    Changing the culture of care for children and adolescents with functional neurological disorder.

    As members of a multidisciplinary team of professionals who treat children and adolescents with functional neurological (conversion) disorder (FND), we highlight the pressing need to develop an FND-informed culture of care that takes into account recent advances in our understanding of this group of patients. Stories of clinical encounters in health care settings from around the world-told by children and adolescents with FND, their parents, and health professionals-portray an outdated culture of care characterized by iatrogenic stigma, erosion of empathy and compassion within the clinician-patient relationship, and a lack of understanding of FND and its complex neurobiology. After a brief exploration of the outdated culture, we share our counterstories: how we and our colleagues have worked, and continue to work, to create an FND-informed culture in the health systems where we practice. We discuss the therapeutic use of child-friendly language. We also discuss a range of structural, educational, and process interventions that can be used to promote FND-informed beliefs and attitudes, FND-informed clinician-patient encounters, and FND-informed referral processes, treatment pathways, and therapeutic interventions

    Eocene to Miocene Magnetostratigraphy, Biostratigraphy, and Chemostratigraphy at ODP Site 1090 (Sub-Antarctic South Atlantic)

    At Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Site 1090 (lat 42854.89S, long 8854.09E) locatedin a water depth of 3702 m on the Agulhas Ridge in the sub-Antarctic South Atlantic, ~300 m of middle Eocene to middle Miocenesediments were recovered with the advancedpiston corer (APC) and the extendedcore barrel (XCB). U-channel samplesfrom the 70–230 meters composite depth(mcd) interval provide a magnetic polaritystratigraphy that is extended to 380 mcd byshipboard whole-core and discrete sampledata. The magnetostratigraphy can be interpretedby the fit of the polarity-zone patternto the geomagnetic polarity time scale(GPTS) augmented by isotope data andbioevents with documented correlation tothe GPTS. Three normal-polarity subchrons(C5Dr.1n, C7Ar.1n, and C13r.1n),not included in the standard GPTS, are recordedat Site 1090. The base of the sampledsection is correlated to C19n (middleEocene), although the interpretation is unclearbeyond C17r. The top of the sampledsection is correlated to C5Cn (late earlyMiocene), although, in the uppermost 10 m of the sampled section, a foraminifer (Globorotaliasphericomiozea) usually associatedwith the Messinian and early Pliocene hasbeen identified. 87Sr/86Sr, d13C, and d18Ovalues measured on foraminifera, includingthe d18O and d13C shifts close to the Eocene/Oligocene boundary, support the correlationto the GPTS. For the interval spanningthe Oligocene/Miocene boundary, benthicd13C, d18O, and 87Sr/86Sr records from Site1090 can be correlated to isotope recordsfrom ODP Site 929 (Ceara Rise), providing support for the recently-published Oligocene/Miocene boundary age (22.92 Ma) of Shackleton et al

    Production of a0a_0-mesons in pp and pn reactions

    We investigate the cross section for the reaction NNNNa0NN \to NNa_0 near threshold and at medium energies. An effective Lagrangian approach with one-pion exchange is applied to analyze different contributions to the cross section for different isospin channels. The Reggeon exchange mechanism is also considered. The results are used to calculate the contribution of the a0a_0 meson to the cross sections and invariant KKˉK \bar K mass distributions of the reactions pppnK+Kˉ0pp\to pn K^+\bar K^0 and ppppK+Kpp\to pp K^+K^-. It is found that the experimental observation of a0+a_0^+ mesons in the reaction pppnK+Kˉ0pp\to pn K^+\bar K^0 is much more promising than the observation of a00a_0^0 mesons in the reaction ppppK+Kpp\to pp K^+K^-.Comment: 26 pages, including 11 eps figures, to be bublished in J.     Intra- and interspecific polymorphisms ofLeishmania donovani andL. tropica minicircle DNA

    A pair of degenerate polymerase chain reaction (PCR) primers (LEI-1, TCG GAT CC[C,T] [G,C]TG GGT AGG GGC GT; LEI-2, ACG GAT CC[G,C] [G,C][A,C]C TAT [A,T]TT ACA CC) defining a 0.15-kb segment ofLeishmania minicircle DNA was constructed. These primers amplified not only inter- but also intraspecifically polymorphic sequences. Individual sequences revealed a higher intraspecific than interspecific divergence. It is concluded that individual sequences are of limited relevance for species determination. In contrast, when a data base of 19 different sequences was analyzed in a dendrographic plot, an accurate species differentiation was feasible

    Two early-stage inverse power-law dyamics in nonlinear complex systems far-from equilibrium

    We consider the dynamics of the charge carriers in a tunneling-enhanced percolation network, named as a Random Resistor cum Tunneling-bond Network (RRTN), where we allow tunneling in the gap between two randomly thrown nearest neighbour metallic bonds only. Our earlier studies involve the dc and the ac nonlinear response, the percolative aspects, dielectric breakdown, low-temperature variable range hopping (VRH) conduction, etc. in the RRTN. Here we study the non-equilibrium dynamics of the carriers. With two far-from- equilibrium, initial inverse power-law relaxations extending over several decades, the dynamics has a lot of similarities with a wide variety of naturally occuring avalance-like, run-away phenomena in driven, disordered systems with statistically correlated randomness. In the power-law regime, the RRTN violates the Boltzmann's (or Debye) relaxation time approximation strongly. Beyond this regime, the response relaxes exponentially fast (acquires one time-scale) to a steady-state, and thus the relaxation approximation becomes exact.Comment: RevTex4, 6 pages, 4 figure

    Late Maastrichtian carbon isotope stratigraphy and cyclostratigraphy of the Newfoundland Margin (Site U1403, IODP Expedition 342)

    Earth’s climate during the Maastrichtian (latest Cretaceous) was punctuated by brief warming and cooling episodes, accompanied by perturbations of the global carbon cycle. Superimposed on a long-term cooling trend, the middle Maastrichtian is characterized by deep-sea warming and relatively high values of stable carbon-isotope ratios, followed by strong climatic variability towards the end of the Cretaceous. A lack of knowledge on the timing of climatic change inhibits our understanding of underlying causal mechanisms. We present an integrated stratigraphy from Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Site U1403, providing an expanded deep ocean record from the North Atlantic (Expedition 342, Newfoundland Margin). Distinct sedimentary cyclicity suggests that orbital forcing played a major role in depositional processes, which is confirmed by statistical analyses of high resolution elemental data obtained by X-ray fluorescence (XRF) core scanning. Astronomical calibration reveals that the investigated interval encompasses seven 405-kyr cycles (Ma4051 to Ma4057) and spans the 2.8 Myr directly preceding the Cretaceous/Paleocene (K/Pg) boundary. A high-resolution carbon-isotope record from bulk carbonates allows us to identify global trends in the late Maastrichtian carbon cycle. Low-amplitude variations (up to 0.4‰) in carbon isotopes at Site U1403 match similar scale variability in records from Tethyan and Pacific open-ocean sites. Comparison between Site U1403 and the hemipelagic restricted basin of the Zumaia section (northern Spain), with its own well-established independent cyclostratigraphic framework, is more complex. Whereas the pre-K/Pg oscillations and the negative values of the Mid-Maastrichtian Event (MME) can be readily discerned in both the Zumaia and U1403 records, patterns diverge during a ~ 1 Myr period in the late Maastrichtian (67.8–66.8 Ma), with Site U1403 more reliably reflecting global carbon cycling. Our new carbon isotope record and cyclostratigraphy offer promise for Site U1403 to serve as a future reference section for high-resolution studies of late Maastrichtian paleoclimatic change

    Scaling relation for determining the critical threshold for continuum percolation of overlapping discs of two sizes

    We study continuum percolation of overlapping circular discs of two sizes. We propose a phenomenological scaling equation for the increase in the effective size of the larger discs due to the presence of the smaller discs. The critical percolation threshold as a function of the ratio of sizes of discs, for different values of the relative areal densities of two discs, can be described in terms of a scaling function of only one variable. The recent accurate Monte Carlo estimates of critical threshold by Quintanilla and Ziff [Phys. Rev. E, 76 051115 (2007)] are in very good agreement with the proposed scaling relation.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

    Hopping Transport in the Presence of Site Energy Disorder: Temperature and Concentration Scaling of Conductivity Spectra

    Recent measurements on ion conducting glasses have revealed that conductivity spectra for various temperatures and ionic concentrations can be superimposed onto a common master curve by an appropriate rescaling of the conductivity and frequency. In order to understand the origin of the observed scaling behavior, we investigate by Monte Carlo simulations the diffusion of particles in a lattice with site energy disorder for a wide range of both temperatures and concentrations. While the model can account for the changes in ionic activation energies upon changing the concentration, it in general yields conductivity spectra that exhibit no scaling behavior. However, for typical concentrations and sufficiently low temperatures, a fairly good data collapse is obtained analogous to that found in experiment.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure

    Instanton approach to the Langevin motion of a particle in a random potential

    We develop an instanton approach to the non-equilibrium dynamics in one-dimensional random environments. The long time behavior is controlled by rare fluctuations of the disorder potential and, accordingly, by the tail of the distribution function for the time a particle needs to propagate along the system (the delay time). The proposed method allows us to find the tail of the delay time distribution function and delay time moments, providing thus an exact description of the long-time dynamics. We analyze arbitrary environments covering different types of glassy dynamics: dynamics in a short-range random field, creep, and Sinai's motion.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figur

    Localized and Delocalized Charge Transport in Single-Wall Carbon-Nanotube Mats

    We measured the complex dielectric constant in mats of single-wall carbon-nanotubes between 2.7 K and 300 K up to 0.5 THz. The data are well understood in a Drude approach with a negligible temperature dependence of the plasma frequency (omega_p) and scattering time (tau) with an additional contribution of localized charges. The dielectric properties resemble those of the best ''metallic'' polypyrroles and polyanilines. The absence of metallic islands makes the mats a relevant piece in the puzzle of the interpretation of tau and omega_p in these polymers.Comment: 4 pages including 4 figure
