    We study the solutions of a generalized Allen-Cahn equation deduced from a Landau energy functional, endowed with a non-constant higher order stiffness. We analytically solve the stationary problem and deduce the existence of so-called compactons, namely, connections on a finite interval between the two phases. The dynamics problem is numerically solved and compacton formation is described

    We study volume transition phenomenon in hydrogels within the framework of Flory-Rehner thermodynamic modelling; we show that starting from different models for the Flory parameter different conclusions can be achieved, in terms of admissible coexisting equilibria of the system. In particular, with explicit reference to a one-dimensional problem we establish the ranges of both temperature and traction which allow for the coexistence of a swollen and a shrunk phase. Through consideration of an augmented Flory-Rehner free-energy, which also accounts for the gradient of volume changes, we determine the position of the interface between the coexisting phases, and capture the connection profile between them

    Kink Localization under Asymmetric Double-Well Potential

    We study diffuse phase interfaces under asymmetric double-well potential energies with degenerate minima and demonstrate that the limiting sharp profile, for small interface energy cost, on a finite space interval is in general not symmetric and its position depends exclusively on the second derivatives of the potential energy at the two minima (phases). We discuss an application of the general result to porous media in the regime of solid-fluid segregation under an applied pressure and describe the interface between a fluid-rich and a fluid-poor phase. Asymmetric double-well potential energies are also relevant in a very different field of physics as that of Brownian motors. An intriguing analogy between our result and the direction of the dc soliton current in asymmetric substrate driven Brownian motors is pointed out

    The application of soil gas technique to geothermal exploration:study of “hidden” potential geothermal systems

    Geochemical studies were conducted using soil-gas and flux surveyings for locating both permeable zones in buried reservoirs and the presence of possible gaseous haloes linked to active geothermal systems. In this work we focused our interest on the distribution of soil-gas concentrations (Rn, Th, He, H2, O2, N2, CO2, CH4 and H2S) in the soil air of the Tetitlan area (Nayarit, Mexico) considered a potential thermal field and characterized by scarcity of surface manifestations. A total of 154 soil-gas samples and 346 CO2 and CH4 flux measurements were collected in an area of about 80 square kilometres. The performed soil-gas and flux geochemical surveys highlighted a general rising patterns linked to local fault system, with the important implication that the highest CO2 and CH4 fluxes, as well as Rn concentrations, could be used in undeveloped geothermal systems to identify main upflow regions and areas of increased and deep permeability

Radon is used as a tracer gas to provide a qualitative idea of gas transfer (velocity and flux), carbon dioxide and methane are believed to act as carriers for other gases (i.e., Rn and He), helium and hydrogen are used as shallow signals of crustal leaks along faults (Ciotoli et al., 2005). Methane is also considered both a characteristic biogenic indicator of organic matter deposits and a tracer of major crustal discontinuity. A total of 154 soil gas samples were collected in an area of about 80 square kilometres. The same area was investigated throughout a total of 346 of CO2 and CH4 flux measurements

    During the last 30 years of studies in the field of mass movements located in the calcareous-marly and marly-sandy Apennines (Umbria-Marches and Latium-Abruzzi regions), over to a large number of landslides with different dimensions, even a lot of deep-seated gravitational slope deformations (DSGSDs) have been recognized and analysed. These phenomena are also located in that sector of central Italy affected by a cold climate during the past and actually temperate (central Apennine chain)
