    High-precision gravimetric survey in support of lunar laser ranging at Haleakala, Maui, 1976 - 1978

    The planning, observations and adjustment of high-precision gravity survey networks established on the islands of Maui and Oahu as part of the geodetic-geophysical program in support of lunar laser ranging at Haleakala, Maui, Hawaii are described. The gravity survey networks include 43 independently measured gravity differences along the gravity calibration line from Kahului Airport to the summit of Mt. Haleakala, together with some key points close to tidal gauges on Maui, and 40 gravity differences within metropolitan Honolulu. The results of the 1976-1978 survey are compared with surveys made in 1961 and in 1964-1965. All final gravity values are given in the system of the international gravity standardization net 1971 (IGSN 71); values are obtained by subtracting 14.57 mgal from the Potsdam value at the gravity base station at the Hickam Air Force Base, Honolulu

It is also common to see men swarm arounda car, pointing to themselves in an effort to get noticed and thus hired. This study deals with these people, who are day labourers leading a difficult life as they manage to survive in anentrepreneurial way. Their main need is to access work more easily. Skills training would make this possible. Social work could make a contribution in this respect

    Critical slowing down near the multiferroic phase transition in MnWO4_4

    By using broadband dielectric spectroscopy in the radiofrequency and microwave range we studied the magnetoelectric dynamics in the multiferroic chiral antiferromagnet MnWO4_4. Above the multiferroic phase transition at TN2≈12.6T_{N2} \approx 12.6 K we observe a critical slowing down of the corresponding magnetoelectric fluctuations resembling the soft-mode behavior in canonical ferroelectrics. This electric field driven excitation carries much less spectral weight than ordinary phonon modes. Also the critical slowing down of this mode scales with an exponent larger than one which is expected for magnetic second order phase transition scenarios. Therefore the investigated dynamics have to be interpreted as the softening of an electrically active magnetic excitation, an electromagnon.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, appendi

    Weak magnetism phenomena in heavy-fermion superconductors: selected μ\muSR studies

    The behavior of the so-called weak moment antiferromagnetic states, observed in the heavy-fermion superconductors UPt3_3 and URu2_2Si2_2, is discussed in view of recent μ\muSR results obtained as function of control parameters like chemical substitution and external pressure. In UPt3_3, the Pd substitution for Pt reveals the dynamical character of the weak moment order. On the other hand, μ\muSR measurements performed on samples in which Th substitutes U suggest that crystallographic disorder on the magnetic sites deeply affects the fluctuation timescale. In URu2_2Si2_2, a phase separation between the so-called hidden order state, present at ambient pressure, and an antiferromagnetic state, occurring under pressure, is observed. In view of the pressure-temperature phase diagram obtained by μ\muSR, it is deduced that the respective order parameters have different symmetries.Comment: To appear in: J. Phys.: Cond. Matte

    Pressure Induced Static Magnetic Order in Superconducting FeSe_1-x

    We report on a detailed investigation of the electronic phase diagram of FeSe_1-x under pressures up to 1.4GPa by means of AC magnetization and muon-spin rotation. At a pressure \simeq0.8GPa the non-magnetic and superconducting FeSe_1-x enters a region where long range static magnetic order is realized above T_c and bulk superconductivity coexists and competes on short length scales with the magnetic order below T_c. For even higher pressures an enhancement of both the magnetic and the superconducting transition temperatures as well as of the corresponding order parameters is observed. These exceptional properties make FeSe1-x to be one of the most interesting superconducting systems investigated extensively at present.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
