The influence of self-citation corrections on Egghe's g index

The g index was introduced by Leo Egghe as an improvement of Hirsch's index h for measuring the overall citation record of a set of articles. It better takes into account the highly skewed frequency distribution of citations than the h index. I propose to sharpen this g index by excluding the self-citations. I have worked out nine practical cases in physics and compare the h and g values with and without self-citations. As expected, the g index characterizes the data set better than the h index. The influence of the self-citations appears to be more significant for the g index than for the h index.Comment: 9 pages, 2 figures, submitted to Scientometric

Partitioning Schemes and Non-Integer Box Sizes for the Box-Counting Algorithm in Multifractal Analysis

We compare different partitioning schemes for the box-counting algorithm in the multifractal analysis by computing the singularity spectrum and the distribution of the box probabilities. As model system we use the Anderson model of localization in two and three dimensions. We show that a partitioning scheme which includes unrestricted values of the box size and an average over all box origins leads to smaller error bounds than the standard method using only integer ratios of the linear system size and the box size which was found by Rodriguez et al. (Eur. Phys. J. B 67, 77-82 (2009)) to yield the most reliable results.Comment: 10 pages, 13 figure

Measuring the Higgs Branching Fraction into two Photons at Future Linear \ee Colliders

    Get PDF
We examine the prospects for measuring the \gaga branching fraction of a Standard Model-like Higgs boson with a mass of 120 GeV at the future TESLA linear \ee collider, assuming an integrated luminosity of 1 ab−1^{-1} and center-of-mass energies of 350 GeV and 500 GeV. The Higgs boson is produced in association with a fermion pair via the Higgsstrahlung process \ee →ZH\to ZH, with Z→Z \to \qq or \nn, or the WW fusion reaction e+e−→ΜeÎœeˉHe^+e^- \to \nu_e \bar{\nu_e} H. A relative uncertainty on BF(\hgg) of~16% can be achieved in unpolarized \ee collisions at s\sqrt{s}=~500 GeV, while for s\sqrt{s}=~350 GeV the expected precision is slightly poorer. With appropriate initial state polarizations Δ\DeltaBF(\hgg)/BF(\hgg) can be improved to 10%. If this measurement is combined with the expected error for the total Higgs width, a precision of 10% on the \gaga Higgs boson partial width appears feasible.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figure

Multifractal analysis of the metal-insulator transition in anisotropic systems

We study the Anderson model of localization with anisotropic hopping in three dimensions for weakly coupled chains and weakly coupled planes. The eigenstates of the Hamiltonian, as computed by Lanczos diagonalization for systems of sizes up to 48348^3, show multifractal behavior at the metal-insulator transition even for strong anisotropy. The critical disorder strength WcW_c determined from the system size dependence of the singularity spectra is in a reasonable agreement with a recent study using transfer matrix methods. But the respective spectrum at WcW_c deviates from the ``characteristic spectrum'' determined for the isotropic system. This indicates a quantitative difference of the multifractal properties of states of the anisotropic as compared to the isotropic system. Further, we calculate the Kubo conductivity for given anisotropies by exact diagonalization. Already for small system sizes of only 12312^3 sites we observe a rapidly decreasing conductivity in the directions with reduced hopping if the coupling becomes weaker.Comment: 25 RevTeX pages with 10 PS-figures include

On the Nature of X-ray Variability in Ark 564

We use data from a recent long ASCA observation of the Narrow Line Seyfert 1 Ark 564 to investigate in detail its timing properties. We show that a thorough analysis of the time series, employing techniques not generally applied to AGN light curves, can provide useful information to characterize the engines of these powerful sources. We searched for signs of non-stationarity in the data, but did not find strong evidences for it. We find that the process causing the variability is very likely nonlinear, suggesting that variability models based on many active regions, as the shot noise model, may not be applicable to Ark 564. The complex light curve can be viewed, for a limited range of time scales, as a fractal object with non-trivial fractal dimension and statistical self-similarity. Finally, using a nonlinear statistic based on the scaling index as a tool to discriminate time series, we demonstrate that the high and low count rate states, which are indistinguishable on the basis of their autocorrelation, structure and probability density functions, are intrinsically different, with the high state characterized by higher complexity.Comment: 13 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in A&

Distribution of fractal dimensions at the Anderson transition

We investigated numerically the distribution of participation numbers in the 3d Anderson tight-binding model at the localization-delocalization threshold. These numbers in {\em one} disordered system experience strong level-to-level fluctuations in a wide energy range. The fluctuations grow substantially with increasing size of the system. We argue that the fluctuations of the correlation dimension, D2D_2 of the wave functions are the main reason for this. The distribution of these correlation dimensions at the transition is calculated. In the thermodynamic limit (L→∞L\to \infty) it does not depend on the system size LL. An interesting feature of this limiting distribution is that it vanishes exactly at D2max=1.83D_{\rm 2max}=1.83, the highest possible value of the correlation dimension at the Anderson threshold in this model
