thermostatted system with a
color field.Comment: 10 page
An approach to measuring and encouraging research translation and research impact
Background: Research translation, particularly in the biomedical area, is often discussed but there are few methods that are routinely used to measure it or its impact. Of the impact measurement methods that are used, most aim to provide accountability - to measure and explain what was generated as a consequence of funding research. This case study reports on the development of a novel, conceptual framework that goes beyond measurement. The Framework To Assess the Impact from Translational health research, or FAIT, is a platform designed to prospectively measure and encourage research translation and research impact. A key assumption underpinning FAIT is that research translation is a prerequisite for research impact. Methods: The research impact literature was mined to understand the range of existing frameworks and techniques employed to measure and encourage research translation and research impact. This review provided insights for the development of a FAIT prototype. A Steering Committee oversaw the project and provided the feedback that was used to refine FAIT. Results: The outcome of the case study was the conceptual framework, FAIT, which is based on a modified program logic model and a hybrid of three proven methodologies for measuring research impact, namely a modified Payback method, social return on investment, and case studies or narratives of the process by which research translates and generates impact. Conclusion: As funders increasingly seek to understand the return on their research investments, the routine measurement of research translation and research impact is likely to become mandatory rather than optional. Measurement of research impact on its own is insufficient. There should also be a mechanism attached to measurement that encourages research translation and impact - FAIT was designed for this tas
Fluctuations in Nonequilibrium Statistical Mechanics: Models, Mathematical Theory, Physical Mechanisms
The fluctuations in nonequilibrium systems are under intense theoretical and
experimental investigation. Topical ``fluctuation relations'' describe
symmetries of the statistical properties of certain observables, in a variety
of models and phenomena. They have been derived in deterministic and, later, in
stochastic frameworks. Other results first obtained for stochastic processes,
and later considered in deterministic dynamics, describe the temporal evolution
of fluctuations. The field has grown beyond expectation: research works and
different perspectives are proposed at an ever faster pace. Indeed,
understanding fluctuations is important for the emerging theory of
nonequilibrium phenomena, as well as for applications, such as those of
nanotechnological and biophysical interest. However, the links among the
different approaches and the limitations of these approaches are not fully
understood. We focus on these issues, providing: a) analysis of the theoretical
models; b) discussion of the rigorous mathematical results; c) identification
of the physical mechanisms underlying the validity of the theoretical
predictions, for a wide range of phenomena.Comment: 44 pages, 2 figures. To appear in Nonlinearity (2007
