Octopus fishery is gaining momentum in India especially along the north-west coast. The major centres in Mumbai where octopi are landed by trawlers are New Ferry Wharf, Sassoon docks and Versova. Cephalopods comprise about 10.5% of trawl landings of Maharashtra with octopus contributing 7.1% (CMFRI, 2006)

The culture of finfishes in cages has been practiced for years in countries like Cambodia, Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and Hongkong. Cage was first used as a holding facility for fish. True cage culture was said to have started in 1243 in China. Use of modern cage materials like synthetic nets, woods and metals started in early 1960’s. The size and shape of the cages are very important for the growth and production of the fishes/ shell fishes living inside it. The design will vary depending on the selected site. The constructed cage must withstand the force of wind and wave while holding the stock safely. The cage must be safe, secure and easy to manage. Circular cage bags make the most efficient use of materials, and thus have the lowest costs per unit volume. Shape is likely to influence effective stocking densities and swimming behaviour, which in turn can influence production. Fish cages can be constructed from a variety of materials. All materials used for the cage should be durable, nontoxic, and rustproof

Unusual landing of “Koth” Otolithoides biauritus by mini trawler at Versova, Mumbai.

A mini trawler landed an unusual catch of 103 numbers of “Koth” in the size range 770-1050mm each weighing between 2.5 to 5.0kg from a depth of 30 meters, at a distance of 25km off Mumbai, around the fishing grounds of Dahanu and Satpati

Record of complete albinism in marine catfish, Osteogeneiosus militaris (Linnaeus, 1758), landed at Mumbai

Albinism is due to one of several gene mutations that affect the normal pigmentation. There are various degrees of albinism. True albino or amelanistic animals lack melanin and are white with unpigmented pink eyes

Observations on a shoal of the Javanese Cownose Ray Rhinoptera javanica landed at New Ferry Wharf, Mumbai

Landing of shoals of Javanese Cownose Ray, Rhinoptera javanica, is not observed normally. Shoals of these fishes are generally neither sighted nor captured. On 9th December 2005, a shoal consisting of 28 specimens was caught by a single trawler based at New Ferry Wharf, which is very rare and probably the first recorded from this region. Similar shoals were reported earlier on two occasions from the Gulf of Mannar. The size range of the fishes in the shoal ranged from 98 to 99 cm in disc width for males and between 100 and 104 cm for females. The catch is very significant since all the females caught were pregnant with fully-grown embryos without yolk and the males were all mature with calcified claspers. The total weight of the shoal was 425 Kg and the catch fetched a price of Rs. 400/piece. The embryo also fetched a good price at Rs. 60/piece. Occurrence and capture of such shoals are interesting as they throw more light on the abundance, size at maturity and breeding season

The record size for the giant tiger prawn Penaeus monodon Fabricius

A giant sized P. monodon measuring 363 mm in total length and weighing 440 g was obtained at Bombay. A giant penacid prawn Penaeus monodon Fabricius, commercially known as 'giant tiger', 'tiger' or 'jumbo' prawn and locally called 'Jinga', was collected at New Ferry Wharf landing centre from a mechanized shrimp trawler operating in 50-60 m depth off Janjeera- Murud coast on 16-9-'89. The present recorded size of P. monodon appears to be the largest not only for the penaeid prawns alone but for all other species of prawn

This chapter examines the impact of participation in financial education seminars on the desired retirement age of individuals and on their expected levels of retirement income. Individuals were found to change their retirement goals after attendance in such a seminar. In addition, participants also reported that they planned to change their retirement saving behavior based on knowledge gained at the seminar. Women were much more likely to alter their retirement goals and saving behavior. Using information on seminars conducted by TIAA-CREF, and survey data on the participants, the authors estimate the determinants of changes in retirement goals and saving behavior

Evaluation of losartan plus hydrochlorothiazide combination therapy against amlodipine monotherapy in patients of hypertension

Background: Microalbuminuria has been shown to predict cardiovascular disease (CVD) in patients with hypertension. Recently the FDC of losartan and hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) has been reported to be effective for achieving a target BP level and also improvement in cardiovascular prognosis. The present study was conducted to compare effect of losartan plus hydrochlorothiazide combination therapy and high dose amlodipine monotherapy on blood pressure and microalbuminuria. Methods: Total 184 patients with hypertension were randomly allocated to two groups. The patients in group 1 received Amlodipine 5 mg orally for first 4 weeks. The  patients  from  group  2  received  losartan  50  mg  orally  for  first  4  weeks. Patients  in  group  1  were  titrated  to  amlodipine  10  mg  orally  for next 4 weeks. The patients in group 2 were titrated to FDC of losartan (50 mg) plus HCTZ (12.5 mg) for next 4 weeks. Follow–up visits were scheduled at 4 weeks and 8 weeks. Pulse rate, sSBP and sDBP were estimated at each follow–up. Microalbuminuria was estimated at 8 weeks. Results: There was no significant difference in mean change in sSBP, sDBP and pulse rate between two treatment groups (p>0.05). There was greater reduction in microalbuminuria in group 2 patients (p<0.0001). The adverse effects such as flushing and lower extremity oedema were significantly more in amlodipine group (p<0.05).Conclusions: Losartan plus HCTZ has similar effect on BP, better safety profile and superior effect on microalbuminuria level  reduction
