Nuclear spin state narrowing via gate--controlled Rabi oscillations in a double quantum dot
We study spin dynamics for two electrons confined to a double quantum dot
under the influence of an oscillating exchange interaction. This leads to
driven Rabi oscillations between the --state and the
--state of the two--electron system. The width of the
Rabi resonance is proportional to the amplitude of the oscillating exchange. A
measurement of the Rabi resonance allows one to narrow the distribution of
nuclear spin states and thereby to prolong the spin decoherence time. Further,
we study decoherence of the two-electron states due to the hyperfine
interaction and give requirements on the parameters of the system in order to
initialize in the --state and to perform a
operation with unit fidelity.Comment: v1:9 pages, 1 figure; v2: 13 pages, 2 figures, added section on

Dynamical control of electron spin coherence in a quantum dot
We investigate the performance of dynamical decoupling methods at suppressing
electron spin decoherence from a low-temperature nuclear spin reservoir in a
quantum dot. The controlled dynamics is studied through exact numerical
simulation, with emphasis on realistic pulse delays and long-time limit. Our
results show that optimal performance for this system is attained by a periodic
protocol exploiting concatenated design, with control rates substantially
slower than expected from the upper spectral cutoff of the bath. For a known
initial electron spin state, coherence can saturate at long times, signaling
the creation of a stable ``spin-locked'' decoherence-free subspace. Analytical
insight on saturation is obtained for a simple echo protocol, in good agreement
with numerical results.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures with 3 of them in colo
Examining how teachers use graphs to teach mathematics during a professional development program
There are urgent calls for more studies examining the impact of Professional Development (PD) programs on teachers’ instructional practices. In this study, we analyzed how grades 5-9 mathematics teachers used graphs to teach mathematics at the start and end of a PD program. This topic is relevant because while many studies have investigated students’ difficulties with graphs, there is limited research on how teachers use graphs in their classrooms and no research on how PD impacts the way teachers use graphs in class to teach mathematics. Participant teachers took three graduate level semester-long courses focused on mathematics and student mathematical thinking. The program provided teachers with multiple opportunities for exploration and discussion, systematic feedback, contexts for collaboration and
collegial sharing, and extended follow-up support. We analyzed all lessons where teachers used graphs in class at the start and end of the program, finding that teachers’ use of graphs was qualitatively more sophisticated in the end lessons. Results suggest that the features of the PD program had a positive effect on teachers’ classroom practices regarding the use of graphs
Energy spectrum and Landau levels in bilayer graphene with spin-orbit interaction
We present a theoretical study of the bandstructure and Landau levels in
bilayer graphene at low energies in the presence of a transverse magnetic field
and Rashba spin-orbit interaction in the regime of negligible trigonal
distortion. Within an effective low energy approach (L\"owdin partitioning
theory) we derive an effective Hamiltonian for bilayer graphene that
incorporates the influence of the Zeeman effect, the Rashba spin-orbit
interaction, and inclusively, the role of the intrinsic spin-orbit interaction
on the same footing. Particular attention is spent to the energy spectrum and
Landau levels. Our modeling unveil the strong influence of the Rashba coupling
in the spin-splitting of the electron and hole bands. Graphene
bilayers with weak Rashba spin-orbit interaction show a spin-splitting linear
in momentum and proportional to , but scales inversely proportional
to the interlayer hopping energy . However, at robust spin-orbit
coupling the energy spectrum shows a strong warping behavior near
the Dirac points. We find the bias-induced gap in bilayer graphene to be
decreasing with increasing Rashba coupling, a behavior resembling a topological
insulator transition. We further predict an unexpected assymetric
spin-splitting and crossings of the Landau levels due to the interplay between
the Rashba interaction and the external bias voltage. Our results are of
relevance for interpreting magnetotransport and infrared cyclotron resonance
measurements, including also situations of comparatively weak spin-orbit
coupling.Comment: 25 pages, 5 figure
Dissipation effects in spin-Hall transport of electrons and holes
We investigate the spin-Hall effect of both electrons and holes in
semiconductors using the Kubo formula in the correct zero-frequency limit
taking into account the finite momentum relaxation time of carriers in real
semiconductors. This approach allows to analyze the range of validity of recent
theoretical findings. In particular, the spin-Hall conductivity vanishes for
vanishing spin-orbit coupling if the correct zero-frequency limit is performed.Comment: 5 pages, no figures, version to appear in Phys. Rev.
Revivals of quantum wave-packets in graphene
We investigate the propagation of wave-packets on graphene in a perpendicular
magnetic field and the appearance of collapses and revivals in the
time-evolution of an initially localised wave-packet. The wave-packet evolution
in graphene differs drastically from the one in an electron gas and shows a
rich revival structure similar to the dynamics of highly excited Rydberg
states.
We present a novel numerical wave-packet propagation scheme in order to solve
the effective single-particle Dirac-Hamiltonian of graphene and show how the
collapse and revival dynamics is affected by the presence of disorder. Our
effective numerical method is of general interest for the solution of the Dirac
equation in the presence of potentials and magnetic fields.Comment: 22 pages, 10 figures, 3 movies, to appear in New Journal of Physic
Spin susceptibilities, spin densities and their connection to spin-currents
We calculate the frequency dependent spin susceptibilities for a
two-dimensional electron gas with both Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit
interaction. The resonances of the susceptibilities depends on the relative
values of the Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit constants, which could be
manipulated by gate voltages. We derive exact continuity equations, with source
terms, for the spin density and use those to connect the spin current to the
spin density. In the free electron model the susceptibilities play a central
role in the spin dynamics since both the spin density and the spin current are
proportional to them.Comment: 6 pages, revtex4 styl
Magnetic susceptibilities of diluted magnetic semiconductors and anomalous Hall-voltage noise
The carrier spin and impurity spin densities in diluted magnetic
semiconductors are considered using a semiclassical approach. Equations of
motions for the spin densities and the carrier spin current density in the
paramagnetic phase are derived, exhibiting their coupled diffusive dynamics.
The dynamical spin susceptibilities are obtained from these equations. The
theory holds for p-type and n-type semiconductors doped with magnetic ions of
arbitrary spin quantum number. Spin-orbit coupling in the valence band is shown
to lead to anisotropic spin diffusion and to a suppression of the Curie
temperature in p-type materials. As an application we derive the Hall-voltage
noise in the paramagnetic phase. This quantity is critically enhanced close to
the Curie temperature due to the contribution from the anomalous Hall effect.Comment: 18 pages, 1 figure include
