    Employer Health Benefits 2016 Annual Survey

    This annual survey of employers provides a detailed look at trends in employer-sponsored health coverage including premiums, employee contributions, cost-sharing provisions, and employer opinions. The 2016 survey included almost 1,900 interviews with non-federal public and private firms.Annual premiums for employer-sponsored family health coverage reached 18,142thisyear,up3percentfromlastyear,withworkersonaveragepaying18,142 this year, up 3 percent from last year, with workers on average paying 5,277 towards the cost of their coverage, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation/Health Research & Education Trust 2016 Employer Health Benefits Survey.     Crop Responses to AmiSorb in the North Central Region

    Originally used to prevent scale in boilers, carpramid or thermal polyaspartate (copoly[(3-carboxypropionamide)( 2-carboxylmethyl) acetamide)] was brought to agriculture under the trade names AmiSorb and Magnet. It claimed to increase nutrient uptake through artificially increasing the volume of soil occupied by roots through increased root branching and root hair development. Under controlled hydroponic or greenhouse conditions, the use of carpramid increased nutrient uptake, some yield determining factors such as wheat tillering and in some cases, crop yield. Extensive field testing from 1996 to 1998 under various nutrient regimes, placements, forms, and timings resulted in very inconsistent performance. Averaged across all experiments for which data were available, small yield increases were observed for corn (+1.75 bushels/acre), soybean (+0.63 bushel/acre), wheat (+1.07 bushels/acre), and grain sorghum (+0.32 bushel/acre), but at best only about one-fourth of the experiments (27 percent for corn and wheat) showed statistically significant yield increases. Across all crops, only three experiments showed an economic advantage to using carpramid. An attempt was made to better define the conditions when responses were observed but no clear pattern emerged that would allow improved probability of predicting a positive response.https://lib.dr.iastate.edu/extension_pubs/1225/thumbnail.jp

    Against Reduction

    Provocative, hopeful essays imagine a future that is not reduced to algorithms. What is human flourishing in an age of machine intelligence, when many claim that the world's most complex problems can be reduced to narrow technical questions? Does more computing make us more intelligent, or simply more computationally powerful? We need not always resist reduction; our ability to simplify helps us interpret complicated situations. The trick is to know when and how to do so. Against Reduction offers a collection of provocative and illuminating essays that consider different ways of recognizing and addressing the reduction in our approach to artificial intelligence, and ultimately to ourselves. Inspired by a widely read manifesto by Joi Ito that called for embracing the diversity and irreducibility of the world, these essays offer persuasive and compelling variations on resisting reduction. Among other things, the writers draw on Indigenous epistemology to argue for an extended “circle of relationships” that includes the nonhuman and robotic; cast “Snow White” as a tale of AI featuring a smart mirror; point out the cisnormativity of security protocol algorithms; map the interconnecting networks of so-called noncommunicable disease; and consider the limits of moral mathematics. Taken together, they show that we should push back against some of the reduction around us and do whatever is in our power to work toward broader solutions

    The impact of pediatric emergency department crowding on patient and health care system outcomes: a multicentre cohort study.

    BACKGROUND: Emergency department overcrowding has been associated with increased odds of hospital admission and mortality after discharge from the emergency department in predominantly adult cohorts. The objective of this study was to evaluate the association between crowding and the odds of several adverse outcomes among children seen at a pediatric emergency department. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study involving all children visiting 8 Canadian pediatric emergency departments across 4 provinces between 2010 and 2014. We analyzed the association between mean departmental length of stay for each index visit and hospital admission within 7 days or death within 14 days of emergency department discharge, as well as hospital admission at index visit and return visits within 7 days, using mixed-effects logistic regression modelling. RESULTS: A total of 1 931 465 index visits occurred across study sites over the 5-year period, with little variation in index visit hospital admission or median length of stay. Hospital admission within 7 days of discharge and 14-day mortality were low across provinces (0.8%-1.5% and \u3c 10 per 100 000 visits, respectively), and their association with mean departmental length of stay varied by triage categories and across sites but was not significant. There were increased odds of hospital admission at the index visit with increasing departmental crowding among visits triaged to Canadian Triage and Acuity Scale (CTAS) score 1-2 (odds ratios [ORs] ranged from 1.01 to 1.08) and return visits among patients with a CTAS score of 4-5 discharged at the index visit at some sites (ORs ranged from 1.00 to 1.06). INTERPRETATION: Emergency department crowding was not significantly associated with hospital admission within 7 days of the emergency department visit or mortality in children. However, it was associated with increased hospital admission at the index visit for the sickest children, and with return visits to the emergency department for those less sick

    Evaluation of a New Method of Fossil Retrodeformation by Symmetrization: Crania of Papionins (Primates, Cercopithecidae) As a Test Case

    Diagenetic distortion can be a major obstacle to collecting quantitative shape data on paleontological specimens, especially for three-dimensional geometric morphometric analysis. Here we utilize the recently -published algorithmic symmetrization method of fossil reconstruction and compare it to the more traditional reflection & averaging approach. In order to have an objective test of this method, five casts of a female cranium of Papio hamadryas kindae were manually deformed while the plaster hardened. These were subsequently “retrodeformed” using both algorithmic symmetrization and reflection & averaging and then compared to the original, undeformed specimen. We found that in all cases, algorithmic retrodeformation improved the shape of the deformed cranium and in four out of five cases, the algorithmically symmetrized crania were more similar in shape to the original crania than the reflected & averaged reconstructions. In three out of five cases, the difference between the algorithmically symmetrized crania and the original cranium could be contained within the magnitude of variation among individuals in a single subspecies of Papio. Instances of asymmetric distortion, such as breakage on one side, or bending in the axis of symmetry, were well handled, whereas symmetrical distortion remained uncorrected. This technique was further tested on a naturally deformed and fossilized cranium of Paradolichopithecus arvernensis. Results, based on a principal components analysis and Procrustes distances, showed that the algorithmically symmetrized Paradolichopithecus cranium was more similar to other, less-deformed crania from the same species than was the original. These results illustrate the efficacy of this method of retrodeformation by algorithmic symmetrization for the correction of asymmetrical distortion in fossils. Symmetrical distortion remains a problem for all currently developed methods of retrodeformation

    Solar flare-related eruptions followed by long-lasting occultation of the emission in the He II 304 A line and in microwaves

    Plasma with a temperature close to the chromospheric one is ejected in solar eruptions. Such plasma can occult some part of emission of compact sources in active regions as well as quiet solar areas. Absorption phenomena can be observed in the microwave range as the so-called 'negative bursts' and also in the He II 304 A line. The paper considers three eruptive events associated with rather powerful flares. Parameters of absorbing material of an eruption are estimated from multi-frequency records of a 'negative burst' in one event. 'Destruction' of an eruptive filament and its dispersion like a cloud over a huge area observed as a giant depression of the 304 A line emission has been revealed in a few events.     Polymorphisms in CYP1B1, GSTM1, GSTT1 and GSTP1, and susceptibility to breast cancer

    Polymorphisms in the cytochrome P450 1B1 (CYP1B1) and glutathione S-transferase (GST) drug metabolic enzymes, which are responsible for metabolic activation/detoxification of estrogen and environmental carcinogens, were analyzed for their association with breast cancer risk in 541 cases and 635 controls from a North Carolina population. Each polymorphism, altering the catalytic function of their respective enzymes, was analyzed in Caucasian and African-American women. As reported in previous studies, individual polymorphisms did not significantly impact breast cancer risk in either Caucasian or African-American women. However, African-American women exhibited a trend towards a protective effect when they had at least one CYP1B1 119S allele (OR=0.53; 95% CI=0.20–1.40) and increased risk for those women harboring at least one CYP1B1 432V allele (OR=5.52; 95% CI=0.50–61.37). Stratified analyses demonstrated significant interactions in younger (age ≤60) Caucasian women with the CYP1B1 119SS genotype (OR=3.09; 95% CI=1.22–7.84) and younger African-American women with the GSTT1 null genotype (OR=4.07; 95% CI=1.12–14.80). A notable trend was also found in Caucasian women with a history of smoking and at least one valine allele at GSTP1 114 (OR=2.12; 95% CI=1.02–4.41). In Caucasian women, the combined GSTP1 105IV/VV and CYP1B1 119AA genotypes resulted in a near 2-fold increase in risk (OR=1.96; 95% CI=1.04–3.72) and the three way combination of GSTP1 105IV/VV, CYP1B1 119AS/SS and GSTT1 null genotypes resulted in an almost 4-fold increase in risk (OR=3.97; 95% CI=1.27–12.40). These results suggest the importance of estrogen/carcinogen metabolic enzymes in the etiology of breast cancer, especially in women before the age of 60, as well as preventative measures such as smoking cessation
