    Effective thermal conductivities of four metal ceramic composite coatings in hydrogen-oxygen rocket firings

    An experimental investigation was conducted to determine the effective conductivities of four plasma-arc-sprayed, metal-ceramic gradated coatings on hydrogen-oxygen thrust chambers. The effective thermal conductivities were not a function of pressure or oxidant-to-fuel ratio. The various materials that made up these composites do not seem to affect the thermal conductivity values as much as the differences in the thermal conductivities of the parent materials would lead one to expect. Contact resistance evolving from the spraying process seems to be the controlling factor. The thermal conductivities of all the composites tested fell in the range of 0.75 to 7.5 watts per meter kelvin

    Reliability and effective thermal conductivity of three metallic-ceramic composite insulating coatings on cooled hydrogen-oxygen rockets

    An experimental investigation of the structural integrity and effective thermal conductivity of three metallic-ceramic composite coatings was conducted. These coatings were plasma sprayed onto the combustion side of water-cooled, 12.7-centimeter throat diameter, hydrogen-oxygen rocket thrust chambers operating at 2.07 to 4.14 meganewtons per square meter chamber pressure. The metallic-ceramic composites functioned for six to 17 cycles and for as long as 213 seconds of rocket operations and could have probably provided their insulating properties for many additional cycles. The effective thermal conductivity of all the coatings was in the range of 0.7472 to 4.483 w/(m)(K), which makes the coatings a very effective thermal barrier. Photomicrographic studies of cross-sectioned coolant tubes seem to indicate that the effective thermal conductivity of the coatings is controlled by contact resistance between the particles, as a result of the spraying process, and not the thermal conductivity of the bulk materials

    Simulation System for the Wendelstein 7-X Safety Control System

    The Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) Safety Instrumented System (SIS) ensures personal safety and investment protection. The development and implementation of the SIS are based on the international safety standard for the process industry sector, IEC 61511. The SIS exhibits a distributed and hierarchical organized architecture consisting of a central Safety System (cSS) on the top and many local Safety Systems (lSS) at the bottom. Each technical component or diagnostic system potentially hazardous for the staff or for the device is equipped with an lSS. The cSS is part of the central control system of W7-X. Whereas the lSSs are responsible for the safety of each individual component, the cSS ensures safety of the whole W7-X device. For every operation phase of the W7-X experiment hard- and software updates for the SIS are mandatory. New components with additional lSS functionality and additional safety signals have to be integrated. Already established safety functions must be adapted and new safety functions have to be integrated into the cSS. Finally, the safety programs of the central and local safety systems have to be verified for every development stage and validated against the safety requirement specification. This contribution focuses on the application of a model based simulation system for the whole SIS of W7-X. A brief introduction into the development process of the SIS and its technical realization will be give followed by a description of the design and implementation of the SIS simulation system using the framework SIMIT (Siemens). Finally, first application experiences of this simulation system for the preparation of the SIS for the upcoming operation phase OP 1.2b of W7-X will be discussed

    This analysis will examine the sample of bills in four parts. Because some of the proposed state bills are silent on whether their respective bills are reserved for non-commercial matters, Part II examines whether the bills apply to businesses that are parties to business-to-business international commercial contracts. Part III assesses the bills\u27 definition of foreign law to better understand the scope of the anti-foreign law bans. Because each anti-foreign law bill initially defines foreign law as one that is created outside the U.S., Part III analyzes whether the bills\u27 foreign law definitions include international organizations and tribunals. It is important to determine whether international organizations and tribunals are included in the bills\u27 definition of foreign law because the bills could preclude parties from utilizing arbitration and mediation procedures from international institutions, such as the ICC. Part IV consists of conclusive remarks regarding state legislative attempts to balance the desire to ban foreign law from state arbitration, mediation, and litigation, and to protect their citizens\u27 constitutional rights, while not deterring international businesses from conducting business in their states

    Evaluating Methods of Estimating Forage Intake by Grazing Cattle

    Two methods of estimating forage intake of grazing cattle were compared to clipped estimates in 4-pasture rotational grazing systems on Sandhills subirrigated meadow from mid-May through early August over a 4-year period. Clipping standing vegetation samples within a pasture before and after cattle grazing provides for an accurate estimate of forage removal during a grazing period. A less laborious method of intake estimation commonly used is based on a percentage of an animal’s liveweight. University Extension and some federal agencies use a 2.3% factor and others such as the Natural Resources Conservation Service use a 2.7% factor. In this study on a Sandhills subirrigated meadow, the 2.3% of body weight intake factor appropriately matched the clipping estimates in 63% of the evaluations. In contrast, the 2.7% of body weight factor provided similar estimates to the clipping estimate in only 38% of the evaluations. This implies that the 2.3% estimate more accurately represents forage intake of beef cattle and has less chance of overestimating cattle intake. Allocation of surplus forage to grazing cattle reduces harvest efficiency, reduces beef production per acre, and negatively effects profitability of beef operations

    Low Voltage Control for the Liquid Argon Hadronic End-Cap Calorimeter of ATLAS

    At the ATLAS detector a SCADA system surveys and controls the sub- detectors. The link is realized by PVSS2 software and a CanBus hardware system. The low voltages for the Hadronic Endcaps of the liquid argon calorimeter are produced by DC/DC-converters in the power boxes and split into 320 channels corresponding to the pre- amplifier and summing boards in the cryostat. Six units of a prototype distribution board are currently under test. Each of it contains 2 ELMBs as CanBus interface, a FPGA of type QL3012 for digital control and 30 low voltage regulators for the individual fine adjustments of the outputs
