    Alien Hand Syndrome: Neural Correlates of Movements without Conscious Will

    BACKGROUND: The alien hand syndrome is a striking phenomenon characterized by purposeful and autonomous movements that are not voluntarily initiated. This study aimed to examine neural correlates of this rare neurological disorder in a patient with corticobasal degeneration and alien hand syndrome of the left hand. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We employed functional magnetic resonance imaging to investigate brain responses associated with unwanted movements in a case study. Results revealed that alien hand movements involved a network of brain activations including the primary motor cortex, premotor cortex, precuneus, and right inferior frontal gyrus. Conscious and voluntary movements of the alien hand elicited a similar network of brain responses but lacked an activation of the inferior frontal gyrus. The results demonstrate that alien and unwanted movements may engage similar brain networks than voluntary movements, but also imply different functional contributions of prefrontal areas. Since the inferior frontal gyrus was uniquely activated during alien movements, the results provide further support for a specific role of this brain region in inhibitory control over involuntary motor responses. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: We discuss the outcome of this study as providing evidence for a distributed neural network associated with unwanted movements in alien hand syndrome, including brain regions known to be related to movement execution and planning as well as areas that have been linked to inhibition control (inferior frontal gyrus) and experience of agency (precuneus)

    Embodiment of the Macbeth effect is mapped topographically onto the somatosensory cortex

    The theory of embodied cognition claims that knowledge is represented in modal systems derived from perception. Recent behavioral studies found evidence for this hypothesis, for example, by linking moral purity with physical cleansing (the Macbeth effect). Neurophysiological approaches provided further support by showing an involvement of sensorimotor cortices for embodied metaphors. However, the exact role of this brain region for embodied cognitions remains to be cleared. Here we demonstrate that the involvement of the sensorimotor cortex for the embodied metaphor of moral-purity is somatotopically organized. Participants enacted in scenarios where they had to perform immoral or moral acts either with their mouths or their hands. Results showed that mouthwash products were particularly desirable after lying in a voice mail and hand wash products were particularly desirable after writing a lie, thus demonstrating that the moral-purity metaphor is specific to the sensorimotor modality involved in earlier immoral behavior. FMRI results of this interaction showed activation in sensorimotor cortices during the evaluation phase that was somatotopically organized with respect to preceding lying in a voice mail (mouth-area) or in a written note (hand-area). Thus, the results provide evidence for a central role of the sensorimotor cortices for embodied metaphors

    Renormalization Group Flow in large N_c

    We calculate renormalization group flow equations for the linear sigma-model in large N_c approximation. The flow equations decouple and can be solved analytically. The solution is equal to a self consistent solution of the NJL model in the same approximation, which shows that flow equations are a promising method to extend the calculation to higher order in 1/N_c. Including explicit chiral symmetry breaking, the large N_c approximation describes physics reasonably well.     Fecundity limits in Frangula alnus (Rhamnaceae) relict populations at the species' southern range margin

    The geographic range of many temperate plant species is constrained by climate, but it remains little known how climate affects population performance at low-latitude range margins. This study investigated the reproduction of the Eurasian tree Frangula alnus in relict populations near its southwestern range limit in southern Spain. The aim was to identify the principal stages and causes of ovule loss experienced by these marginal populations. More than 6,800 flowers were monitored over 2 years, insect observations and different experiments were carried out to assess levels of pollen and resource limitation, as well as the influence of flowering phenology on seed production. Most ovule losses occurred during flower anthesis and were due to strong cross-pollen limitation. Fruit set was affected by tree size, light regime and flowering phenology, probably through their effects on pollinator behaviour. Fruit set was almost zero throughout the first half of the flowering season. Then it increased paralleling changes in pollinator abundance but was soon overridden by increasing ovule desiccation due to summer drought. Successful seed production was mostly confined to a brief period near the end of the flowering season. Adverse weather during this period in the second study year resulted in a threefold bud and flower mortality and a 50% decrease of fruit production. Spring rainfalls in southwestern Spain have diminished more than 30% through past decades leading to an earlier onset of summer drought. This trend and its adverse effects on seed production may contribute to explaining the recent decline of F. alnus at its southwestern range limit. © Springer-Verlag 2005.Peer Reviewe

    Small proteoglycans of normal adult human kidney: Distinct expression patterns of decorin, biglycan, fibromodulin, and lumican.BackgroundAmong the members of the small leucine-rich proteoglycan family, decorin, biglycan, and fibromodulin have been proposed to be potent modulators of transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) activity, thereby playing an important role in the pathogenesis of fibrotic kidney diseases. Furthermore, decorin expression influences the expression of p21WAF1/CIP1, which has been related to kidney hypertrophy and hyperplasia. However, none of the members of this proteoglycan family have been investigated in normal adult human kidney cortex, thus making it impossible to correlate disease-mediated alterations of their expression with the normal situation in vivo.MethodsThe chondroitin/dermatan sulfate proteoglycans, decorin and biglycan, and the keratan sulfate proteoglycans, fibromodulin and lumican, were investigated in normal human adult renal cortex by immunohistochemistry on the light and electron microscopic level and by in situ hybridization. Northern blot and reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) methods were used to get an estimate of their expression in isolated glomeruli. Decorin excretion with the urine was measured by Western blotting.ResultsTwo bands of decorin and a single band of biglycan mRNA were identified in Northern blots of isolated glomeruli. Amplification by RT-PCR was required to detect the signals for fibromodulin and lumican. All four proteoglycans were preferentially expressed in the renal interstitium with accumulations around tubules. Weak expression was found in the mesangial matrix. Biglycan was expressed by glomerular endothelial cells and, together with fibromodulin, was synthesized and deposited in distal tubular cells and collecting ducts. Immunogold labeling indicated the presence of the proteoglycans in the glomerular basement membrane, which was interpreted as a result of glomerular filtration. Indirect evidence suggested tubular reuptake of decorin after glomerular filtration.ConclusionThe data indicate that the different cells of the adult human kidney are characterized by a distinct expression pattern of the four small proteoglycans. It is suggested that these proteoglycans may have distinct pathophysiological roles depending upon whether they are expressed by mesangial cells, endothelial cells, epithelial cells, or cells of the tubulointerstitium

    A Case of Right Alien Hand Syndrome Coexisting with Right-Sided Tactile Extinction

    The alien hand syndrome (AHS) is a fascinating movement disorder. Patients with AHS experience one of their limbs as alien, which acts autonomously and performs meaningful movements without being guided by the intention of the patient. Here, we report a case of a 74-years old lady diagnosed with an atypical Parkinson syndrome by possible corticobasal degeneration. The patient stated that she could not control her right hand and that she felt like this hand had her own life. We tested the patient for ownership illusions of the hands and general tactile processing. Results revealed that when blindfolded, the patient recognized touch to her alien hand only if it was presented separated from touch to the other hand (bilateral asynchronous touch). Delivering touch synchronously to both the alien and the healthy hand resulted in failure of recognizing touch to the alien hand (bilateral synchronous touch). Thus, AHS here co-existed with right-sided tactile extinction and is one of only very few cases in which the alien hand was felt on the right side. We discuss the results in the light of recent research on AHS
