    Strange Quark Contribution to the Nucleon Spin from Electroweak Elastic Scattering Data

    The total contribution of strange quarks to the intrinsic spin of the nucleon can be determined from a measurement of the strange-quark contribution to the nucleon's elastic axial form factor. We have studied the strangeness contribution to the elastic vector and axial form factors of the nucleon, using elastic electroweak scattering data. Specifically, we combine elastic νp\nu p and νˉp\bar{\nu} p scattering cross section data from the Brookhaven E734 experiment with elastic epep and quasi-elastic eded and ee-4^4He scattering parity-violating asymmetry data from the SAMPLE, HAPPEx, G0 and PVA4 experiments. We have not only determined these form factors at individual values of momentum-transfer (Q2Q^2), but also have fit the Q2Q^2-dependence of these form factors using simple functional forms. We present the results of these fits, along with some expectations of how our knowledge of these form factors can be improved with data from Fermilab experiments.Comment: 3 pages, 1 figure, CIPANP 201

    Theoretical model for the images formed by a spherical particle in a coherent imaging system: comparison

    A simple theoretical model is presented that allows calculation of the image produced by a spherical absorbing particle illuminated by monochromatic, coherent laser light. Results presented in this paper are restricted to a singe-lens imaging system, although generalization to more complex imaging system configurations would be straightfoward. The method uses classic Lorenz-Mie scattering theory to obtain the electromagnetic field external to an absorbing spherical particle and a Fourier optics approach to calculate the intensities in the image plane. Experimental results evaluating focus characteristics are examined for 50 um diameter water droplets using an N2 laser imaging system in conjunction with a digital image processor, and the experimental images are compared with a digital image processor, and the experimental images are compared to the results of the theoretical model. Comparative focus criteria results are particularly useful in aerosol science research involving dynamic particle size measuremetns in which criteria for focus and depth of field must be established

    Antiferromagnetic interlayer exchange coupling across an amorphous metallic spacer layer

    By means of magneto-optical Kerr effect we observe for the first time antiferromagnetic coupling between ferromagnetic layers across an amorphous metallic spacer layer. Biquadratic coupling occurs at the transition from a ferromagnetically to an antiferromagnetically coupled region. Scanning tunneling microscopy images of all involved layers are used to extract thickness fluctuations and to verify the amorphous state of the spacer. The observed antiferromagnetic coupling behavior is explained by RKKY interaction taking into account the amorphous structure of the spacer material.Comment: Typset using RevTex, 4 pages with 4 figures (.eps

    A Pilot Study on the Feasibility and Acceptability of a Text Message-Based Aftercare Treatment Programme Among Alcohol Outpatients

    Aims: To test the feasibility, acceptability and initial effectiveness of a text message-based aftercare treatment programme among alcohol outpatients. Methods: Clients treated for alcohol use disorders from three Swiss outpatient alcohol treatment centres were invited by their counsellors to participate in a study testing an interactive aftercare programme employing the use of text messages and personal phone calls. Fifty study participants were randomly assigned to either the 6-month aftercare programme (n = 25) or treatment as usual (n = 25). The intervention consisted of (a) monitoring of self-selected drinking goals at regular intervals, (b) motivational text messages to stick to self-selected drinking goals and (c) proactive telephone calls from counsellors when participants neglected to stick to their drinking goals or expressed a need for support. Follow-up interviews were conducted 6 months after randomization. Results: Throughout the programme, participants received a total of 421 text message prompts. Out of these, participants provided valid replies to 371 (88.1%) within 48 h. Out of the 25 participants in the intervention group, 11 (44.0%) sent at least one call-for-help reply. Based on complete case data, at risk alcohol use at follow-up was 41.7% in the control group and 28.6% in the intervention group (OR = 0.56, 95% CI = 0.16-1.95, P = 0.36).     Electrochromic orbit control for smart-dust devices

    Recent advances in MEMS (micro electromechanical systems) technology are leading to spacecraft which are the shape and size of computer chips, so-called SpaceChips, or ‘smart dust devices’. These devices can offer highly distributed sensing when used in future swarm applications. However, they currently lack a feasible strategy for active orbit control. This paper proposes an orbit control methodology for future SpaceChip devices which is based on exploiting the effects of solar radiation pressure using electrochromic coatings. The concept presented makes use of the high area-to-mass ratio of these devices, and consequently the large force exerted upon them by solar radiation pressure, to control their orbit evolution by altering their surface optical properties. The orbital evolution of Space Chips due to solar radiation pressure can be represented by a Hamiltonian system, allowing an analytic development of the control methodology. The motion in the orbital element phase space resembles that of a linear oscillator, which is used to formulate a switching control law. Additional perturbations and the effect of eclipses are accounted for by modifying the linearized equations of the secular change in orbital elements around an equilibrium point in the phase space of the problem.     Strong electron correlations in the normal state of FeSe0.42Te0.58

    We investigate the normal state of the '11' iron-based superconductor FeSe0.42Te0.58 by angle resolved photoemission. Our data reveal a highly renormalized quasiparticle dispersion characteristic of a strongly correlated metal. We find sheet dependent effective carrier masses between ~ 3 - 16 m_e corresponding to a mass enhancement over band structure values of m*/m_band ~ 6 - 20. This is nearly an order of magnitude higher than the renormalization reported previously for iron-arsenide superconductors of the '1111' and '122' families but fully consistent with the bulk specific heat.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, to appear in Phys.     Taking reasonable pluralism seriously: an internal critique of political liberalism

    The later Rawls attempts to offer a non-comprehensive, but nonetheless moral justification in political philosophy. Many critics of political liberalism doubt that this is successful, but Rawlsians often complain that such criticisms rely on the unwarranted assumption that one cannot offer a moral justification other than by taking a philosophically comprehensive route. In this article, I internally criticize the justification strategy employed by the later Rawls. I show that he cannot offer us good grounds for the rational hope that citizens will assign political values priority over non-political values in cases of conflict about political matters. I also suggest an alternative approach to justification in political philosophy (that is, a weak realist, Williams-inspired account) that better respects the later Rawls’s concern with non-comprehensiveness and pluralism than either his own view or more comprehensive approaches. Thus, if we take reasonable pluralism seriously, then we should adopt what Shklar aptly called ‘liberalism of fear’. </jats:p
