    Modern electric fences have remote controls and remote monitors that communicate with the energizer through the active fence wire. This manuscript looks at the impact of repair joints on the data communications between energizer and remotes. We report measurements of nonlinear rust-induced characteristics in joints and we draw conclusions about their effects in the context of an electric fence carrying data communications signals. We furthermore demonstrate how their nonlinear characteristics can cause mixing and detection effects that could account for radio reception

Utilities are often required to balance solar generation facilities to meet consumer demand, which often includes the costly process of activating/deactivating a fossil fuel facility. Therefore, there is considerable interest in increasing the accuracy and the granularity of solar power generation predictions in order to reduce the cost of grid management.     A systematic review on fitness testing in adult male basketball players : tests adopted, characteristics reported and recommendations for practice

    Background: As basketball match-play requires players to possess a wide range of physical characteristics, many tests have been introduced in the literature to identify talent and quantify fitness in various samples of players. However, a synthesis of the literature to identify the most frequently used tests, outcome variables, and normative values for basketball-related physical characteristics in adult male basketball players is yet to be conducted. Objective: The primary objectives of this systematic review are to (1) identify tests and outcome variables used to assess physical characteristics in adult male basketball players across all competition levels, (2) report a summary of anthropometric, muscular power, linear speed, change-of-direction speed, agility, strength, anaerobic capacity, and aerobic capacity in adult male basketball players based on playing position and competition level, and (3) introduce a framework outlining recommended testing approaches to quantify physical characteristics in adult male basketball players. Methods: A systematic review of MEDLINE, PubMed, SPORTDiscus, Scopus, and Web of Science was performed following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines to identify relevant studies. To be eligible for inclusion, studies were required to: (1) be original research articles; (2) be published in a peer-reviewed journal; (3) have full-text versions available in the English language; and (4) include the primary aim of reporting tests used and/or the physical characteristics of adult (i.e., ≄ 18 years of age) male basketball players. Additionally, data from the top 10 draft picks who participated in the National Basketball Association combined from 2011–12 to 2020–21 were extracted from the official league website to highlight the physical characteristics of elite 19- to 24-year-old basketball players. Results: A total of 1684 studies were identified, with 375 being duplicates. Consequently, the titles and abstracts of 1309 studies were screened and 231 studies were eligible for full-text review. The reference list of each study was searched, with a further 59 studies identified as eligible for review. After full-text screening, 137 studies identified tests, while 114 studies reported physical characteristics in adult male basketball players. Conclusions: Physical characteristics reported indicate a wide range of abilities are present across playing competitions. The tests and outcome variables reported in the literature highlight the multitude of tests currently being used. Because there are no accepted international standards for physical assessment of basketball players, establishing normative data is challenging. Therefore, future testing should involve repeatable protocols that are standardised and provide outcomes that can be monitored across time. Recommendations for testing batteries in adult male basketball players are provided so improved interpretation of data can occur.     Anthropometric and physiological predictors of flat-water 1000 m kayak performance in young adolescents and the effectiveness of a high volume training camp.

    Our purpose was to determine the relationship of anthropometric and physiological variables with 1000m flat-water kayak (K1000) performance. A secondary purpose was to determine the effectiveness of a high volume training camp. High performance young adolescent kayakers (n=13, 8 males, 5 females, 15±1 yrs) participated in this study. Testing before and after the 3-4 week training camp included anthropometric measurements (height, sitting height, arm span, and body mass), strength (1-RM: bench press and bench pull), flexibility (sit and reach), and an incremental kayak ergometer test to determine peak oxygen uptake (VO2peak) and anaerobic threshold, and an open water K1000 time trial. K1000 time was significantly correlated with height (r=-0.81; p\u3c0.01), sitting height (r=-0.85; p\u3c0.01), arm span (r=-0.87; p\u3c0.01), bench press (r=-0.92; p\u3c0.01), bench pull (r=-0.85; p\u3c0.01), VO2peak (r=-0.87; p\u3c0.01) and anaerobic threshold (r=-0.83; p\u3c0.05). Following the training camp there were no significant differences in body mass, strength, and VO2 peak, however, anaerobic threshold (33.6±6.2 to 42.3±8.8 ml‱kg-1‱min-1, p=0.001) and K1000 (302±44 to 289±31 sec, p=0.007) significantly improved. The results of this study suggest that K1000 performance in young adolescent kayakers appears to require a high aerobic and strength contribution and that a high volume training camp is effective for improving anaerobic threshold and performance

    Fractional delay estimation for blind source separation and localization of temporomandibular joint sounds

    Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) sound sources are generated from the two joints connecting the lower jaw to the temporal bone. Such sounds are important diagnostic signs in patients suffering from temporomandibular disorder (TMD). In this study, we address the problem of source separation of the TMJ sounds. In particular, we examine patients with only one TMJ generating “clicks.” Thereafter, we consider the TMJ sounds recorded from the two auditory canals as mixtures of clicks from the TMD joint and the noise produced by the other healthy/normal TMJ.We next exploit the statistical nonstationary nature of the TMJ signals by employing the degenerate unmixing estimation technique (DUET) algorithm, a time–frequency (T–F) approach to separate the sources. As the DUET algorithm requires the sensors to be closely spaced, which is not satisfied by our recording setup, we have to estimate the delay between the recorded TMJ sounds to perform an alignment of the mixtures. Thus, the proposed extension of DUET enables an essentially arbitrary separation of the sensors. It is also shown that DUET outperforms the convolutive Infomax algorithm in this particular TMJ source separation scenario. The spectra of both separated TMJ sources with our method are comparable to those available in existing literature. Examination of both spectra suggests that the click source has a better audible prominence than the healthy TMJ source. Furthermore, we address the problem of source localization. This can be achieved automatically by detecting the sign of our proposed mutual information estimator which exhibits a maximum at the delay between the two mixtures. As a result, the localized separated TMJ sources can be of great clinical value to dental specialists

    Towards an immersive learning knowledge tree: a conceptual framework for mapping knowledge and tools in the field

Combining efforts for better exploration of this field from the different disciplines requires researchers to communicate and coordinate effectively. We call upon the community of immersive learning researchers for planting the Knowledge Tree of Immersive Learning Research, a proposal for a systematization effort for this field, combining both scholarly and practical knowledge, cultivating a robust and ever-growing knowledge base and methodological toolbox for immersive learning. This endeavor aims at promoting evidence-informed practice and guiding future research in the field.     Hatch’d is inspired by breakfast food favorites commonly spotted on cafĂ© menus. Students posed a challenge to their class, to invite a playful and elevated breakfast experience, into the fine dining kitchen lab. Where new American cuisine meets brunch. Guests were catered to a lavish and upscale casual dining atmosphere. Breakfast invokes a memorable and cozy experience. Playful plating, such as the house-smoked bacon clipped to golden hangers and flourished with baby’s breath, features seasonal, comforting flavors. The miniature pastry flight and hand-crafted drinks using specialized techniques and equipment separates Hatch’d from the rest. It is a hub for students and locals alike to come together and share comfort and creativity. The tasting menu consisted of a six-course experience. The first course contained two items: smoked bacon and a parfait. The bacon was cured and smoked in-house, and the yogurt was made from scratch. The second course was a frisĂ©e salad with Arctic char and citrus. For this course the char was salted, cured and dry aged before cold smoking it. The staple of eggs benedict for breakfast was the third course, using quail eggs and meat. A small tantalizing health shot of kale, apple, ginger, and jalapeno was used as a palate cleanser. The fifth course was an interpretation on a classic chicken and waffles dish, making a Thai-inspired takoyaki. The meal was wrapped up with a balanced pastry flight of a croissant, profiterole, donut, cinnamon roll

    Chip-Integrated Voltage Sources for Control of Trapped Ions

    Trapped-ion quantum-information processors offer many advantages for achieving high-fidelity operations on a large number of qubits, but current experiments require bulky external equipment for classical and quantum control of many ions. We demonstrate the cryogenic operation of an ion trap that incorporates monolithically integrated high-voltage complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) electronics (±8V full swing) to generate surface-electrode control potentials without the need for external analog voltage sources. A serial bus programs an array of 16 digital-to-analog converters (DACs) within a single chip that apply voltages to segmented electrodes on the chip to control ion motion. Additionally, we present the incorporation of an integrated circuit that uses an analog switch to reduce voltage noise on trap electrodes due to the integrated amplifiers by over 50 dB. We verify the function of our integrated electronics by performing diagnostics with trapped ions and find noise and speed performance similar to those that we observe using external control elements
