Highly Sensitive Gamma-Spectrometers of GERDA for Material Screening: Part 2
The previous article about material screening for GERDA points out the
importance of strict material screening and selection for radioimpurities as a
key to meet the aspired background levels of the GERDA experiment. This is
directly done using low-level gamma-spectroscopy. In order to provide
sufficient selective power in the mBq/kg range and below, the employed
gamma-spectrometers themselves have to meet strict material requirements, and
make use of an elaborate shielding system. This article gives an account of the
setup of two such spectrometers. Corrado is located in a depth of 15 m w.e. at
the MPI-K in Heidelberg (Germany), GeMPI III is situated at the Gran-Sasso
underground laboratory at 3500 m w.e. (Italy). The latter one aims at detecting
sample activities of the order ~0.01 mBq/kg, which is the current
state-of-the-art level. The applied techniques to meet the respective needs are
discussed and demonstrated by experimental results.Comment: Featured in: Proceedings of the XIV International Baksan School

Nuclear matrix elements for neutrinoless double-beta decay and double-electron capture
A new generation of neutrinoless double beta decay experiments with improved
sensitivity is currently under design and construction. They will probe
inverted hierarchy region of the neutrino mass pattern. There is also a revived
interest to the resonant neutrinoless double-electron capture, which has also a
potential to probe lepton number conservation and to investigate the neutrino
nature and mass scale. The primary concern are the nuclear matrix elements.
Clearly, the accuracy of the determination of the effective Majorana neutrino
mass from the measured 0\nu\beta\beta-decay half-life is mainly determined by
our knowledge of the nuclear matrix elements. We review recent progress
achieved in the calculation of 0\nu\beta\beta and 0\nu ECEC nuclear matrix
elements within the quasiparticle random phase approximation. A considered
self-consistent approach allow to derive the pairing, residual interactions and
the two-nucleon short-range correlations from the same modern realistic
nucleon-nucleon potentials. The effect of nuclear deformation is taken into
account. A possibility to evaluate 0\nu\beta\beta-decay matrix elements
phenomenologically is discussed.Comment: 24 pages; 80 references. arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap

The -cleus experiment: A gram-scale fiducial-volume cryogenic detector for the first detection of coherent neutrino-nucleus scattering
We discuss a small-scale experiment, called -cleus, for the first
detection of coherent neutrino-nucleus scattering by probing nuclear-recoil
energies down to the 10 eV-regime. The detector consists of low-threshold
CaWO and AlO calorimeter arrays with a total mass of about 10 g and
several cryogenic veto detectors operated at millikelvin temperatures.
Realizing a fiducial volume and a multi-element target, the detector enables
active discrimination of , neutron and surface backgrounds. A first
prototype AlO device, operated above ground in a setup without
shielding, has achieved an energy threshold of eV and further
improvements are in reach. A sensitivity study for the detection of coherent
neutrino scattering at nuclear power plants shows a unique discovery potential
(5) within a measuring time of weeks. Furthermore, a site
at a thermal research reactor and the use of a radioactive neutrino source are
investigated. With this technology, real-time monitoring of nuclear power
plants is feasible.Comment: 14 pages, 19 figure
Highly sensitive gamma-spectrometers of GERDA for material screening: Part I
The GERDA experiment aims to search for the neutrinoless double beta-decay of
76Ge and possibly for other rare processes. The sensitivity of the first phase
is envisioned to be more than one order of magnitude better than in previous
neutrinoless double beta-decay experiments. This implies that materials with
ultra-low radioactive contamination need to be used for the construction of the
detector and its shielding. Therefore the requirements on material screening
include high-sensitivity low-background detection techniques and long
measurement times. In this article, an overview of material-screening
laboratories available to the GERDA collaboration is given, with emphasis on
the gamma-spectrometry. Additionally, results of an intercomparison of the
evaluation accuracy in these laboratories are presented.Comment: Featured in: Proceedings of the XIV International Baksan School

Characterization of a Li-6 loaded liquid organic scintillator for fast neutron spectrometry and thermal neutron detection
The characterization of a liquid scintillator incorporating an aqueous
solution of enriched lithium chloride to produce a scintillator with 0.40% Li-6
is presented, including the performance of the scintillator in terms of its
optical properties and neutron response. The scintillator was incorporated into
a fast neutron spectrometer, and the light output spectra from 2.5 MeV, 14.1
MeV, and Cf-252 neutrons were measured using capture-gated coincidence
techniques. The spectrometer was operated without coincidence to perform
thermal neutron measurements. Possible improvements in spectrometer performance
are discussed.Comment: Submitted to Applied Radiation and Isotopes. 11 pages, 7 figures, 3

Large scale Gd-beta-diketonate based organic liquid scintillator production for antineutrino detection
Over the course of several decades, organic liquid scintillators have formed
the basis for successful neutrino detectors. Gadolinium-loaded liquid
scintillators provide efficient background suppression for electron
antineutrino detection at nuclear reactor plants. In the Double Chooz reactor
antineutrino experiment, a newly developed beta-diketonate gadolinium-loaded
scintillator is utilized for the first time. Its large scale production and
characterization are described. A new, light yield matched metal-free companion
scintillator is presented. Both organic liquids comprise the target and "Gamma
Catcher" of the Double Chooz detectors.Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures, 5 table
