Program to develop sprayed, plastically deformable compressor shroud seal materials
A study of fundamental rub behavior for ten dense sprayed materials and eight current compressor clearance materials has been conducted. A literature survey of a wide variety of metallurgical and thermophysical properties was conducted and correlated to rub behavior. Based on these results, the most promising dense rub material was Cu-9Al. Additional studies on the effects of porosity, incursion rate, blade solidity and ambient temperature were carried out on aluminum bronze (Cu-9Al-1Fe) with and without a 515B Feltmetal underlayer
Onsager relations in a two-dimensional electron gas with spin-orbit coupling
Theory predicts for the two-dimensional electrons gas with only Rashba
spin-orbit interaction a vanishing spin Hall conductivity and at the same time
a finite inverse spin Hall effect. We show how these seemingly contradictory
results are compatible with the Onsager relations: the latter do hold for spin
and particle (charge) currents in the two-dimensional electron gas, although
(i) their form depends on the experimental setup and (ii) a vanishing bulk spin
Hall conductivity does not necessarily imply a vanishing spin Hall effect. We
also discuss the situation in which extrinsic spin orbit from impurities is
present and the bulk spin Hall conductivity can be different from zero.Comment: Accepted versio
Three-dimensional elliptic grid generation technique with application to turbomachinery cascades
Described is a numerical method for generating 3-D grids for turbomachinery computational fluid dynamic codes. The basic method is general and involves the solution of a quasi-linear elliptic partial differential equation via pointwise relaxation with a local relaxation factor. It allows specification of the grid point distribution on the boundary surfaces, the grid spacing off the boundary surfaces, and the grid orthogonality at the boundary surfaces. A geometry preprocessor constructs the grid point distributions on the boundary surfaces for general turbomachinery cascades. Representative results are shown for a C-grid and an H-grid for a turbine rotor. Two appendices serve as user's manuals for the basic solver and the geometry preprocessor
Non-linear conductivity and quantum interference in disordered metals
We report on a novel non-linear electric field effect in the conductivity of
disordered conductors. We find that an electric field gives rise to dephasing
in the particle-hole channel, which depresses the interference effects due to
disorder and interaction and leads to a non-linear conductivity. This
non-linear effect introduces a field dependent temperature scale and
provides a microscopic mechanism for electric field scaling at the
metal-insulator transition. We also study the magnetic field dependence of the
non-linear conductivity and suggest possible ways to experimentally verify our
predictions. These effects offer a new probe to test the role of quantum
interference at the metal-insulator transition in disordered conductors.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
Improved high pressure turbine shroud
A new high pressure turbine shroud material has been developed from the consolidation of prealloyed powders of Ni, Cr, Al and Y. The new material, a filler for cast turbine shroud body segments, is called Genaseal. The development followed the identification of oxidation resistance as the primary cause of prior shroud deterioration, since conversion to oxides reduces erosion resistance and increases spalling under thermal cycled engine conditions. The NICrAlY composition was selected in preference to NIAL and FeCRALY alloys, and was formulated to a prescribed density range that offers suitable erosion resistance, thermal conductivity and elastic modulus for improved behavior as a shroud
Multiresolution weighted norm equivalences and applications
Summary.: We establish multiresolution norm equivalences in weighted spaces L 2 w ((0,1)) with possibly singular weight functions w(x)≥0 in (0,1). Our analysis exploits the locality of the biorthogonal wavelet basis and its dual basis functions. The discrete norms are sums of wavelet coefficients which are weighted with respect to the collocated weight function w(x) within each scale. Since norm equivalences for Sobolev norms are by now well-known, our result can also be applied to weighted Sobolev norms. We apply our theory to the problem of preconditioning p-Version FEM and wavelet discretizations of degenerate elliptic and parabolic problems from financ
Wavelet solution of variable order pseudodifferential equations
Sobolev spaces H m(x)(I) of variable order 0<m(x)<1 on an interval I⊂ℝ arise as domains of Dirichlet forms for certain quadratic, pure jump Feller processes X t∈ℝ with unbounded, state-dependent intensity of small jumps. For spline wavelets with complementary boundary conditions, we establish multilevel norm equivalences in H m(x)(I) and prove preconditioning and wavelet matrix compression results for the variable order pseudodifferential generators A of X. Sufficient conditions on A to satisfy a Gårding inequality in H m(x)(I) and time-analyticity of the semigroup T t associated with the Feller process X t are established. As application, wavelet-based algorithms of log-linear complexity are obtained for the valuation of contingent claims on pure jump Feller-Lévy processes X t with state-dependent jump intensity by numerical solution of the corresponding Kolmogoroff equation
Spin polarizations and spin Hall currents in a two-dimensional electron gas with magnetic impurities
We consider a two-dimensional electron gas in the presence of Rashba
spin-orbit coupling, and study the effects of magnetic s-wave impurities and
long-range non-magnetic disorder on the spin-charge dynamics of the system. We
focus on voltage induced spin polarizations and their relation to spin Hall
currents. Our results are obtained using the quasiclassical Green function
technique, and hold in the full range of the disorder parameter .Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures. References added, minor stylistic modification
Electronic Aharonov-Bohm Effect Induced by Quantum Vibrations
Mechanical displacements of a nanoelectromechanical system (NEMS) shift the
electron trajectories and hence perturb phase coherent charge transport through
the device. We show theoretically that in the presence of a magnetic feld such
quantum-coherent displacements may give rise to an Aharonov-Bohm-type of
effect. In particular, we demonstrate that quantum vibrations of a suspended
carbon nanotube result in a positive nanotube magnetoresistance, which
decreases slowly with the increase of temperature. This effect may enable one
to detect quantum displacement fluctuations of a nanomechanical device.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Sparse Deterministic Approximation of Bayesian Inverse Problems
We present a parametric deterministic formulation of Bayesian inverse
problems with input parameter from infinite dimensional, separable Banach
spaces. In this formulation, the forward problems are parametric, deterministic
elliptic partial differential equations, and the inverse problem is to
determine the unknown, parametric deterministic coefficients from noisy
observations comprising linear functionals of the solution.
We prove a generalized polynomial chaos representation of the posterior
density with respect to the prior measure, given noisy observational data. We
analyze the sparsity of the posterior density in terms of the summability of
the input data's coefficient sequence. To this end, we estimate the
fluctuations in the prior. We exhibit sufficient conditions on the prior model
in order for approximations of the posterior density to converge at a given
algebraic rate, in terms of the number of unknowns appearing in the
parameteric representation of the prior measure. Similar sparsity and
approximation results are also exhibited for the solution and covariance of the
elliptic partial differential equation under the posterior. These results then
form the basis for efficient uncertainty quantification, in the presence of
data with noise
