    Permutation Games for the Weakly Aconjunctive Ό\mu-Calculus

    Full text link
    We introduce a natural notion of limit-deterministic parity automata and present a method that uses such automata to construct satisfiability games for the weakly aconjunctive fragment of the Ό\mu-calculus. To this end we devise a method that determinizes limit-deterministic parity automata of size nn with kk priorities through limit-deterministic B\"uchi automata to deterministic parity automata of size O((nk)!)\mathcal{O}((nk)!) and with O(nk)\mathcal{O}(nk) priorities. The construction relies on limit-determinism to avoid the full complexity of the Safra/Piterman-construction by using partial permutations of states in place of Safra-Trees. By showing that limit-deterministic parity automata can be used to recognize unsuccessful branches in pre-tableaux for the weakly aconjunctive Ό\mu-calculus, we obtain satisfiability games of size O((nk)!)\mathcal{O}((nk)!) with O(nk)\mathcal{O}(nk) priorities for weakly aconjunctive input formulas of size nn and alternation-depth kk. A prototypical implementation that employs a tableau-based global caching algorithm to solve these games on-the-fly shows promising initial results

    Consumers’ Trade-Off Between Relationship, Service Package, And Price: An Empirical Study In The Car Industry

    The prime objective of our study is to assess whether consumer segments based on relational aspects, service aspects, or price aspects have different preferences concerning these three key decision making variables when buying a car. In addition, we assessed consumer segments resulting from simultaneously incorporating relationships, service package, and price. We investigated a large sample of Mitsubishi drivers in the Netherlands emphasizing consumers’ trade-off between dealer relationship, service package and price. Conjoint analysis showed that dealer relationships (as opposed to price) represent a very important decision making variable when buying a car and consumer preferences concerning relationships provide a useful instrument for segmenting markets. Cluster analyses on the basis of three aspects simultaneously revealed that some consumers do value relationships, while others emphasize the service package in their purchase, both opposed to the third segment that is most probably not inclined to be loyal to a car dealer at all.Our study clearly indicates that different consumer segments can be distinguished on the basis of preferences for relationships and service packages rather than on the basis of price. This knowledge enables car dealers to use their resources more effectively.marketing ;

    Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy in cancer patients : a four-arm randomized trial on the effectiveness of electroacupuncture

    Purpose. Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is a common and dose-limiting side effect of cytostatic drugs. Since there are no proven therapeutic procedures against CIPN, we were interested to define the role of electroacupuncture (EA) from which preliminary data showed promising results. Methods. In a randomized trial with a group sequential adaptive design in patients with CIPN, we compared EA (LV3, SP9, GB41, GB34, LI4, LI11, SI3, and HT3; n=14) with hydroelectric baths (HB, n=14), vitamin B1/B6 capsules (300/300 mg daily; VitB, n=15), and placebo capsules (n=17). The statistical power in this trial was primarily calculated for proving EA only, so results of HB and VitB are pilot data. Results. CIPN complaints improved by 0.8 +- 1.2 (EA), 1.7 +- 1.7 (HB), 1.6 +- 2.0 (VitB), and 1.3 +- 1.3 points (placebo) on a 10-point numeric rating scale without significant difference between treatment groups or placebo. In addition no significant differences in sensory nerve conduction studies or quality of life (EORTC QLQ-C30) were found. Conclusions. The used EA concept, HB, and VitB were not superior to placebo. Since, contrary to our results, studies with different acupuncture concepts showed a positive effect on CIPN, the effect of acupuncture on CIPN remains unclear. Further randomized, placebo controlled studies seem necessary. This trial is registered with DRKS00004448

    GTP-dependent Ca2+ release from rat liver microsomes Vesicle fusion is not required

    AbstractThe GTP-dependent calcium release from rat liver microsomes is known to be promoted in the presence of colloids like polyethyleneglycol (PEG), polyvinylpyrrolidine, or albumin. Dawson et al. [(1987) Biochem. J. 244, 87–92] using the ‘fusogen’ PEG have concluded that both GTP-induced calcium efflux and the enhancement of InsP3-promoted calcium release in the presence of GTP could be attributed to a GTP-dependent vesicle fusion. Here, using the more physiological colloid albumin we report that GTP-induced calcium release from rat liver microsomes may not be linked to vesicle fusion

    Habitat suitability models for the conservation of thermophilic grasshoppers and bush crickets—simple or complex?

    One goal of conservation biology is the assessment of effects of land use change on species distribution. One approach for identifying the factors, which determine habitat suitability for a species are statistical habitat distribution models. These models are quantitative and can be used for predictions in management scenarios. However, they often have one major shortcoming, which is their complexity. This means that they need several, often costly-to-determine parameters for predictions of species occurrence. We first used habitat suitability models to investigate and determine habitat preferences of three different Orthoptera species. Second, we compared the predictive powers of simple habitat suitability models considering only the ‘habitat type' as predictor with more complex models taking different habitat factors into account. We found that the habitat type is the most reliable and robust factor, which determines the occurrence of the species studied. Thus, analyses of habitat suitability can easily be carried out on the basis of existing vegetation maps for the conservation of the three species under study. Our results can serve as a basis for the estimation of spatio-temporal distribution and survival probabilities of the species studied and might also be valuable for other species living in dry grassland
