The Ethical Principles of Financial Wellness and Coaching for Law Enforcement

The implementation of wellness programs in law enforcement today is quickly becoming a primary focus of departments throughout the nation. Implementation of a financial coaching program as a component of a holistic officer wellness program can serve to greatly reduce one of the single largest causes of stress in society; money. One of the hallmarks of successful public safety is planning and preparation for the unknown. Individuals armed with practical knowledge and well-defined financial plans are better suited to confront personal and professional decisions with a clear mind and eyes fixed on the future. Successful implementation of a financial coaching program can lead to increases in physical, relational and mental health while also showing increases productivity as reflected in heightened service to the community. Program-specific information will be laid out in the following paper which will include areas of discussion between financial coach’s and participants as well as common vernacular used during the process. The following information will highlight some of the key areas addressed by the program and lead to a broader understanding of the scope of the financial coach’s involvement and the role of the department and participants alike

Przestrzeń wolności. Próby ucieczki przed logiką wartości Carla Schmitta

Der Artikel bietet Reflexion über die Wirkung der sog. Wertelogik an, die von Carl Schmitt in seinem berühmten Essay „Die Tyrannei der Werte“ erörtert wurde. Der Verfasser geht von der Analyse der Evolution aus, der die Kategorie „des Wertes“ im Laufe der Jahr-hunderte unterlag, so dass sie in zunehmendem Maße zu einem (scheinbar) politisch neutralen, spezifisch ökonomischen Begriff wurde. Dann stellt der Verfasser die von Max Weber gezeichnete Vision eines allgemeinen Wertekrieges dar, an die Carl Schmitt anknüpfte. Dabei wird erklärt, auf welche Weise beide Philosophen die Lösung des Problems anstrebten, indem sie nach einem wertefreien Raum suchten. Abschließend bezieht der Verfasser die Lösung von Schmitt auf die öffentliche Debatte im heutigen Polen und auf die Diskussion um die Verfassungsänderung aus dem Jahre 1997.The article presents a reflection upon the so called logic of values, described by Carl Schmitt in his famous essay entitled “The Tyranny of Values”. The author begins with an analysis of the way in which the category of “value” has evolved over the last centuries, becoming an increasingly politically neutral notion (at least on the surface), ascribed to the area of economy. Then he describes the vision of universal war of values outlined by Max Weber and adopted by Carl Schmitt, presenting the ways in which both thinkers tried to find a solution to the problem, looking for a space of “freedom from values”. In the end the author refers to  Schmitt’s solution in the context of public debate in modern Poland and the ongoing discussion over changing the constitution of 1997.Artykuł stanowi refleksję nad działaniem tzw. logiki wartości, opisanej przez Carla Schmitta w słynnym eseju Tyrania wartości. Autor wychodzi od analizy ewolucji, jakiej uległa kategoria „wartość” na przestrzeni ostatnich stuleci, stając się w coraz większym stopniu poję-ciem (z pozoru) politycznie neutralnym i właściwym dziedzinie ekonomii. Następnie przechodzi do opisu wizji powszechnej wojny wartości zarysowanej przez Maxa Webera i podjętej przez Carla Schmitta, pokazując, w jaki sposób obaj myśliciele starali się znaleźć rozwiązanie tego problemu, poszukując przestrzeni „wolności od wartości”. Na zakończenie autor odnosi Schmittowskie rozwiązanie do debaty publicznej we współczesnej Polsce i dyskusji dotyczącej zmiany konstytucji z 1997 roku

Pojęcie „socjalizmu” w myśli politycznej Alexisa de Tocqueville’a

The article presents an analysis of an original conception of socialism outlined in the works of Alexis de Tocqueville. The authorbegins with a brief presentation of historical context in which the views of French thinker were shaped, referring to his experiences from the period of the July Revolution of 1830 and the February Revolution of 1848. The author goes on to detailed analysis of his definition of socialism, making an indispensable reference to his republican conception of freedom and the role of a citizen in democracy. Finally, the author looks at Tocquevillian vision of genesis of socialist ideas, associated by him with anxiety, which democratic system inevitably generates.Artykuł stanowi analizę oryginalnego ujęcia socjalizmu, zarysowanego w pismach Alexisa de Tocqueville’a. Autor wychodzi od nakreślenia historycznego kontekstu, w jakim kształtowały się poglądy francuskiego myśliciela w tym obszarze, odnosząc się do jego doświadczeń z okresu rewolucji lipcowej 1830 r. oraz rewolucji lutowej 1848 r. Następnie przechodzi do szczegółowej analizy jego definicji socjalizmu, czyniąc niezbędne odwołanie do wyznawanej przez niego republikańskiej koncepcji wolności i roli, jaka przypada obywatelowi w demokracji. Na zakończenie autor przygląda się Tocqueville’owskiej wizji genezy myśli socjalistycznej, wiązanej przez arystokratę z niepokojami, jakie nieuchronnie rodzi system demokratyczny

Improving the Efficiency of an Ideal Heat Engine: The Quantum Afterburner

By using a laser and maser in tandem, it is possible to obtain laser action in the hot exhaust gases involved in heat engine operation. Such a "quantum afterburner" involves the internal quantum states of working gas atoms or molecules as well as the techniques of cavity quantum electrodynamics and is therefore in the domain of quantum thermodynamics. Development and implementation of a HACCP-based on farm quality assurance program for swine in Canada

A generic HACCP model was developed for farrow to finish operation by a technical committee composed of veterinarians, agronomists, producers and technical advisors from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and Health Canada.
