    Control considerations for high frequency, resonant, power processing equipment used in large systems

    Addressed is a class of resonant power processing equipment designed to be used in an integrated high frequency (20 KHz domain), utility power system for large, multi-user spacecraft and other aerospace vehicles. It describes a hardware approach, which has been the basis for parametric and physical data used to justify the selection of high frequency ac as the PMAD baseline for the space station. This paper is part of a larger effort undertaken by NASA and General Dynamics to be sure that all potential space station contractors and other aerospace power system designers understand and can comfortably use this technology, which is now widely used in the commercial sector. In this paper, we will examine control requirements, stability, and operational modes; and their hardware impacts from an integrated system point of view. The current space station PMAD system will provide the overall requirements model to develop an understanding of the performance of this type of system with regard to: (1) regulation; (2) power bus stability and voltage control; (3) source impedance; (4) transient response; (5) power factor effects, and (6) limits and overloads

    Polarization effects in tau production by neutrino

    We studied polarization effects in tau production by neutrino-nucleon scattering. Quasi-elastic scattering, DeltaDelta resonance production and deep inelastic scattering processes are taken into account for the CERN-to-Gran Sasso projects.     Results of a spot-profile-analysis low-energy-electron-diffraction study of the 3Ă—1 order-disorder phase transition of the Ge(113) and Si(113) surfaces are reported.     Topiramate in add-on therapy: Results from an open-label, observational study

    SummaryAn open-label, observational prospective study assessed the effectiveness of topiramate (TPM) as add-on therapy. A total of 450 patients aged 12 and above with a diagnosis of epilepsy and at least one epileptic seizure during the 12-week retrospective baseline were to be documented. After baseline evaluation, topiramate was added. Ninety-five percent of patients had at least one baseline AED, most commonly Carbamazepine (53%) or Valproate (34%). In 5% TPM was started in monotherapy. Topiramate dose titration and target dose was determined by clinical response and side effect profile. Patients were intended to be followed for a total of 1 year which included 6 visits during which seizure frequency, adverse events, weight as well as clinical global impression were recorded. During the 12 weeks retrospective baseline, a median of 2.8 seizures per month were recorded which reduced significantly to 0.7 per month during the complete treatment phase (p<0.0001). Seventy-two percent of patients had a ≥50% seizure reduction. Ten percent of patients were seizure free during the study. The most commonly reported adverse events were difficulties with memory (4.2%), somnolence (3.6%), and dizziness (2.7%). Overall, topiramate was well tolerated, and only 5% of patients discontinued treatment due to an adverse event. Retention in the study was higher than previously reported during randomized, dose controlled studies and is likely due to individualized doses as well as slower titration used

    Reduced kinesthetic perceptions can impair lower back sensorimotor functions and result in increased injury risk. The effect of low back training programs on lumbar spine kinesthetic sensibility is undetermined. There was a back strengthening exercise group (with low back pain; training 4.4 h/wk), a “classical” back training program group (with low back pain; training 4.9 h/wk) and a control group (training 5.4 h/wk). During an active reproduction test, subjects performed trunk positions in random order: flexion [A(0°-20°), B(20°-40°)], lateral flexion [C(0°-30°)], Using a 3D-ultrasound motion analysis system the repositioning error was calculated from the given target position to the subject perceived target position, before and after a 5 week training period. Results show decreased repositioning error after the training for both training groups

    Cordless Global Positioning System (GPS) Applications to Multi-Path (CGAMP) is meeting the challenge of exploiting the L-band signals from the Global Positioning System (GPS) satellites for the measurement of the impulse response of radio transmission channels over space-Earth paths. This approach was originally suggested by E. K. Smith and has been pursued by J. Lemmon, without an affordable implementation being identifiable. In addition to the high cost of a suitable P code correlating GPS receiver, there is also the major impediment of the often announced Department of Defense policy of selective availability/anti-spoof (SA/AS) that clouds reliable access to the wideband (20 MHz) P channel of the GPS signals without cryptographic access. A technique proposed by MacDoran utilizes codeless methods for exploiting the P channel signals implemented by the use of a pair of antennas and cross correlation signal detection

    Tau Polarization in Tau-Neutrino Nucleon Scattering

    We investigate the spin polarization of \tau^{\pm} leptons produced in \nu_{\tau} and \bar{\nu}_{\tau} nucleon scattering via charged currents. Quasi-elastic scattering, \Delta resonance production and deep inelastic scattering processes are studied. The polarization information is essential for measuring the \tau^{\pm} appearance rate in long baseline neutrino oscillation experiments, because the decay particle distributions depend crucially on the \tau^{\pm} spin. In this article, we calculate the spin density matrix of each process and estimate the spin polarization vector in medium and high neutrino energy interactions.     The Validation of the Active Learning in Health Professions Scale

    There is a need for an assessment tool for evaluating the effectiveness of active learning strategies such as problem-based learning in promoting deep learning and clinical reasoning skills within the dual environments of didactic and clinical settings in health professions education. The Active Learning in Health Professions Scale (ALPHS) instrument captures three elements of active learning: activities that have elements of novel access to information, observing or participating in experiences focused on learning, and reflective practices about the learning process. In order to assess the criterion-related validity of the ALHPS, a Structural Regression Model was created in which the latent variable of Active Learning was placed as a predictor of graduating seniors’ critical thinking. The strong psychometric properties of the ALHPS instrument indicate that it is possible to reliably assess students’ perceptions of the frequency with which they experience active learning pedagogy within doctoral health professions education, and that such strategies are predictive directly of academic engagement and indirectly of increases in students’ critical thinking skills
