    Resonance Model for π\piN Scattering and η\eta-Meson Production in the s11_{11} Channel

    A model for Ï€\piN scattering and η\eta-meson production in the S11_{11} channel is presented. The model includes Ï€\piN-scattering Born terms as well as the N∗^*{} resonances S11_{11}(1535) and S11_{11}(1610). The TT-matrix is computed in the KK-matrix approximation. The parameters of the model are determined by fitting the elastic Ï€\piN-scattering TT-matrix to empirical data. We find an excellent fit for all energies up to s\sqrt{s} = 1.75 GeV.     Minimal model for aeolian sand dunes

    We present a minimal model for the formation and migration of aeolian sand dunes. It combines a perturbative description of the turbulent wind velocity field above the dune with a continuum saltation model that allows for saturation transients in the sand flux. The latter are shown to provide the characteristic length scale. The model can explain the origin of important features of dunes, such as the formation of a slip face, the broken scale invariance, and the existence of a minimum dune size. It also predicts the longitudinal shape and aspect ratio of dunes and heaps, their migration velocity and shape relaxation dynamics. Although the minimal model employs non-local expressions for the wind shear stress as well as for the sand flux, it is simple enough to serve as a very efficient tool for analytical and numerical investigations and to open up the way to simulations of large scale desert topographies.Comment: 19 pages, 22 figure

    Corridors of barchan dunes: stability and size selection

    Barchans are crescentic dunes propagating on a solid ground. They form dune fields in the shape of elongated corridors in which the size and spacing between dunes are rather well selected. We show that even very realistic models for solitary dunes do not reproduce these corridors. Instead, two instabilities take place. First, barchans receive a sand flux at their back proportional to their width while the sand escapes only from their horns. Large dunes proportionally capture more than they loose sand, while the situation is reversed for small ones: therefore, solitary dunes cannot remain in a steady state. Second, the propagation speed of dunes decreases with the size of the dune: this leads -- through the collision process -- to a coarsening of barchan fields. We show that these phenomena are not specific to the model, but result from general and robust mechanisms. The length scales needed for these instabilities to develop are derived and discussed. They turn out to be much smaller than the dune field length.     Analysis of resonance multipoles from polarization observables in eta photoproduction

    A combined analysis of new eta photoproduction data for total and differential cross sections, target asymmetry and photon asymmetry is presented. Using a few reasonable assumptions we perform the first model-independent analysis of the E0+, E2- and M2- eta photoproduction multipoles. Making use of the well-known A3/2 helicity amplitude of the D13(1520) state we extract its branching ratio to the eta-N channel, Gamma(eta,N)/Gamma = (0.08 +- 0.01)%. At higher energies, we show that the photon asymmetry is extremely sensitive to small multipoles that are excited by photons in the helicity 3/2 state. The new GRAAL photon asymmetry data at higher energy show a clear signal of the F15(1680) excitation which permits extracting an F15(1680)->eta,N branching ratio of (0.15 +0.35 -0.10)%.Comment: 14 pages of LATEX including 7 postscript figure

    Abstract. QuiKey is an interaction approach that offers interactive fine grained access to structured information sources in a light weight user interface. It is designed to be highly interaction efficient for searching, browsing and authoring semantic knowledge bases as well as incremen-tally constructing complex queries. Empirical evaluation using a compar-ative GOMS Analysis and a user study confirm interaction efficiency.

    Quasifree eta photoproduction from nuclei and medium modifications of resonances

    We investigate the sensitivity of the differential cross section, recoil nucleon polarization and the photon asymmetry to changes in the elementary amplitude, medium modifications of the resonance (S11,D13)(S_{11},D_{13}) masses, as well as nuclear target effects. All calculations are performed within a relativistic plane wave impulse approximation formalism resulting in analytical expressions for all observables. The spin observables are shown to be unique tools to study subtle effects that are not accessible by only looking at the unpolarized differential cross section.Comment: 27 pages, 8 figures, Revtex, To be published in Phys.     A unitary model for meson-nucleon scattering

    In an effective Lagrangian model employing the K-matrix approximation we extract nucleon resonance parameters. To this end we analyze simultaneously all available data for reactions involving the final states πN\pi N, ππN\pi\pi N, ηN\eta N and KΛK \Lambda in the energy range mN+mπ≤s≤1.9m_N + m_{\pi} \le \sqrt s \le 1.9 GeV. The background contributions are generated consistently from the relevant Feynman amplitudes, thus significantly reducing the number of free parameters.Comment: Revised version. 60 pages, 17 figures.
