    Context: Sirtuins (SIRTs) are NAD+-dependent deacetylases, cellular sensors to detect energy availability, and modulate metabolic processes. SIRT1, the most studied family member, influences a number of tissues including adipose tissue. Expression and activity of SIRT1 reduce with weight gain and increase in conditions of starvation. Objective: To focus on SIRT1 plasma concentrations in different conditions of adiposity and to correlate SIRT1 with fat content and distribution, energy homeostasis and inflammation in under-weight, normal-weight, and obese individuals. Materials and Methods: 21 patients with anorexia nervosa, 26 normal-weight and 75 patients with obesity were evaluated. Body fat composition by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, ultrasound liver adiposity, echocardiographic epicardial fat thickness (EFT), inflammatory (ESR, CRP, and fibrinogen), and metabolic (FPG, insulin, LDL- and HDL-cholesterol, triglycerides) parameters, calculated basal metabolic rate (BMR) and plasma SIRT1 (ELISA) were measured. Results: SIRT1 was significantly higher in anorexic patients compared to normal-weight and obese patients (3.27 ± 2.98, 2.27 ± 1.13, and 1.36 ± 1.31 ng/ml, respectively). Linear regression models for each predictor variable adjusted for age and sex showed that SIRT1 concentration was inversely and significantly correlated with EFT, fat mass %, liver fat content, BMR, weight, BMI, WC, LDL-cholesterol, insulin, ESR. Stepwise multiple regression analysis revealed that age and EFT were the best independent correlates of SIRT1 (β = -0.026 ± 0.011, p = 0.025, and β = -0.516 ± 0.083, p < 0.001, respectively). Conclusions: Plasma SIRT1 shows a continuous pattern that inversely follows the whole spectrum of adiposity. SIRT1 significantly associates with EFT, a strong index of visceral fat phenotype, better than other indexes of adiposity studied here

    Risk-based Regulation of Russian Universities: Risk Indicators and Their Use for State Control Purposes

    Get PDF
    The article is devoted to the identification and analysis of indicators of the risk of low-quality education in Russian universities. In 2021-2022, the approach to higher education inspections has changed significantly: accreditation monitoring has been introduced, it includes eight indicators. However, this monitoring was formed by the expert community, so the results of its testing in practice have yet to be analyzed. The purpose of this work is to identify risk factors for estimation the likelihood of violations of mandatory requirements by universities, and to develop recommendations for expanding the set of risk indicators included in accreditation monitoring. The main methods used in the work are methods of quantitative analysis, including econometric modeling. The novelty of the work is determined by the approach used: risk indicators are identified using a quantitative econometric analysis of data on the observed characteristics and results of inspections of Russian universities in 2015-2019. The results of the study indicate the possibility of supplementing the set of accreditation monitoring indicators. As additional indicators, first of all, various characteristics of research activities of universities can be used. Such a change in accreditation monitoring will increase its effectiveness as a preliminary assessment tool used in the implementation of a risk-based approach to state control. In cases where the assessment of even extended monitoring is ambiguous, the quantitative model proposed by the authors can be used

    Magnetic properties of the antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 chain system β\beta-TeVO4_{4}

    Full text link
    The magnetic susceptibility and magnetization of high quality single crystal beta-TeVO4 are reported. We show that this compound, made of weakly coupled infinite chains of VO5 pyramids sharing corners, behaves as a S = 1/2 one-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet. From magnetic experiments we deduce the intrachain antiferromagnetic coupling constant J/kB = 21.4 ±\pm 0.2 K. Below 5 K a series of three phase transitions at 2.26, 3.28 and 4.65 K is observed.Comment: Accepted for publication in Physical Review

    The Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Natural Population Movement in the Ural Federal District

    Full text link
    COVID-19 pandemic led to high levels of excess mortality nearly in all world regions. Since the second quarter of 2020, mortality rates are increasing. The widespread of coronavirus infection worsened the situation with natural population decrease in the Ural Federal District. Natural growth, despite its certain reduction, was maintained only in Khanty-Mansi and Yamal-Nenets Autonomous okrugs. In most regions of the Ural Federal District in 2020-2021, there was a slight decrease in fertility rates. However, the situation with mortality in the district developed more sharply; increase in crude mortality was 34.2 % up to 15.7 ‰. The highest mortality growth was recorded in Khanty-Mansi autonomous okrug (+41.7 %), while natural population growth has remained. The most dramatic situation persists in Kurgan oblast, where crude mortality rate in 2021 was 20.4 %. Determining shares of deaths from COVID-19 in additional losses in 2020 and 2021 compared to 2019 indicates a violation of the coding rules when choosing the primary cause of death, which does not allow to assess the true picture of the causes of death in the Ural Federal District.Пандемия COVID-19 привела к высоким уровням избыточной смертности практически во всех регионах страны. Со второго квартала 2020 г. показатели смертности демонстрируют рост. Распространение коронавирусной инфекции усугубило ситуацию с естественной убылью населения в УрФО. Естественный прирост, несмотря не некоторое его снижение, сохранился лишь в ХМАО и ЯНАО. В большинстве регионов УрФО в 2020-2021 гг. произошло некоторое снижение показателей рождаемости. Но ситуация со смертностью населения в округе развивалась более драматично, рост общей смертности составил 34,2 %, достигнув 15,7 ‰. Наибольший прирост смертности отмечен в ХМАО (41,7 %), тем не менее, в регионе сохранился естественный прирост населения. Самая драматичная ситуация сохраняется в Курганской области, где в 2021 г. показатель смертности составил 20,4 ‰. Определение доли умерших от COVID-19 в дополнительных потерях в 2020 и 2021 гг. по сравнению с 2019 г. указывает на нарушение правил кодирования при выборе первоначальной причины смерти, что не позволяет оценить истинную картину причин смерти в УрФО

    Systems biology analysis of the WOX5 gene and its functions in the root stem cell niche

    WUSCHEL RELATED HOMEOBOX 5 (WOX5) gene encodes the transcription factor, which is one of the key regulators, maintaining structure and functioning of the stem cell niche in plant root tips. Protein WOX5 is expressed in the quiescent center of the root apical meristem, preventing differentiation of columella initials and altogether with SCR, SHR, PLT1 and PLT2 participating in the control of differentiation of other root meristem initials. However, the details of WOX5 functioning are unclear. The WOX5 protein belongs to WUSCHEL related homeobox (WOX) family, the founder of which is the transcription factor WUSCHEL (WUS) providing maintenance of the stem cell niche in the shoot apical meristem. WOX5 and WUS diverged from a common ancestor at the base of angiosperms, which resulted in a specialization of shoot and root stem cell niches. However, the problem of WOX5 structural and functional divergence during angiosperm evolution was poorly addressed. In this review we present a systems biology analysis of the WOX5 gene to reveal specific features of its evolution and functioning. To this end, we performed a phylogenetic analysis on 62 publicly available WOX5 amino acid sequences, generalized published data about WOX5 expression domain in Arabidopsis and other species and its role in development, integrated the results of experiments on identification of primary and secondary targets for this transcription factor. Data on possible mechanisms of direct and indirect regulation of WOX5 expression were discussed. Particularly, we performed the analysis of WOX5 promoter regions from 30 species. Possible direct regulators of the WOX5 gene expression were proposed based on the presence of putative binding sites for the candidate transcription factors in conserved WOX5 promoter regions

    A 64-year-old female with a family history of hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) was hospitalized due to complaints of dyspnea during light physical exertion and leg edema. HHT was diagnosed at 20 y.o., recurrent nasal bleeding started at age 52, bleedings severity was aggravated by not completely compensated hypertension. At the age of 60, after a massive hemorrhage, she noted the onset of dyspnea, edema, ascites. Diuretics and iron preparations improved her well-being, but from that period onward her heart failure worsened after each massive blood loss. The last major bleeding was before the present hospitalization (Hgb 67 g/l), after which heart failure symptoms significantly deteriorated. Echocardiography showed preserved left ventricular ejection fraction, but revealed high pulmonary hypertension (systolic pulmonary artery pressure 69 mmHg). Chest computed tomography (CT) with contrast showed no evidence of pulmonary embolism, but interstitial lung lesions were detected. Pulse therapy with glucocorticosteroids did not result in positive dynamics at the control CT scan, which allowed to reject a separate interstitial lung disease. As a result of cardiotropic and diuretic therapy, as well as correction of anemia, the patient's condition improved. Macitentan was administered, but the patient refused from it because one of possible side effects was anemia. A year later the patient diedfrom acute progression of pulmonary hypertension. According to the literature, pulmonary hypertension in HHT can have a significant impact on the prognosis and requires timely diagnosis and treatment. Interstitial lung lesions are a manifestation of the underlying disease and does not require special treatment
