The influence of self-citation corrections on Egghe's g index
The g index was introduced by Leo Egghe as an improvement of Hirsch's index h
for measuring the overall citation record of a set of articles. It better takes
into account the highly skewed frequency distribution of citations than the h
index. I propose to sharpen this g index by excluding the self-citations. I
have worked out nine practical cases in physics and compare the h and g values
with and without self-citations. As expected, the g index characterizes the
data set better than the h index. The influence of the self-citations appears
to be more significant for the g index than for the h index.Comment: 9 pages, 2 figures, submitted to Scientometric
Measures of galaxy dust and gas mass with Herschel photometry and prospects for ALMA
(Abridged) Combining the deepest Herschel extragalactic surveys (PEP,
GOODS-H, HerMES), and Monte Carlo mock catalogs, we explore the robustness of
dust mass estimates based on modeling of broad band spectral energy
distributions (SEDs) with two popular approaches: Draine & Li (2007, DL07) and
a modified black body (MBB). As long as the observed SED extends to at least
160-200 micron in the rest frame, M(dust) can be recovered with a >3 sigma
significance and without the occurrence of systematics. An average offset of a
factor ~1.5 exists between DL07- and MBB-based dust masses, based on consistent
dust properties. At the depth of the deepest Herschel surveys (in the GOODS-S
field) it is possible to retrieve dust masses with a S/N>=3 for galaxies on the
main sequence of star formation (MS) down to M(stars)~1e10 [M(sun)] up to z~1.
At higher redshift (z<=2) the same result is achieved only for objects at the
tip of the MS or lying above it. Molecular gas masses, obtained converting
M(dust) through the metallicity-dependent gas-to-dust ratio delta(GDR), are
consistent with those based on the scaling of depletion time, and on CO
spectroscopy. Focusing on CO-detected galaxies at z>1, the delta(GDR)
dependence on metallicity is consistent with the local relation. We combine
far-IR Herschel data and sub-mm ALMA expected fluxes to study the advantages of

Dynamical Quasicondensation of Hard-Core Bosons at Finite Momenta
Long-range order in quantum many-body systems is usually associated with
equilibrium situations. Here, we experimentally investigate the
quasicondensation of strongly-interacting bosons at finite momenta in a
far-from-equilibrium case. We prepare an inhomogeneous initial state consisting
of one-dimensional Mott insulators in the center of otherwise empty
one-dimensional chains in an optical lattice with a lattice constant . After
suddenly quenching the trapping potential to zero, we observe the onset of
coherence in spontaneously forming quasicondensates in the lattice. Remarkably,
the emerging phase order differs from the ground-state order and is
characterized by peaks at finite momenta in the

Direct visualization reveals dynamics of a transient intermediate during protein assembly
Interactions between proteins underlie numerous biological functions. Theoretical work suggests that protein interactions initiate with formation of transient intermediates that subsequently relax to specific, stable complexes. However, the nature and roles of these transient intermediates have remained elusive. Here, we characterized the global structure, dynamics, and stability of a transient, on-pathway intermediate during complex assembly between the Signal Recognition Particle (SRP) and its receptor. We show that this intermediate has overlapping but distinct interaction interfaces from that of the final complex, and it is stabilized by long-range electrostatic interactions. A wide distribution of conformations is explored by the intermediate; this distribution becomes more restricted in the final complex and is further regulated by the cargo of SRP. These results suggest a funnel-shaped energy landscape for protein interactions, and they provide a framework for understanding the role of transient intermediates in protein assembly and biological regulation
Ultrasensitive 3He magnetometer for measurements of high magnetic fields
We describe a 3He magnetometer capable to measure high magnetic fields (B >
0.1 Tesla) with a relative accuracy of better than 10^-12. Our approach is
based on the measurement of the free induction decay of gaseous, nuclear spin
polarized 3He following a resonant radio frequency pulse excitation. The
measurement sensitivity can be attributed to the long coherent spin precession
time T2* being of order minutes which is achieved for spherical sample cells in
the regime of motional narrowing where the disturbing influence of field
inhomogeneities is strongly suppressed. The 3He gas is spin polarized in-situ
using a new, non-standard variant of the metastability exchange optical
pumping. We show that miniaturization helps to increase T2* further and that
the measurement sensitivity is not significantly affected by temporal field
fluctuations of order 10^-4.Comment: 27 pages, 7 figure
The substantive and practical significance of citation impact differences between institutions: Guidelines for the analysis of percentiles using effect sizes and confidence intervals
In our chapter we address the statistical analysis of percentiles: How should
the citation impact of institutions be compared? In educational and
psychological testing, percentiles are already used widely as a standard to
evaluate an individual's test scores - intelligence tests for example - by
comparing them with the percentiles of a calibrated sample. Percentiles, or
percentile rank classes, are also a very suitable method for bibliometrics to
normalize citations of publications in terms of the subject category and the
publication year and, unlike the mean-based indicators (the relative citation
rates), percentiles are scarcely affected by skewed distributions of citations.
The percentile of a certain publication provides information about the citation
impact this publication has achieved in comparison to other similar
publications in the same subject category and publication year. Analyses of
percentiles, however, have not always been presented in the most effective and
meaningful way. New APA guidelines (American Psychological Association, 2010)
suggest a lesser emphasis on significance tests and a greater emphasis on the
substantive and practical significance of findings. Drawing on work by Cumming
(2012) we show how examinations of effect sizes (e.g. Cohen's d statistic) and
confidence intervals can lead to a clear understanding of citation impact
differences
The inner environment of Z~CMa: High-Contrast Imaging Polarimetry with NaCo
Context. Z\,CMa is a binary composed of an embedded Herbig Be and an FU Ori
class star separated by au. Observational evidence indicate a complex
environment in which each star has a circumstellar disk and drives a jet, and
the whole system is embedded in a large dusty envelope.
Aims. We aim to probe the circumbinary environment of Z\,CMa in the inner 400
au in scattered light.
Methods. We use high contrast imaging polarimetry with VLT/NaCo at and
bands.
Results. The central binary is resolved in both bands. The polarized images
show three bright and complex structures: a common dust envelope, a sharp
extended feature previously reported in direct light, and an intriguing bright
clump located 0\farcs3 south of the binary, which appears spatially connected
to the sharp extended feature.
Conclusions.We detect orbital motion when compared to previous observations,
and report a new outburst driven by the Herbig star. Our observations reveal
the complex inner environment of Z\,CMa with unprecedented detail and contrast.Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A Letter
Phase diagram for interacting Bose gases
We propose a new form of the inversion method in terms of a selfenergy
expansion to access the phase diagram of the Bose-Einstein transition. The
dependence of the critical temperature on the interaction parameter is
calculated. This is discussed with the help of a new condition for
Bose-Einstein condensation in interacting systems which follows from the pole
of the T-matrix in the same way as from the divergence of the medium-dependent
scattering length. A many-body approximation consisting of screened ladder
diagrams is proposed which describes the Monte Carlo data more appropriately.
The specific results are that a non-selfconsistent T-matrix leads to a linear
coefficient in leading order of 4.7, the screened ladder approximation to 2.3,
and the selfconsistent T-matrix due to the effective mass to a coefficient of
1.3 close to the Monte Carlo data
Monte-Carlo Simulations of the Dynamical Behavior of the Coulomb Glass
We study the dynamical behavior of disordered many-particle systems with
long-range Coulomb interactions by means of damage-spreading simulations. In
this type of Monte-Carlo simulations one investigates the time evolution of the
damage, i.e. the difference of the occupation numbers of two systems, subjected
to the same thermal noise. We analyze the dependence of the damage on
temperature and disorder strength. For zero disorder the spreading transition
coincides with the equilibrium phase transition, whereas for finite disorder,
we find evidence for a dynamical phase transition well below the transition

Modularity measure of networks with overlapping communities
In this paper we introduce a non-fuzzy measure which has been designed to
rank the partitions of a network's nodes into overlapping communities. Such a
measure can be useful for both quantifying clusters detected by various methods
and during finding the overlapping community-structure by optimization methods.
The theoretical problem referring to the separation of overlapping modules is
discussed, and an example for possible applications is given as well
