    A Predictive Analytics Approach to Building a Decision Support System for Improving Graduation Rates at a Four-Year College

    Although graduation rates have interested stakeholders, educational researchers, and policymakers for some time, little progress has been made on the overall graduation rate at four-year state colleges. Even though selective admission based on academic indicators such as high school GPA and ACT/ SAT have widely been used in the USA for years, and recent statistics show that less than 40% of students graduate from four-year state colleges in four years in the US. The authors propose using an ensemble of analytic models that considers cost as a better form of analysis that can be used as input to decision support systems to inform decision makers and help them choose intervention methods. This article uses ten years of data for 10,000 students and applies ten analytical models to find the best predictor of at-risk students. This research also uses the receiver operating characteristic curve to help determine the most cost-effective trade-off between false positive and false negative levels

    Choosing to Serve? An Exploration of Student Self-Selection of Service Learning Projects

    This study explores student selection of service learning projects in lieu of traditional library research projects. One hundred fifty-four strategic management students completed surveys exploring their tolerance of ambiguity, time pressure, attitudes toward civic participation, self-efficacy toward service, political conservatism, and the role business school’s should play in civic education. The study examined their responses to survey questions in light of their project selection. The study identified factors important for faculty in designing and developing service learning projects as well as key areas for future research

    Hubble Space Telescope Spectroscopy of Brown Dwarfs Discovered with the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer

    We present a sample of brown dwarfs identified with the {\it Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer} (WISE) for which we have obtained {\it Hubble Space Telescope} ({\it HST}) Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) near-infrared grism spectroscopy. The sample (twenty-two in total) was observed with the G141 grism covering 1.10−-1.70 μ\mum, while fifteen were also observed with the G102 grism, which covers 0.90−-1.10 μ\mum. The additional wavelength coverage provided by the G102 grism allows us to 1) search for spectroscopic features predicted to emerge at low effective temperatures (e.g.\ ammonia bands) and 2) construct a smooth spectral sequence across the T/Y boundary. We find no evidence of absorption due to ammonia in the G102 spectra. Six of these brown dwarfs are new discoveries, three of which are found to have spectral types of T8 or T9. The remaining three, WISE J082507.35++280548.5 (Y0.5), WISE J120604.38++840110.6 (Y0), and WISE J235402.77++024015.0 (Y1) are the nineteenth, twentieth, and twenty-first spectroscopically confirmed Y dwarfs to date. We also present {\it HST} grism spectroscopy and reevaluate the spectral types of five brown dwarfs for which spectral types have been determined previously using other instruments.Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal. 20 pages, 18 figures, 7 table

    Targeting and Readout Strategies for Fast Optical Neural Control In Vitro and In Vivo

    Major obstacles faced by neuroscientists in attempting to unravel the complexity of brain function include both the heterogeneity of brain tissue (with a multitude of cell types present in vivo) and the high speed of brain information processing (with behaviorally relevant millisecond-scale electrical activity patterns). To address different aspects of these technical constraints, genetically targetable neural modulation tools have been developed by a number of groups (Zemelman et al., 2002; Banghart et al., 2004; Karpova et al., 2005; Lima and Miesenbock, 2005; Thompson et al., 2005; Chambers et al., 2006; Tan et al., 2006; Gorostiza et al., 2007; Lerchner et al., 2007; Szobota et al., 2007). One approach recently brought to neurobiology, combining both high speed and genetic targeting, is based on a family of fast light-responsive microbial opsins including halorhodopsins (e.g., NpHR) and channelrhodopsins (e.g., ChR2) (for review, see Zhang et al., 2007b). These microbial opsins are single-component transmembrane conductance regulators encompassing light sensitivity and fast membrane potential control within a single open reading frame, which can be used to achieve fast bidirectional control of specific cell types even in freely moving animals (Adamantidis et al., 2007; Zhang et al., 2007a). Although the basic functioning of these tools has been reviewed previously (Zhang et al., 2007b), here we describe a collection of targeting and readout strategies designed for rapid and flexible application of the microbial opsin system, and provide pointers to the relevant literature. Combinations of these multiple levels of targeting and readout define an evolving toolbox that may open up new possibilities for basic neuroscience investigation

    High-resolution Near-Infrared Images and Models of the Circumstellar Disk in HH 30

    We present Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Near-Infrared Camera and Multi-object Spectrometer (NICMOS) observations of the reflection nebulosity associated with the T Tauri star HH 30. The images show the scattered light pattern characteristic of a highly inclined, optically thick disk with a prominent dustlane whose width decreases with increasing wavelength. The reflected nebulosity exhibits a lateral asymmetry in the upper lobe on the opposite side to that reported in previously published Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2) images. The radiation transfer model which most closely reproduces the data has a flared accretion disk with dust grains larger than standard interstellar medium grains by a factor of approximately 2.1. A single hotspot on the stellar surface provides the necessary asymmetry to fit the images and is consistent with previous modeling of the light curve and images. Photometric analysis results in an estimated extinction of Av>~80; however, since the photometry measures only scattered light rather than direct stellar flux, this a lower limit. The radiative transfer models require an extinction of Av = 7,900.Comment: Accepted for publication in Ap.

    Dipole-phonon quantum logic with alkaline-earth monoxide and monosulfide cations

    Dipole-phonon quantum logic (DPQL) leverages the interaction between polar molecular ions and the motional modes of a trapped-ion Coulomb crystal to provide a potentially scalable route to quantum information science. Here, we study a class of candidate molecular ions for DPQL, the cationic alkaline-earth monoxides and monosulfides, which possess suitable structure for DPQL and can be produced in existing atomic ion experiments with little additional complexity. We present calculations of DPQL operations for one of these molecules, CaO+^+, and discuss progress towards experimental realization. We also further develop the theory of DPQL to include state preparation and measurement and entanglement of multiple molecular ions.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figure

    P.O. 5-3-0194This manual presents example studies and reports which implement the philosophy that the total stream crossing including the approach fills in the flood plains and all necessary waterway openings should be designed and constructed for the least total expected cost to the public. The total expected cost includes the capital investment in the highway, expected replacement and repair costs as a result of flood damages, expected user costs from traffic interruption and detour, and expected backwater drainages during the service life of the highway. Techniques for making engineering and economic studies for the least cost designs are presented along with suggestions for managing the time and work required for such studies. A unique design flood is defined for each bridge as the flood whose upstream stage is equal to the lowest elevation of the approach fill or bridge deck. Two example reports were prepared to illustrate the application of the method to a rural site (low backwater damage) and an urban site (high potential traffic interruption and backwater damage)
