Extracting Additional Information From Biotic Index Samples

    Get PDF
Macroinvertebrates were collected from a small midwestern stream over a 3-year period as part of a non-point source pollution study. Temporal and spatial variability in standard biotic index values (BIs) were computed and compared with variability expressed by a series of additional community measurements, including the mean tolerance value of all taxa present in a sample, irrespective of the numerical abundance of individual taxa. The mean tolerance value exhibited lower spatial and temporal variability than the standard BI; therefore, mean tolerance values may be useful in estimating a stream\u27s long-term ambient water quality and its recovery potential. Computations of additional BI metrics are easily accomplished with no additional lab work required, and comparisons of mean tolerance values with standard BIs should aid investigators in interpreting changes in water quality

Development and evaluation of a single pass, dual stream corn stover harvester

A grain combine was modified to allow single pass corn grain and stover harvesting. The harvester is capable of simultaneously delivering clean corn grain to an onboard storage tank and chopped corn stover to a transport or compaction device via a blower. A new residue chopper was developed to replace the conventional flail chopper available on the combine. The new chopper relies on shear cutting in two perpendicular planes to reduce the size of all stover particles to 51 mm or less. Testing of the machine was conducted using two headers (conventional corn head, modified row crop head), two choppers (conventional flail chopper, prototype double shear chopper), two blower configurations (with blower, without blower), and three ground speeds. The modified row crop head can harvest the majority of the above ground corn plant material and harvests two to three times as much stover as a conventional corn head. The prototype double shear chopper requires 12 kW less power than the flail chopper and uniformly sizes the stalks and cobs. The head type does not significantly affect the chopper or blower power

Econometric Modeling and Analysis of Residential Water Demand Based on Unbalanced Panel Data

This paper develops an econometric methodology devised to analyze a sample of time unbalanced panel data on residential water consumption in the French island La Reunion with the purpose to bring out the main determinants of household water consumption and estimate the importance of water consumption by uses. For this purpose, we specify a daily panel econometric model and derive, by performing a time aggregation, a general linear regression model accounting for water consumption data recorded on periods of any calendar date and time length. To esti-mate efficiently the parameters of this model we develop a feasible two step generalized least square method. Using the principle of best linear unbiased prediction, we finally develop an approach allowing to consistently break down the volume of water consumption recorded on household water bills by uses, namely by enforcing this estimated decomposition to add up to the observed total. The application of this methodology to a sample of 437 unbalanced panel observations shows the scope of this approach for the empirical analysis of actual data.econometric modeling; water consumption; panel data

Visualizing Success: Transforming Disparate Data into a Dashboard that Tells a Story

    Get PDF
In 2018, SJSU Library completed a project to revamp our public dashboard, incorporating data visualization best practices using Tableau. This session will focus on the step-by-step process of implementing this project, from the first stages to a successful debut. After some preliminary research, we began by creating a prototype and gathering feedback from stakeholders. Next we cleaned and extracted our data from Alma Analytics and other sources. We’ll talk about how we got our data into Tableau, including the pros and cons of using the Web Data Connector. Next we created our visualizations in Tableau. We’ll explain why we chose the chart types we did, as well as some tricks to improve the quality and consistency of the vizzes. Lastly, and with the help of our Web Team, we set up a test server to check our final layout and functionality. We’ll also discuss how we managed our timeline and strategies for successful feedback with stakeholders

Courbet par Clark : visions politiques et visées polémiques d’une monographie

Le rôle joué par la monographie de Timothy J. Clark(Image of the People, Gustave Courbet and the 1848 revolution, Londres, 1973 ; trad. fr.

Primary Care Physicians’ Participation, Knowledge, and Views of Nutrition Counseling for Weight Management

AbstractAn estimated 70% of the United States population is considered overweight or obese, which has led to an epidemic. Primary care physicians (PCPs) are considered the first line of defense to help fight obesity through weight management by providing nutrition care to patients. With little known about how PCPs engage with their patients on nutrition care combined with changing guidelines on treating obese patients, there is a gap in research on how PCPs help patients with weight management and what tools PCPs use to accomplish this. Guided by the health promotion model, the purpose of this qualitative study was to understand how physicians work with patients to address weight management through nutrition care. Sixteen physicians from the Midwestern United States were interviewed about their knowledge of nutrition and recent dietary guidelines as well as how they participate with patients on nutrition care for weight management. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings suggested that most PCPs are working with patients on nutrition care with various methods and gaining knowledge of nutrition from a variety of sources. Implications for social change include helping provide insight into tools physicians use to help patients manage their weight, which can translate to helping the general population become healthier through nutrition and weight management

    Hans Hartung, an Archival Life

    Get PDF
In the 20th and 21st centuries, we are well aware how many artists collect, conserve and compile archives (be they personal or exogenous), then, rather than confining them to the status of historical documentation, incorporate them in their work. The case of the Franco-German painter Hans Hartung is not unrelated to this kind of approach, but in a manner which is, paradoxically, both more empirical and more structured. Very empirical on the one hand, because Hartung never completely predicts ..
