    Optic nerve sheath meningioma: a case report

    A case of a 75-year old male with right-sided exopthalmos is presented. Outside proptosis of the right eye was initially observed 6 years ago. Opthalmological and endocrinological clinical examination as well as laboratory tests revealed no pathology from optic nerve disc, optic bulb and thyroid related hormones. MRI study demonstrated an optic nerve meningioma. The key imaging findings and the differential diagnosis were discussed in this present paper

    The history of women in medicine has been marked by many challenges and achievements. Although the role of women in the "art of healing" can be traced back many centuries, only males are traditionally highlighted in history. Across antiquity, access to medical education was denied to females. Dermatology is a medical specialty in which women displayed particular skill and proficiency. Gradually, determination and competence allowed women to lay claim in an essentially male-dominated world. This article presents a brief review of the performance, progress and achievements of women in the history of medicine and dermatology

    Stochastic variation of transcript abundance in C57BL/6J mice

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Transcripts can exhibit significant variation in tissue samples from inbred laboratory mice. We have designed and carried out a microarray experiment to examine transcript variation across samples from adipose, heart, kidney, and liver tissues of C57BL/6J mice and to partition variation into within-mouse and between-mouse components. Within-mouse variance captures variation due to heterogeneity of gene expression within tissues, RNA-extraction, and array processing. Between-mouse variance reflects differences in transcript abundance between genetically identical mice.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The nature and extent of transcript variation differs across tissues. Adipose has the largest total variance and the largest within-mouse variance. Liver has the smallest total variance, but it has the most between-mouse variance. Genes with high variability can be classified into groups with correlated patterns of expression that are enriched for specific biological functions. Variation between mice is associated with circadian rhythm, growth hormone signaling, immune response, androgen regulation, lipid metabolism, and the extracellular matrix. Genes showing correlated patterns of within-mouse variation are also associated with biological functions that largely reflect heterogeneity of cell types within tissues.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Genetically identical mice can experience different individual outcomes for medically important traits. Variation in gene expression observed between genetically identical mice can identify functional classes of genes that are likely to vary in the absence of experimental perturbations, can inform experimental design decisions, and provides a baseline for the interpretation of gene expression data in interventional studies. The extent of transcript variation among genetically identical mice underscores the importance of stochastic and micro-environmental factors and their phenotypic consequences.</p

    Research in signal transduction aims to identify the functions of different signaling pathways in physiological and pathological states. Traditional techniques using biochemical, genetic or cell biological approaches have made important contributions to our understanding of cellular signaling. However, the single-gene approach does not take into account the full complexity of cell signaling. With the availability of omics techniques, great progress has been made in understanding signaling networks.     Oxidative stress is an important pathophysiological. mechanism in nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). To assess whether there are relationships between oxidative stress and antioxidant enzymes in the development of NASH, we investigated oxidative stress by measuring serum malondialdehyde (MDA) and nitric oxide (NO) and antioxidant status by measuring serum glutathione (GSH), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), glutathione reductase (GR), and superoxide dismutase (SOD). The study included 18 patients (13 men, 5 women; mean age 42 yr) with biopsy proven NASH and 16 healthy volunteers (10 men, 6 women; mean age 38 yr). Serum levels of MDA, NO, GSH, GSH-Px, GR and SOD were determined by spectrophotometric methods. Serum levels (mean +/-SD) of MDA (6.7+/-1.6 vs 2.8+/-1.7 nmol/ml, p 0.0001), NO (135+/-28 vs 113+/-35 mmol/L, p 0.04), GSH (919+/-137 vs 770+/-128 mmol/L, p 0.003) were increased in patients with NASH vs controls. Serum levels of GSH-Px (1063+/-152 vs 1000+/-94 U/L) and GR (47+/-22 vs 40+/-21 U/L) were not significantly different in the patients vs controls. However, the serum level of SOD (1.24+/-0.32 vs 1.51+/-0.37 U/ml, p: 0.04) was significantly decreased. Impaired antioxidant defense mechanisms may be an important factor in the pathogenesis of NASH. Treatment approaches that affect the antioxidant enzymes may be beneficial in patients with NASH
