    Predicting the Mechanical Properties of Nanocomposites Reinforced with 1-D, 2-D and 3-D Nanomaterials

    Materials with features at the nanoscale can provide unique mechanical properties and increased functionality when included as part of a nanocomposite. This dissertation utilizes computational methods at multiple scales, including molecular dynamics (MD) and density functional theory (DFT), and the coupled atomistic and discrete dislocation multiscale method (CADD), to predict the mechanical properties of nanocomposites possessing nanomaterials that are either 1-D (carbyne chains), 2-D (graphene sheets), or 3-D (Al/amorphous-Si core-shell nanorod). The MD method is used to model Ni-graphene nanocomposites. The strength of a Ni-graphene nanocomposite is found to improve by increasing the gap between the graphene sheet and a crack embedded in the Ni matrix. Ni-graphene nanocomposites also show substantially greater strength than pure Ni, depending on the loading direction and crack orientation relative to the graphene sheet. Moreover, polycrystalline graphene may serve as a better reinforce in Ni-graphene nanocomposites due to its improved interfacial shear stress with the Ni matrix compared to pristine graphene. This work develops a patchwork quilt method for generating polycrystalline graphene sheets for use in MD models. Carbyne-based nanocomposites are modeled from first principles using DFT. This research finds that carbyne can only serve as an effective reinforcement in Ni-based nanocomposites when it is dielectrically screened from the Ni matrix, otherwise the carbyne structure is lost. When graphene is used as a dielectric screen, the local stiffness of the nanocomposite improves with the number of carbyne chains present. Specific stiffness is introduced as an alternative to elastic stiffness for characterizing low-dimensional materials because it is not dependent on volume when derived using an energy vs. strain relation. A two-material formulation of CADD is developed to model Al/a-Si core-shell nanorods under indentation/retraction. The structural deformation behavior is found to be dependent on the geometry of both core and shell. When present, the a-Si shell protects the Al core by delocalizing forces produced by the indenter. It is also found that substrate deformation becomes important for core-shell structures with sufficiently small cores. This work can help guide experimental and computational work related to the discussed 1-D, 2-D and 3-D nanomaterials and aid in future nanocomposite design

    Let GG be a finitely generated group, AA a finite set of generators and KK a subgroup of GG. We call the pair (G,K)(G,K) context-free if the set of all words over AA that reduce in GG to an element of KK is a context-free language. When KK is trivial, GG itself is called context-free; context-free groups have been classified more than 20 years ago in celebrated work of Muller and Schupp as the virtually free groups. Here, we derive some basic properties of such group pairs. Context-freeness is independent of the choice of the generating set. It is preserved under finite index modifications of GG and finite index enlargements of KK. If GG is virtually free and KK is finitely generated then (G,K)(G,K) is context-free. A basic tool is the following: (G,K)(G,K) is context-free if and only if the Schreier graph of (G,K)(G,K) with respect to AA is a context-free graph

    Migration of Langerhans Cells from Carcinogen-Treated Sheep Skin

    To define the mechanism(s) of carcinogen depletion of Langerhans cells (LC) from skin, the migration of LC from the skin to the regional lymph node was examined in carcinogen-treated, antigen-treated, and control sheep. This was assessed by cannulation of afferent lymphatic vessels that drain the treated areas of skin or the efferent lymphatic draining the regional lymph node. Cells draining from test or control skin were continuously collected and enumerated by indirect immunofluorescence and flow cytometry using specific anti-CD1 monoclonal antibodies. There was a marked increase in the rate of LC migration in the 8h following the application of the contact sensitizing antigen trinitrochlorobenzene (TNCB). The chemical carcinogen 7,12-dimethylbenz(a)anthracene (DMBA) triggered a tenfold-greater migration of LC compared with TNCB—with the peak response at 5 d. After DMBA treatment LC were also detected in the efferent lymph of the regional lymph node. It is concluded that the depletion of LC from carcinogentreated skin is due to the increased LC migration and not carcinogen-induced cell death

    Dc track edge interactions

    Includes bibliographical references.We have developed an experimental method for investigating the interaction between two dc track edges by studying the track edge noise. We conclude that two edges do not interact when they are several micrometers apart, but the noise reduces nearly to zero when their separation is less than about half a micrometer. There is a transition region that exists between these two limits. The net track edge noise power from two dc edges is quantized, implying that in our experiment track edges interact around the complete revolution of the disk or not at all.This work was supported in part by NSF Grant No. ECS-880470 and NSF Presidential Young Investigator Award (Indeck) ECS-89-5714

    Processable aqueous dispersions of graphene nanosheets

    Graphene sheets offer extraordinary electronic, thermal and mechanical properties and are expected to ïŹnd a variety of applications. A prerequisite for exploiting most proposed applications for graphene is the availability of processable graphene sheets in large quantities. The direct dispersion of hydrophobic graphite or graphene sheets in water without the assistance of dispersing agents has generally been considered to be an insurmountable challenge. Here we report that chemically converted graphene sheets obtained from graphite can readily form stable aqueous colloids through electrostatic stabilization. This discovery has enabled us to develop a facile approach to large-scale production of aqueous graphene dispersions without the need for polymeric or surfactant stabilizers. Our ïŹndings make it possible to process graphene materials using low-cost solution processing techniques, opening up enormous opportunities to use this unique carbon nanostructure for many technological applications

    Intermittent Feeding of Tylan Reduces Use of In-Feed Antibiotics While Still Controlling Incidence of Liver Abscesses in Finishing Steers

    Liver abscesses are a cause of concern for many feedlots across the country as they lead to a decrease in feedlot performance of finishing cattle as well as a decrease in the final carcass value. Loss in carcass value is due to not only the abscessed liver being condemned, but also due to trim loss associated with the condemned liver. The macrolide drug tylosin phosphate is the drug of choice for metaphylactic treatment of liver abscesses in feedlot cattle. The Food and Drug Administration approved the drug for over-the-counter use, however, from January 2017 all medically important (used in human health) antibiotics that are to be fed in production animal diets will require a veterinary feed directive. The objective of the veterinary feed directive program is to decrease the use of medically important antibiotics in animal production. These veterinary feed directives are similar to a prescription and will encourage the use of the drug in accordance to FDA-guidelines associated with that drug. Macrolide antibiotics are considered medically important and will need a veterinary feed directive. Therefore, it is imperative to look at different methods to control liver abscesses in feedlot cattle. Various studies have noted that macrolide antibiotics (such as tylosin phosphate) are effective against pathogens for moderate to prolonged periods after initial use. The purpose of this study was to determine whether feeding tylosin phosphate periodically throughout the finishing period will have a comparable effect on decreasing liver abscesses as when we would feed tylosin phosphate continuously through the finishing period

    The assessment of usability of electronic shopping: A heuristic evaluation

    Today there are thousands of electronic shops accessible via the Web. Some provide user-friendly features whilst others seem not to consider usability factors at all. Yet, it is critical that the electronic shopping interface is user-friendly so as to help users to obtain their desired results. This study applied heuristic evaluation to examine the usability of current electronic shopping. In particular, it focused on four UK-based supermarkets offering electronic services: including ASDA, Iceland, Sainsbury, and Tesco. The evaluation consists of two stages: a free-flow inspection and a task-based inspection. The results indicate that the most significant and common usability problems have been found to lie within the areas of ‘User Control and Freedom’ and ‘Help and Documentation’. The findings of this study are applied to develop a set of usability guidelines to support the future design of effective interfaces for electronic shopping
