    Second Order Correlation Function of a Phase Fluctuating Bose-Einstein Condensate

    The coherence properties of phase fluctuating Bose-Einstein condensates are studied both theoretically and experimentally. We derive a general expression for the N-particle correlation function of a condensed Bose gas in a highly elongated trapping potential. The second order correlation function is analyzed in detail and an interferometric method to directly measure it is discussed and experimentally implemented. Using a Bragg diffraction interferometer, we measure intensity correlations in the interference pattern generated by two spatially displaced copies of a parent condensate. Our experiment demonstrates how to characterize the second order correlation function of a highly elongated condensate and to measure its phase coherence length.Comment: 22 pages, 5 figure

    Insertion as an alternative to workfare: active labour-market schemes in the Parisian suburbs

    Many governments have tightened the link between welfare and work by attaching conditionality to out-of-work benefits, extending these requirements to new client groups, and imposing market competition and greater managerial control in service delivery – principles typically characterised as ‘workfare’. Based on field research in Seine-Saint-Denis, we examine French ‘insertion’ schemes aimed at disadvantaged but potentially job-ready clients, characterized by weak conditionality, low marketization, strong professional autonomy, and local network control. We show that insertion systems have resisted policy attempts to expand workfare-derived principles, reflecting street-level actors’ belief in the key advantages of the former over the latter. In contrast with arguments stressing institutional and cultural stickiness, our explanation for this resistance thus highlights the decentralized network governance of front-line services and the limits to central government power

In this talk we review the evidences for non-spherically symmetric structures around Luminous Hot Stars from polarimetry and what we can learn with this technique.     Characterization and control of phase fluctuations in elongated Bose-Einstein condensates

    Quasi one dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) in elongated traps exhibit significant phase fluctuations even at very low temperatures. We present recent experimental results on the dynamic transformation of phase fluctuations into density modulations during time-of-flight and show the excellent quantitative agreement with the theoretical prediction. In addition we confirm that under our experimental conditions, in the magnetic trap density modulations are strongly suppressed even when the phase fluctuates. The paper also discusses our theoretical results on control of the condensate phase by employing a time-dependent perturbation. Our results set important limitations on future applications of BEC in precision atom interferometry and atom optics, but at the same time suggest pathways to overcome these limitations.Comment: 9 pages, 7 figure

    Advanced flight control system study

    A fly by wire flight control system architecture designed for high reliability includes spare sensor and computer elements to permit safe dispatch with failed elements, thereby reducing unscheduled maintenance. A methodology capable of demonstrating that the architecture does achieve the predicted performance characteristics consists of a hierarchy of activities ranging from analytical calculations of system reliability and formal methods of software verification to iron bird testing followed by flight evaluation. Interfacing this architecture to the Lockheed S-3A aircraft for flight test is discussed. This testbed vehicle can be expanded to support flight experiments in advanced aerodynamics, electromechanical actuators, secondary power systems, flight management, new displays, and air traffic control concepts

    Amide Synthesis by Nickel/Photoredox-Catalyzed Direct Carbamoylation of (Hetero)Aryl Bromides

    Herein, we report a one-electron strategy for catalytic amide synthesis that enables the direct carbamoylation of (hetero)aryl bromides. This radical cross-coupling approach, which is based on the combination of nickel and photoredox catalysis, proceeds at ambient temperature and uses readily available dihydropyridines as precursors of carbamoyl radicals. The method's mild reaction conditions make it tolerant of sensitive-functional-group-containing substrates and allow the installation of an amide scaffold within biologically relevant heterocycles. In addition, we installed amide functionalities bearing electron-poor and sterically hindered amine moieties, which would be difficult to prepare with classical dehydrative condensation methods

    Retrospective real-world pilot data on transcranial pulse stimulation in mild to severe Alzheimer's patients

    Transcranial pulse stimulation (TPS) is a non-invasive neuromodulation therapy that uses short, repetitive shockwaves through a neuro-navigated device. Current research suggests that these pulses lead to a wide range of vascular, metabolic, and neurotrophic changes. This relatively new CE-marked treatment provided first promising results in a clinical pilot study for improving cognition in mild-to-moderate Alzheimer's. Data from other centers is lacking, so here we analyzed safety and pilot real-world short-term results of TPS from the first center in Germany. To gain information about effects in different stages, patients with not only mild but also moderate-to-severe Alzheimer's were analyzed

    Testing the Higgs Mechanism in the Lepton Sector with multi-TeV e+e- Collisions

    Multi-TeV e+e- collisions provide with a large enough sample of Higgs bosons to enable measurements of its suppressed decays. Results of a detailed study of the determination of the muon Yukawa coupling at 3 TeV, based on full detector simulation and event reconstruction, are presented. The muon Yukawa coupling can be determined with a relative accuracy of 0.04 to 0.08 for Higgs bosons masses from 120 GeV to 150 GeV, with an integrated luminosity of 5 inverse-ab.
