Of course, not all occurences can be discussed so this paper could be seen as an introduction to missing data within regression analysis and as an extension to the early paper of Little (1992)

    Cooling antihydrogen atoms is important for future experiments both to test the fundamental CPT symmetry by high-resolution laser spectroscopy and also to measure the gravitational acceleration of antimatter. Laser-cooling of antihydrogen can be done on the strong 1S-2P transition at the wavelength of Lyman-alpha (121.6nm). A continuous-wave laser at the Lyman-alpha wavelength based on solid-state fundamental lasers is described. By using a two-photon and a near one photon resonance a scan across the whole phasematching curve of the four-wave mixing process is possible. Furthermore the influence of the beam profile of one fundamental beam on the four-wave mixing process is studied.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    The valuation of European financial firms

    We extend the recent literature concerning accounting based valuation models to investigate financial firms from six European countries with substantial financial sectors: France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Switzerland and the UK. Not only are these crucial industries worthy of study in their own right, but unusual accounting practices, and inter-country differences in those accounting practices, provide valuable insights into the accounting-value relationship. Our sample consists of 7,714 financial firm/years observations from 1,140 companies drawn from 1989-2000. Sub-samples include 1,309 firm/years for banks, 650 for insurance companies, 1,705 for real estate firms, and 3,239 for investment companies. In most countries we find that the valuation models work as well or better in explaining cross-sectional variations in the market-to-book ratio for financial firms as they do for industrial and commercial firms in the same countries, although Switzerland is an exception to this generalization. As expected, the results are sensitive to industrial differences, accounting regulation and accounting practices. In particular, marking assets to market value reduces the relevance of earnings figures and increases that of equity

    Although there is evidence for correlations between disability and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) total lesion volume in autosomal dominant arteriopathy with subcortical infarcts and leukoencephalopathy (CADASIL), the significance of structural MRI abnormalities for cognitive dysfunction remains controversial. We performed detailed neuropsychological testing, high resolution MRI, and Tc-99m-ethyl cysteinate-dimer SPECT in three CADASIL patients. MR-images were rated independently by two investigators for the presence of white matter lesions, lacunar infarcts, microbleeds, and ventricular enlargement. Cortical atrophy was quantified by the use of automatic morphometric assessment of the cortical thickness. In addition, laboratory and patients' history data were collected in order to assess the individual vascular risk factor profile. The differences in cognitive performance between the three patients are neither explained by structural-, or functional neuroimaging, nor by the patient-specific vascular risk factor profiles. The neuroradiologically least affected patient met criteria for dementia, whereas the most severely affected patient was in the best clinical and cognitive state. Conventional structural and functional neuroimaging is important for the diagnosis of CADASIL, but it is no sufficient surrogate marker for the associated cognitive decline. Detailed neuropsychological assessment seems to be more useful, particularly with respect to the implementation of reliable outcome parameters in possible therapeutic trials

    Inhibition of Na+/H+ exchange reduces Ca2+ mobilization without affecting the initial cleavage of phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate in thrombin-stimulated platelets

    AbstractStimulation of human platelets increases cytoplasmic pH (pHi) via activation of Na+/H+ exchange. We have determined the effect of inhibiting Na+/H+ exchange on (i) thrombin-induced Ca2+ mobilization and (ii) turnover of 32P-labelled phospholipids. Blocking Na+/H+ exchange by removal of extracellular Na+ or by ethylisopropylamiloride (EIPA) inhibited Ca2+ mobilization induced by 0.2 Uml thrombin, whereas increasing pHi by NH4C1 enhanced the thrombin-induced increase in cytosolic free Ca2+. The effect of EIPA was bypassed after increasing pHi by moneasin. The thrombin-induced cleavage of phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate (PIP2) was unaffected by treatments that blocked Na+/H+ exchange or increased pHi. It is concluded that activation of Na+/H+ exchange is a prerequisite for Ca2+ mobilization in human platelets but not for the stimulus-induced hydrolysis of PIP2
