    Evolutionary significance of antiparasite, antipredator and learning phenotypes of avian nest defence

    Avian nest defence, which is expected to serve both antiparasite and antipredator functions, may benefit or be detrimental to birds, although selective forces that potentially operate on nest defence have not been quantified as a whole. Together with fitness values, we analysed two traits of nest defence, intensity and plasticity, in two distantly related passerine species, yellow warbler (Setophaga petechia) in North America and reed warbler (Acrocephalus scirpaceus) in Europe, both favourite host species for brood parasites. Breeders that escaped parasitism were the most vocal among reed warblers, whereas there was no specific defence phenotype that predicted prevention of parasitism in yellow warblers. Breeders that escaped nest predation were, in both species, those with the most distractive response at the first exposure to a nest-threatening event, such as the experimental predation or parasitism simulated at the nest. However, increasing defence intensity benefited yellow warblers but was detrimental to reed warblers, because intense defence responses attracted predators. Adaptiveness of nest defence was revealed by nest defence phenotypes when examined in concert with the seasonal fitness (i.e. measures of reproductive success). Results revealed selective forces favoured yellow warblers with strong defence phenotypes.     Highly conductive Sb-doped layers in strained Si

    The ability to create stable, highly conductive ultrashallow doped regions is a key requirement for future silicon-based devices. It is shown that biaxial tensile strain reduces the sheet resistance of highly doped n-type layers created by Sb or As implantation. The improvement is stronger with Sb, leading to a reversal in the relative doping efficiency of these n-type impurities. For Sb, the primary effect is a strong enhancement of activation as a function of tensile strain. At low processing temperatures, 0.7% strain more than doubles Sb activation, while enabling the formation of stable, ~10-nm-deep junctions. This makes Sb an interesting alternative to As for ultrashallow junctions in strain-engineered complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor device

    To commemorate our founding in 1914, the Board of Editors has selected six influential pieces published by the Law Review over the past 100 years and will republish one piece in each issue. The fourth piece selected by the Board is Our Administrative System of Criminal Justice, an article written by Gerard E. Lynch that is among the most cited works in the Law Review’s history. This article illustrates how the practice of plea bargaining blurs the boundaries between adversarial and inquisitorial criminal justice systems. Judge Lynch now sits on the Second Circuit having eventually succeeded the late Judge Joseph M. McLaughlin, who also is honored in the pages of this book for the permanent mark he left on Fordham Law School and the Law Review. We think it is fitting that the Law Review feature two of the many contributions that judges of the Second Circuit have made to legal education and scholarship in this issue

    Insect taxa named for the Rev. John H. Keen, early naturalist on the Queen Charlotte Islands and at Metlakatla, British Columbia

    The Reverend John Henry Keen (1851–1950) spent nearly 20 years serving Anglican missions in British Columbia, at Masset on the Queen Charlotte Islands/Haida Gwaii in the 1890s, and on the adjacent mainland at Metlakatla, during the summer of 1890 and for several years in the early 1900s. Despite leading the busy life of a clergyman, Keen assembled extensive collections of natural history specimens, particularly of insects and mammals. He was spurred on by the likelihood that many specimens would represent species new to science, predictions that were later borne out. Keen initially sent specimens to the Natural History Museum in London, but later sent most of them to Dr. James Fletcher, Dominion Entomologist, in Ottawa, who forwarded many specimens to specialists in the United States and France for identification. Keen was among the first collectors of natural history specimens on the north coast of British Columbia and, in recognition of his contributions, eight insect taxa were named after him, based on the type specimens he collected in this region

    Ruby-throated Hummingbird, Archilochus colubris, Entanglements in Burdock, Arctium spp., at Delta Marsh, Manitoba

    Exotic burdock (Arctium spp.) pose a risk of mortality for small native birds, such as the Ruby-throated Hummingbird (Archilochus colubris), which may become entangled in its burrs. At Delta Marsh, Manitoba, we found 11 hummingbirds and five individuals of four species of songbirds entangled on burdock in the dune-ridge forest over a 20-year period. Entangled birds were mostly migrants. Most hummingbirds caught were juvenile males, whereas the few songbirds were mostly adult males. We suspect that hummingbird entanglements resulted from an attraction to the purple flowers of burdock, but aggressive interactions with conspecifics and other factors may have been involved. Birds may be at a higher risk of entanglement at important migratory stopover sites, such as Delta Marsh, where both burdock and large numbers of birds are concentrated in a small area

Available from the Financial Reporting Council (titled "Literature review") via the link in this recordExecutive Summary: The FRC commissioned a literature review of academic articles and research papers to determine the extent to which analyses have been undertaken which support the objectives of the Future of Corporate Reporting (FoCR) project. For the purpose of this review we agreed to define corporate reporting as financial and nonfinancial information included in annual reports, quarterly reports, restatements, earnings announcements and other ad-hoc and stand-alone reports (such as sustainability, CSR, integrated reports). We use the term financial reporting to indicate disclosure of financial information such as that contained in the financial statements, including the notes, but also the narrative discussion of corporate performance (i.e. narratives or other quantitative indicators that complement financial data, for example narrative information in the strategic report or management discussion and analysis). Non-financial reporting includes corporate social responsibility (CSR), social, environmental or sustainability reports (which are interchangeable terms), as well as other types of narrative information included in specific sections of the annual reports (such as for example, risk disclosure, or disclosures about environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues) or in other corporate documents (integrated reports, intellectual capital statements, etc.). A list of questions to be addressed was discussed between the academics and the FRC and the preliminary mapping between the structure of the report and the list of questions was agreed as shown in the following table.     Stable dietary isotopes and mtDNA from Woodland period southern Ontario people: results from a tooth sampling protocol

    AbstractBioarchaeological research must balance scholarly commitment to the generation of new knowledge, descendants' interests in their collective past, and the now common practice of rapid re-interment of excavated human remains. This paper documents the first results of a negotiated protocol built on the retention of one tooth per archaeologically derived skeleton, teeth that can then be used for destructive testing associated with ancient DNA and stable isotope investigations. Seven archaeological sites dating from the 13th to 16th centuries provided 53 teeth, 10 of which were subdivided between DNA and isotope labs. All tooth roots yielded haplogroup results, and five provided more detailed sequence results. Stable isotopes of carbon and nitrogen document heavy reliance on maize among all individuals, as well as reliance on a diverse range of fish. This work establishes baseline mtDNA information for Northern Iroquoians, and confirms the value of using dental tissues for dietary reconstruction. Particularly when human remains are fragmentary or co-mingled, this approach holds promise for ongoing incorporation of bioarchaeology into reconstructions of past peoples' lives

    Transcriptional profiling of zebrafish identifies host factors controlling susceptibility to Shigella flexneri

    Shigella flexneri is a human-adapted pathovar of Escherichia coli that can invade the intestinal epithelium, causing inflammation and bacillary dysentery. Although an important human pathogen, the host response to S. flexneri has not been fully described. Zebrafish larvae represent a valuable model to study human infections in vivo. Here we use a Shigella-zebrafish infection model to generate mRNA expression profiles of host response to Shigella infection at the whole animal level. Immune response-related processes dominate the signature of early Shigella infection (6 hours post-infection). Consistent with its clearance from the host, the signature of late Shigella infection (24 hours post-infection) is significantly changed, and only a small set of immune-related genes remain differentially expressed, including acod1 and gpr84. Using mutant lines generated by ENU, CRISPR mutagenesis and F0 Crispants, we show that acod1- and gpr84-deficient larvae are more susceptible to Shigella infection. Together, these results highlight the power of zebrafish to model infection by bacterial pathogens and reveal the mRNA expression of the early (acutely infected) and late (clearing) host response to Shigella infection

    Use of Energy Consumption during Milling to Fill a Measurement Gap in Hybrid Additive Manufacturing

    Coupling additive manufacturing (AM) with interlayer peening introduces bulk anisotropic properties within a build across several centimeters. Current methods to map high resolution anisotropy and heterogeneity are either destructive or have a limited penetration depth using a nondestructive method. An alternative pseudo-nondestructive method to map high-resolution anisotropy and heterogeneity is through energy consumption during milling. Previous research has shown energy consumption during milling correlates with surface integrity. Since surface milling of additively manufactured parts is often required for post-processing to improve dimensional accuracy, an opportunity is available to use surface milling as an alternative method to measure mechanical properties and build quality. The variation of energy consumption during the machining of additive parts, as well as hybrid AM parts, is poorly understood. In this study, the use of net cutting specific energy was proposed as a suitable metric for measuring mechanical properties after interlayer ultrasonic peening of 316 stainless steel. Energy consumption was mapped throughout half of a cuboidal build volume. Results indicated the variation of net cutting specific energy increased farther away from the surface and was higher for hybrid AM compared to as-printed and wrought. The average lateral and layer variation of the net cutting specific energy for printed samples was 81% higher than the control, which indicated a significantly higher degree of heterogeneity. Further, it was found that energy consumption was an effective process signature exhibiting strong correlations with microhardness. Anisotropy based on residual strains were measured using net cutting specific energy and validated by hole drilling. The proposed technique contributes to filling part of the measure gap in hybrid additive manufacturing and capitalizes on the preexisting need for machining of AM parts to achieve both goals of surface finish and quality assessment in one milling operation
