Money Talks: The Influence of Economic Power on the Employment Laws and Policies in the United States and France

Money talks. Money changes everything. There is nothing money cannot buy. These are all familiar phrases used to describe the desirable, and undesirable, effects of money. Money can also mean power, and more specifically, economic power. Indeed, economic power is becoming an increasingly important concept for a wide range of academic disciplines. For example, the concept of economic power has heavily influenced a new theory of international relations, namely globalization. Many globalization theorists argue that economic power is replacing military power in global politics. Other scholars contend that globalization is creating a new world order where economics are the central focus. Economic power not only shapes international relations, but it also influences national employment laws and policies. For example, economic power can be measured by comparing a country\u27s employment and unemployment rates. Generally speaking, if a country\u27s economy is strong, the employment rate rises and the unemployment rate falls. Conversely, if an economy is faltering, the employment rate falls and the unemployment rate rises

SPECIFICITY IN PLYOMETRIC TRAINING FOR THE DISCUS THROW

Methods of artificially manipulating the athlete's body into an ideal technique for competition in the discus event in track and field has not been firmly established through research studies. Although McLaughlin (1981), Jarver (1980), Moynihan (1983), Woicik (1982), Gambetta (1981), and Wilt (1976) stated their athletes obtained better throwing patterns by using plyometrics than by using traditional training methods, their training methods have not been tested through critical research. McLaughlin (1981) used a platform four inches to six inches in height at the back of the circle and had his athletes land in an exaggerated bent-leg position prior to the drive off the power leg. Jarver (1980) and Gambetta (1 81) had their athletes land in the center of the circle from a 30 to 40 centimeter elevated position and then perform a normal delivery. Wilt (1976) established 12 to 18 inches as his elevation height for throwers to use with five repetitions of six to eight sets

How peer mentoring fosters graduate attributes

The most common approach to foster graduate attributes is to teach them in the curriculum of a bachelor’s degree. However, it is difficult to include every graduate attribute in every degree. In this article we consider how co-curricular peer mentoring might provide an additional approach. We examine a case study of the mentors of the Peer Assisted Study Sessions (PASS) programme at a research-intensive university in New Zealand, and we examine the process by which they developed graduate attributes. PASS mentors reported that they developed a range of graduate attributes such as communication, critical thinking, and ethical responsibility, due to the extra responsibility and leadership involved in being a mentor in an authentic work environment. We argue that co-curricular programmes such as PASS can provide useful additional opportunities for students to acquire and develop graduate attributes. While not all students will be able to participate as PASS mentors, we also argue that our findings can inform other programmes for fostering graduate attributes. If these programmes offer authentic responsibilities to participating students, they may be more effective at fostering graduate attributes

    Evaluation of ARCAM Deposited Ti-6Al-4V

    Get PDF
A wide range of Metal Additive Manufacturing (MAM) technologies are becoming available. One of the challenges in using new technologies for aerospace systems is demonstrating that the process and system has the ability to manufacture components that meet the high quality requirements on a statistically significant basis. The widest-used system for small to medium sized components is the ARCAM system manufactured in Gothenburg, Sweden. This system features a 4kW electron-beam gun, and has a chamber volume of 250mm long x 250mm wide x 250mm to 400mm tall. This paper will describe the basis for the quality and consistency requirements, the experimental and evaluation procedures used for the evaluation, and an analysis of the results for Ti-6Al-4V

I teach in a transactional clinic called the Urban Development Law Clinic. In my Clinic, we represent non-profit tax-exempt organizations that engage in real estate, economic, and community development. Some of our clients include Greater Cleveland Habitat for Humanity and Karamu House, which is a theater and community arts center. We serve as general counsel for some clients and provide legal advice on an as needed basis for others. The Clinic provides legal advice on real estate matters, corporate governance, transactions, and tax issues. The complexity of matters that we handle ranges from drafting a code of regulations to representing clients in large development projects such as a $5.1 million community center for seniors
