    Pilot Study to Evaluate the Appropriate Management of Patients With Coexistent Bacterial Vaginosis and Cervicitis

    A pilot study was performed to obtain preliminary data regarding the need for targeted therapy of bacterial vaginosis (BV) when it accompanies clinically defined cervicitis. Specifically, women attending a sexually transmitted disease (STD) clinic with clinically defined BV and cervicitis were treated in the first phase of the study with doxycycline alone. In phase II, the patients received doxycycline and concomitant intravaginal metronidazole gel. All patients were reexamined 3–4 weeks after therapy. Persistence of BV occurred in 18/19 (95%) of women in phase I vs. 1/7 (14%) of women in phase II (P < 0.001). We concluded that, in women with coexistent clinically defined cervicitis and BV, the treatment of cervicitis does not result in a normalization of the vaginal flora

    A critical appraisal of “Rehabilitation Treatment of Gait in Patients with Parkinson’s Disease with Freezing: A Comparison Between Two Physical Therapy Protocols Using Visual and Auditory Cues with or Without Treadmill Training”

    Freezing gait is a debilitating issue in many people with Parkinson’s disease. While the current methods to manage this issue are helping, this critical analysis wants to look into possible methods to improve the current treatment protocols of freezing gait. This paper analyzes the experimental approach of adding in a treadmill for freezing gait as an unspoken cue to support the visual and auditory cues already given to unfreeze a patient’s gait. This paper uses reliable sources, methods, and results to support their hypothesis of using a treadmill as a possible intervention. However, there are some improvements to be made in order to raise the papers credibility. Despite these issues, I believe this is a sound research approach and paper that could be used to support the idea of using treadmills as a new approach to managing freezing gait

    Spaceborne Lidar in the Study of Marine Systems

    Satellite passive ocean color instruments have provided an unbroken ~20-year record of global ocean plankton properties, but this measurement approach has inherent limitations in terms of spatial-temporal sampling and ability to resolve vertical structure within the water column. These limitations can be addressed by coupling ocean color data with measurements from a spaceborne lidar. Airborne lidars have been used for decades to study ocean subsurface properties, but recent breakthroughs have now demonstrated that plankton properties can be measured with a satellite lidar. The satellite lidar era in oceanography has arrived. Here we present a review of the lidar technique, its applications in marine systems, a prospective on what can be accomplished in the near future with an ocean- and atmosphere-optimized satellite lidar, and a vision for a multi-platform virtual constellation of observational assets enabling a 3-dimensional reconstruction of global ocean ecosystems

    Aβ oligomers peak in early stages of Alzheimer's disease preceding tau pathology

    INTRODUCTION Soluble amyloid beta (Aβ) oligomers have been suggested as initiating Aβ related neuropathologic change in Alzheimer's disease (AD) but their quantitative distribution and chronological sequence within the AD continuum remain unclear. METHODS A total of 526 participants in early clinical stages of AD and controls from a longitudinal cohort were neurobiologically classified for amyloid and tau pathology applying the AT(N) system. Aβ and tau oligomers in the quantified cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) were measured using surface-based fluorescence intensity distribution analysis (sFIDA) technology. RESULTS Across groups, highest Aβ oligomer levels were found in A+ with subjective cognitive decline and mild cognitive impairment. Aβ oligomers were significantly higher in A+T− compared to A−T− and A+T+. APOE ε4 allele carriers showed significantly higher Aβ oligomer levels. No differences in tau oligomers were detected. DISCUSSION The accumulation of Aβ oligomers in the CSF peaks early within the AD continuum, preceding tau pathology. Disease-modifying treatments targeting Aβ oligomers might have the highest therapeutic effect in these disease stages.
