Between Social Opprobrium and Repeat Trafficking: choices and chances of Albanian women deported from the UK
Book abstract: Human trafficking is widely considered to be the fastest growing branch of trafficking. As this important book reveals, it has moved rapidly up the agenda of states and international organisations since the early-1990s, not only because of this growth, but also as its implications for security and human rights have become clearer. This fascinating study by international experts provides original research findings on human trafficking, with particular reference to Europe, South- East Asia and Australia. A major focus is on why and how many states and organisations act in ways that undermine trafficked victims' rights, as part of 'quadruple victimisation'. It compares and contrasts policies and suggests which seem to work best and why. The contributors also advocate radical new approaches that most states and other formal organisations appear loath to introduce, for reasons that are explored in this unique book
Albanians, Albanianism and the Strategic Subversion of Stereotypes.
This contribution describes the ways in which various European host countriesâ stereotypical imageries of Albanians as being culturally particularly prone to violence have forced contemporary transnational Albanian migrants into subversive strategies and practices of identity mimicry. This powerful stereotypical imagery, a sub-category of Balkanism known as Albanianism, can be traced through various European historical literature and contemporary policy as well as in historical auto-imagery which all have always mutually mirrored and influenced each other. The study finds that âAlbanian violenceâ valorised according to political and economic interests, i.e. romantically glorified as ânobleâ or demonised â typically in reference to customary kanun traditions and customary ideals of heroism, manly courage and honour â in both hetero- and auto-imageries. But, equally, mutually sceptical attitudes (Occidentalist and Orientalist) can be identified as well as the historical precedents for outsiders appropriating paternalist protectionism towards the Albanians in reference to âprimitiveâ local customs. In the end it emerges that, today, it is exactly those criminals â who by their actions help to perpetuate essentialist generalisations of Albanian violence â are the ones benefiting from contemporary Albanianism in implicit discursive alliance with contemporary, exclusivist, immigration policy
Phenological traits such as the timing of bud break and flowering are regulated by the activity of various genes within an intricate control network. Besides this polygenic nature, the strong impact of environmental cues complicates the study of these traits additionally. In the present work, quantitative trait loci (QTL) for time of bud break on the linkage groups 3, 4, 7 and for time of full bloom on the linkage groups 1, 4, 7, 8, 14, 17, 18 and 19 of a biparental grapevine cross population were identified. Additive effects of the flowering time QTLs could be demonstrated. The QTL on linkage group 14 has the greatest influence on flowering time and is regarded as the main QTL for this trait in the investigated cross population. By increasing the number of F1-individuals and creating an improved genetic map, the positions of the QTLs in the grapevine genome could be refined. So far, no genetic markers for marker assisted selection (MAS) of flowering time are available. The availability of such markers would allow the targeted breeding of later flowering varieties in the face of climate change leading to accelerated phenology. The transferability of SSR markers from the identified QTL regions to a set of genetically diverse grapevine varieties was examined. As a result, several SSR markers can be proposed, which show the potential to enable a counter selection of earlier flowering genotypes in breeding programs. The seasonal expression profiles of candidate genes within the QTL regions on linkage groups 7 and 14 were examined. They play potential roles (i) in the regulation of floral induction and inflorescence branching within the winter buds, (ii) in the initiation of bud break and the associated differentiation and correct morphological development of leaves, (iii) in inhibition of bud break by maintaining dormancy in winter and (iv) in single flower development after bud burst

STARR with ContourÂź Transtarâą: prospective multicentre European study
OBJECTIVE: The stapled transanal rectal resection (STARR) in patients with defecation disorders is limited by the shape and capacity of the circular stapler. A new device has been recently developed, the Contour Transtar stapler, in order to improve the safety and effectiveness of the STARR technique. The study has been designed to confirm this declaration.METHOD: From January to June 2007 a prospective European multicentre study of consecutive patients with defecation disorder caused by internal rectal prolapse underwent the new STARR technique. The assessment of perioperative morbidity and functional outcome after 6 weeks, 3 and 12 months was documented by different scores.RESULTS: In all 75 patients, median age 64, the Transtar procedure was performed with 9% intraoperative difficulties, 7% postoperative complications and no mortality. The mean reduction of the ODS score was -15.6 (95%-CI: -17.3 to -13.8, P < 0.0001), mean reduction of SSS was -12.6 (95%-CI: -14.2 to -11.2; P < 0.0001). 41% stated improvement of their continence status by CCF score, only 4 patients (5%) had deterioration.CONCLUSION: The Transtar procedure is technically demanding, with good functional results similar to the conventional STARR.<br/
