Vetoing atmospheric neutrinos in a high energy neutrino telescope
We discuss the possibility to suppress downward atmospheric neutrinos in a
high energy neutrino telescope. This can be achieved by vetoing the muon which
is produced by the same parent meson decaying in the atmosphere. In principle,
atmospheric neutrinos with energies TeV and zenith angle up to 60
degree can be vetoed with an efficiency of > 99%. Practical realization will
depend on the depth of the neutrino telescope, on the muon veto efficiency and
on the ability to identify downward moving neutrinos with a good energy
estimation.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in Physical Review
Abstract
Within this thesis, the limiting physical and technical conditions for the
miniaturisation of novel photo acoustic gas detectors have been
investigated. Well in advance to the previous work in the field of
miniaturised photo acoustic gas detectors, this thesis provides a complex
mathematical model that considers physical, technical and environmental
conditions as dedicated parameters. The model has been developed both in
the time and frequency domain. It combines the two traditional modelling
approaches of a rate-equation based time-domain investigation for
non-resonant detectors and the wave-equation based frequency-domain
considerations for photo acoustic resonators. The equality of this approach
to existing models has been verified. As an advance to existing models
however, the parameter approach allows to investigate the relations and
dependencies of all these parameters against each other over broad
variation ranges. Based on this advanced model, complete system simulations
and behaviour studies become possible. While in the existing work on photo
acoustics only single gases have been considered, this thesis investigates
the impact of interactions between different types of molecules and
introduces this as a parameter into the theoretical model. Both theoretical
and experimental evaluations prove that the effects studied in such gas
mixtures can be used to improve the sensitivity and selectivity of novel
photo acoustics gas detectors. It has been shown, that using modern
technology and processes known from micro system engineering, the design of
reliable and high performing gas detectors is possible. The concepts
introduced, developed and realised in this work already take into account
the demands of low-cost, high volume manufacturing and potential
applications. Finally, an integrated sensor concept based on both advanced
photo acoustic detectors and micro machined infrared emitters has been
introduced and investigated. The improved performance of this sensor
concept compared to state-of-the-art technology has been verified.Chapter
one of this work summarises the current state of photo acoustic technology
not only for gas sensing applications but also in the fields of fluid and
solid state analysis. In a second step, competitive infrared radiation
based detection concepts are described and summarised. In chapter two, the
novel parametrical mathematical model is derived and evaluated against
existing models. The first part of chapter three introduces a laboratory
experimental setup to investigate and verify the derived mathematical model
in parametric studies. In the second part of chapter three, more
sophisticated parameter dependencies are investigated by a combined
approach of system simulations and tests. A dedicated approach to derive
characteristic detector parameters such as Sensitivity, Noise Equivalent
Power and Detectivity is developed here as well.Based on these
considerations and investigations, boundary conditions for advanced photo
acoustic detectors and related components are derived in the first two
sections of chapter four. In the last section of chapter four, novel photo
acoustic detectors are developed, realised and characterised. Finally, an
integrated sensor concept is introduced, realised and evaluated as it has
been shown in this work that the final gas sensitivity of a detector is
strongly depending on the sensor concept and design. In the final chapter
five, both the detector and sensor performance is compared to
state-of-the-art detectors and sensors as summarised in chapter one.
Possible improvements on the introduced concepts and possible applications
provide a view into the future of photo acoustic gas detection.
The design study of IceCube DeepCore : Characterization and veto studies
System-Optimal Routing of Traffic Flows with User Constraints in Networks with Congestion
The design of route-guidance systems faces a well-known dilemma. The approach that theoretically yields the
system-optimal traffic pattern may discriminate against some users, for the sake of favoring others. Proposed
alternate models, however, do not directly address the system perspective and may result in inferior performance.
We propose a novel model and corresponding algorithms to resolve this dilemma. We present computational
results on real-world instances and compare the new approach with the well-established traffic assignment model.
The quintessence is that system-optimal routing of traffic flow with explicit integration of user constraints leads to a
better performance than the user equilibrium while simultaneously guaranteeing a superior fairness compared to the
pure system optimum

High-performance giant magnetoresistive sensorics on flexible Si membranes
We fabricate high-performance giant magnetoresistive (GMR) sensorics on Si wafers, which are subsequently thinned down to 100 μm or 50 μm to realize mechanically flexible sensing elements. The performance of the GMR sensors upon bending is determined by the thickness of the Si membrane. Thus, bending radii down to 15.5 mm and 6.8 mm are achieved for the devices on 100 μm and 50 μm Si supports, respectively. The GMR magnitude remains unchanged at the level of (15.3 ± 0.4)% independent of the support thickness and bending radius. However, a progressive broadening of the GMR curve is observed associated with the magnetostriction of the containing Ni81Fe19 alloy, which is induced by the tensile bending strain generated on the surface of the Si membrane. An effective magnetostriction value of λs = 1.7 × 10−6 is estimated for the GMR stack. Cyclic bending experiments showed excellent reproducibility of the GMR curves during 100 bending cycles
LGG-11. Analysis of neurosurgical complications in pediatric supratentorial midline low-grade glioma – results from the German LGG [Abstract]
OBJECTIVE: Around 80% of all pediatric low-grade glioma (LGG) patients undergo at least one tumor surgery. Interventions in the supratentorial midline (SML) are particularly challenging due to the proximity of eloquent areas, yet associated complications are scarcely reported. We investigated the frequency of neurosurgical complications and related impairments and aimed at identifying risk factors for their appearance related to patient characteristics or the procedure. PATIENTS AND METHOD: Records were retrospectively analyzed from 321 patients with SML-LGG from the successive multicenter German LGG studies, who underwent neurosurgery at 63 hospitals between May 12th,1998 and June 27th, 2020. RESULTS: 543 operations (235 resections, 168 biopsies, 140 non-tumor interventions) were performed on 321 patients (54% male, median age 9 years, 11% NF1 positive, 43% visual pathway glioma). Surgical mortality rate was 0,93% (n=3). Applying the Drake classification postoperative surgical morbidity was observed in 259 cases (47,7%), medical morbidity in 103 cases (19%). 30-day persistence rate of newly developed neurological deficits was 44,8% (65/165 cases); neuroendocrine impairment affected 57 patients (17,8%), visual deterioration 34 (10,6%). Complications/impairments following resections were associated with patient age below 3 years at operation, tumor volume above 80 cm(3), presence of hydrocephalus prior to surgery, complete resection, intervention in centers with fewer reported resections and surgery performed between 1998-2006 by univariate analysis. In contrast, the neurosurgical approach, tumor location, NF1 status as well as previous antineoplastic treatment were not associated with the frequency of complications. Regarding biopsies, open biopsies showed significantly more surgery-associated complications/impairments compared with stereotactic procedures. CONCLUSIONS: Neurosurgery-associated complications and impairments were frequent in pediatric patients with supratentorial midline LGG undergoing open surgery in the German LGG-studies. We identified six patient- and institution-associated factors that may increase the risk for surgical complications. Skills at the treating center and extent of resection should be considered appropriately prior to intervention
