Code wars: steganography, signals intelligence, and terrorism

    Get PDF
This paper describes and discusses the process of secret communication known as steganography. The argument advanced here is that terrorists are unlikely to be employing digital steganography to facilitate secret intra-group communication as has been claimed. This is because terrorist use of digital steganography is both technically and operationally implausible. The position adopted in this paper is that terrorists are likely to employ low-tech steganography such as semagrams and null ciphers instead

    Transient growth in Taylor-Couette flow

    Get PDF
Transient growth due to non-normality is investigated for the Taylor-Couette problem with counter-rotating cylinders as a function of aspect ratio eta and Reynolds number Re. For all Re < 500, transient growth is enhanced by curvature, i.e. is greater for eta < 1 than for eta = 1, the plane Couette limit. For fixed Re < 130 it is found that the greatest transient growth is achieved for eta between the Taylor-Couette linear stability boundary, if it exists, and one, while for Re > 130 the greatest transient growth is achieved for eta on the linear stability boundary. Transient growth is shown to be approximately 20% higher near the linear stability boundary at Re = 310, eta = 0.986 than at Re = 310, eta = 1, near the threshold observed for transition in plane Couette flow. The energy in the optimal inputs is primarily meridional; that in the optimal outputs is primarily azimuthal. Pseudospectra are calculated for two contrasting cases. For large curvature, eta = 0.5, the pseudospectra adhere more closely to the spectrum than in a narrow gap case, eta = 0.99

A contracting circumbinary molecular ring with an inner cavity of about 140 AU around Ori 139-409

Sensitive and subarcsecond resolution (∌\sim 0.7\arcsec) CH3_3OH(7−2,6_{-2,6} →\to 6−2,5_{-2,5}) line and 890 ÎŒ\mum continuum observations made with the Submillimeter Array (SMA) towards the hot molecular circumbinary ring associated with the young multiple star Ori 139-409 are presented. The CH3_3OH(7−2,6_{-2,6} - 6−2,5_{-2,5}) emission from the ring is well resolved at this angular resolution revealing an inner cavity with a size of about 140 AU. A LTE model of a Keplerian disk with an inner cavity of the same size confirms the presence of this cavity. Additionally, this model suggests that the circumbinary ring is contracting with a velocity of Vinf_{inf} ∌\sim 1.5 km s−1^{-1} toward the binary central compact circumstellar disks reported at a wavelength of 7 mm. {\bf The inner central cavity seems to be formed by the tidal effects of the young stars in the middle of the ring.} The ring appears to be not a stationary object. Furthermore, the infall velocity we determine is about a factor of 3 slower than the free-fall velocity corresponding to the dynamical mass. This would correspond to a mass accretion rate of about 10−5^{-5} M⊙_\odot/yr. We found that the dust emission associated with Ori 139-409 appears to be arising from the circumstellar disks with no strong contribution from the molecular gas ring. A simple comparison with other classical molecular dusty rings (e.g. GG Tau, UZ Tau, and UY Aur) suggests that Ori 139-409 could be one of the youngest circumbinary rings reported up to date. Finally, our results confirm that the circumbinary rings are actively funneling fresh gas material to the central compact binary circumstellar disks, i.e. to the protostars in the very early phases of their evolution.Comment: Accepted by MNRA

Breast cancer; CancerCĂ ncer de mama; CĂ ncerCĂĄncer de mama; CĂĄncerThe METRIC study (NCT#0199733) explored a novel antibody–drug conjugate, glembatumumab vedotin (GV), targeting gpNMB that is overexpressed in ~40% of patients with triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) and associated with poor prognosis. The study was a randomized, open-label, phase 2b study that evaluated progression-free survival (PFS) of GV compared with capecitabine in gpNMB-overexpressing TNBC. Patients who had previously received anthracycline and taxane-based therapy were randomized 2:1 to receive, GV (1.88 mg/kg IV q21 days) or capecitabine (2500 mg/m2 PO daily d1–14 q21 days). The primary endpoint was RECIST 1.1 PFS per independent, blinded central review. In all, 327 patients were randomized to GV (213 treated) or capecitabine (92 treated). Median PFS was 2.9 months for GV vs. 2.8 months for capecitabine. The most common grade ≄3 toxicities for GV were neutropenia, rash, and leukopenia, and for capecitabine were fatigue, diarrhea, and palmar-plantar erythrodysesthesia. The study did not meet the primary endpoint of improved PFS over capecitabine or demonstrate a relative risk/benefit improvement over capecitabine.Funding provided by Celldex Therapeutics, Inc

Canopy nitrogen, carbon assimilation, and albedo in temperate and boreal forests: Functional relations and potential climate feedbacks

The availability of nitrogen represents a key constraint on carbon cycling in terrestrial ecosystems, and it is largely in this capacity that the role of N in the Earth\u27s climate system has been considered. Despite this, few studies have included continuous variation in plant N status as a driver of broad-scale carbon cycle analyses. This is partly because of uncertainties in how leaf-level physiological relationships scale to whole ecosystems and because methods for regional to continental detection of plant N concentrations have yet to be developed. Here, we show that ecosystem CO2 uptake capacity in temperate and boreal forests scales directly with whole-canopy N concentrations, mirroring a leaf-level trend that has been observed for woody plants worldwide. We further show that both CO2 uptake capacity and canopy N concentration are strongly and positively correlated with shortwave surface albedo. These results suggest that N plays an additional, and overlooked, role in the climate system via its influence on vegetation reflectivity and shortwave surface energy exchange. We also demonstrate that much of the spatial variation in canopy N can be detected by using broad-band satellite sensors, offering a means through which these findings can be applied toward improved application of coupled carbon cycle–climate models

Synthesis of trace element bearing single crystals of Chlor-Apatite (Ca5(PO4)3Cl) using the flux growth method

We present a new strategy on how to synthesize trace-element bearing (REE, Sr) chlorapatites Ca5(PO4)3Cl using the flux growth method. Synthetic apatites were up to several mm long, light blue in colour. The apatites were characterized using XRD, electron microprobe and laser ablation ICP-MS (LA-ICPMS) techniques and contained several hundred ÎŒg/g La, Ce, Pr, Sm, Gd and Lu and about 1700 ÎŒg/g Sr. The analyses indicate that apatites were homogenous (within the uncertainties) for major and trace elements

Collapse of the vortex-lattice inductance and shear modulus at the melting transition in untwinned YBa2Cu3O7\rm YBa_2Cu_3O_7

The complex resistivity ρ^(ω)\hat{\rho}(\omega) of the vortex lattice in an untwinned crystal of 93-K YBa2Cu3O7\rm YBa_2Cu_3O_7 has been measured at frequencies ω/2π\omega/2\pi from 100 kHz to 20 MHz in a 2-Tesla field H∄c\bf H\parallel c, using a 4-probe RF transmission technique that enables continuous measurements versus ω\omega and temperature TT. As TT is increased, the inductance Ls(ω)=Imρ^(ω)/ω{\cal L}_s(\omega) ={\rm Im} \hat{\rho}(\omega)/ \omega increases steeply to a cusp at the melting temperature TmT_m, and then undergoes a steep collapse consistent with vanishing of the shear modulus c66c_{66}. We discuss in detail the separation of the vortex-lattice inductance from the `volume' inductance, and other skin-depth effects. To analyze the spectra, we consider a weakly disordered lattice with a low pin density. Close fits are obtained to ρ1(ω)\rho_1(\omega) over 2 decades in ω\omega. Values of the pinning parameter Îș\kappa and shear modulus c66c_{66} obtained show that c66c_{66} collapses by over 4 decades at TmT_m, whereas Îș\kappa remains finite.Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, Phys.
