A Comparative Examination of Suicide Rates among Hetero- & Homosexual Adolescents and Young Adults

    Get PDF
The focus of this literature review will be on the comparison of suicide rates between heterosexual and homosexual adolescents and young adults (ages 14-24), and the possible contributing factors. Age, the degree to which adolescents are open with their sexual identity, and the social support they receive are examined as contributing factors to the cited differences in suicide rates across sexual orientation identities. In this literature review, I will conclude that suicide rates are higher among homosexual adolescents and young adults; however, this significant difference disappears once the individuals enter adulthood. Researchers may pursue this relationship In order to find the best ways to assist homosexual adolescents through the period of potential suicide risk and into their adult years, and therefore perhaps begin reducing the rate of adolescent suicide

Using Federal Nondiscrimination Laws to Avoid ERISA: Securing Protection From Transgender Discrimination in Employee Health Benefit Plans

Recent attempts to repeal the Affordable Care Act and the potential rollback of the interpretation of the protections the Act affords transgender people put transgender people at risk of being denied services and coverage for gender-affirming care. This Article provides advocates with alternative legal arguments to help employees bring claims when their employer provides a health benefit plan that discriminates on the basis of gender identity. These arguments can avoid the Employee Retirement Income Security Act’s broad preemption scheme and lack of nondiscrimination provisions. This Article proposes that, based on a narrow exception to preemption regarding the Employee Retirement Income Security Act’s construction with other federal laws and the case law interpreting that exception, federal nondiscrimination laws — including Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Title I of the Americans with Disabilities Act — may and must play a role in regulating discrimination on the basis of gender identity in employee health benefit plans

Petrology and mineralogy of the Old Workings Area, El Salvador, Chile

The \u27Old Workings Area,\u27 so called for its early mining by the Incas, is located 4 1/2 miles northeast of the El Salvador Porphyry copper deposit, the third largest copper producer in Chile. The area mapped in this study is shown to consist of rhyolite pebble conglomerate, two volcanic flows, andesite and rhyolite porphyry, and two intrusions. Quartz porphyry and tourmaline-bearing breccia. Petrographic study of surface and drill core rock samples confirms the field nomenclature used for the five rock types. All of the rock types are altered, but the quartz porphyry and andesite are the most intensely altered. Both hydrothermal and weathering actions have contributed to the alteration. Ore microscopic investigations of selected polished surfaces showed that pyrite, chalcopyrite, and molybdenite are the primary sulphides in the \u27Old Workings Area.\u27 The secondary copper minerals, chalcocite and covellite, replace the primary sulphide minerals. At the surface the copper sulphides are oxidized to brochanthite, chrysocolla, and antlerite. Hematite, hausmannite, and braunite locally are present as fracture coatings --Abstract, page i

A secondary ion microprobe ion trap mass spectrometer

AbstractAn ion trap mass analyzer has been attached to an organic secondary ion microprobe. A pressure differential >100 can be maintained between the ion trap and microprobe. The well-focused secondary ion beam can transit a small (2 mm) diameter tube, but gas flow from ion trap to microprobe is impeded. This pressure differential allows the microprobe to retain imaging capability. Ion trap and microprobe data systems are integrated by taking advantage of the highly reproducible periodicity of the ion trap operating in resonant ejection mode and asynchronous signal and data acquisition afforded by commercially available interface cards. Secondary ion mass spectra and images obtained indicate an approximately 10-fold improvement in sensitivity, although preliminary evidence indicates low (<1%) trapping efficiency. Image data acquisition using the ion trap for mass analysis requires at least 10 times as much time compared to using a quadrupole mass filter because the mass-selected instability mode is used for mass analysis, i.e., mass resolution in the ion trap is not continuous as it is in the quadrupole

    Exploring ChatGPT's Empathic Abilities

Empathy is often understood as the ability to share and understand another individual's state of mind or emotion. With the increasing use of chatbots in various domains, e.g., children seeking help with homework, individuals looking for medical advice, and people using the chatbot as a daily source of everyday companionship, the importance of empathy in human-computer interaction has become more apparent. Therefore, our study investigates the extent to which ChatGPT based on GPT-3.5 can exhibit empathetic responses and emotional expressions. We analyzed the following three aspects: (1) understanding and expressing emotions, (2) parallel emotional response, and (3) empathic personality. Thus, we not only evaluate ChatGPT on various empathy aspects and compare it with human behavior but also show a possible way to analyze the empathy of chatbots in general. Our results show, that in 91.7% of the cases, ChatGPT was able to correctly identify emotions and produces appropriate answers. In conversations, ChatGPT reacted with a parallel emotion in 70.7% of cases. The empathic capabilities of ChatGPT were evaluated using a set of five questionnaires covering different aspects of empathy. Even though the results show, that the scores of ChatGPT are still worse than the average of healthy humans, it scores better than people who have been diagnosed with Asperger syndrome / high-functioning autism
