    Schizotypy is associated with difficulties detecting emotional facial expressions

    People with schizophrenia or subclinical schizotypal traits exhibit impaired recognition of facial expressions. However, it remains unclear whether the detection of emotional facial expressions is impaired in people with schizophrenia or high levels of schizotypy. The present study examined whether the detection of emotional facial expressions would be associated with schizotypy in a non-clinical population after controlling for the effects of IQ, age, and sex. Participants were asked to respond to whether all faces were the same as quickly and as accurately as possible following the presentation of angry or happy faces or their anti-expressions among crowds of neutral faces. Anti-expressions contain a degree of visual change that is equivalent to that of normal emotional facial expressions relative to neutral facial expressions and are recognized as neutral expressions. Normal expressions of anger and happiness were detected more rapidly and accurately than their anti-expressions. Additionally, the degree of overall schizotypy was negatively correlated with the effectiveness of detecting normal expressions versus anti-expressions. An emotion–recognition task revealed that the degree of positive schizotypy was negatively correlated with the accuracy of facial expression recognition. These results suggest that people with high levels of schizotypy experienced difficulties detecting and recognizing emotional facial expressions

    Gauging the impact of gender grammaticization in different languages:application of a linguistic-visual paradigm

    Employing a linguistic-visual paradigm, we investigated whether the grammaticization of gender information impacts readers’ gender representations. French and German were taken as comparative languages, taking into account the male gender bias associated to both languages, as well as the comparative gender biases associated to their plural determiners (French: les [generic] vs. German: die [morphologically feminine]). Bilingual speakers of French and German had to judge whether a pair of facial images representing two men or a man and a woman could represent a gender stereotypical role noun prime (e.g., nurses). The prime was presented in the masculine plural form with or without a plural determiner. Results indicated that the overt grammaticization of the male gender in the masculine form dominated the representation of the role nouns (though interpretable as generic). However, the effect of the determiner was not found, indicating that only gender information associated to a human reference role noun had impacted readers’ representations. The results, discussed in the framework of the thinking-for-speaking hypothesis, demonstrated that linguistic-visual paradigms are well-suited to gauge the impact of both stereotype information and grammaticization when processing role nouns

    Altering male-dominant representations:a study on nominalized adjectives and participles in first and second language German

    The generic use of masculine plural forms in grammatical gender languages has been criticized for activating unequal gender representations that are male dominant. The present study examined whether the recently introduced gender-neutral forms of nominalized adjectives and participles in German provide references that induce more balanced representations. We used cross-linguistic differences as a means to illustrate the flexibility of the gender representation system and investigated both native and nonnative (French–German bilinguals) speakers of German. Although a masculine bias persisted when participants read role nouns in the masculine plural form, the study suggests that the usage of nominalized forms can attenuate this male bias, even for nonnative speakers. The results of the study provide further support for the use of gender-neutral language

    Gender inferences: Grammatical features and their impact on the representation of gender in bilinguals

    We investigated the effects of grammatical and stereotypical gender information on the comprehension of human referent role nouns among bilinguals of a grammatical (French) and a natural gender language (English). In a sentence evaluation paradigm, participants judged the acceptability of a gender-specific sentence referring to either a group of women or men following a sentence containing the plural form of a role noun female (e.g., social workers), male (e.g., surgeons) or neutral (e.g., musicians) in stereotypicality. L1 French and L1 English bilinguals were tested both in French and English. The results showed that bilinguals construct mental representations of gender associated with the language of the task they are engaged in, shifting representations as they switch languages. Specifically, in French, representations were male-dominant (i.e., induced by the masculine form), whereas in English, they were stereotype-based. Furthermore, the results showed that the extent to which representations shifted was modulated by participants' proficiency in their L2, with highly proficient L2 participants resembling native speakers of the L2 and less proficient L2 participants being influenced more by their native languag

    Grammatical gender affects gender perception:Evidence for the structural-feedback hypothesis

    Two experiments assessed the extent to which grammatical gender provides a predictive basis for bilinguals’ judgments about perceptual gender. In both experiments, French-English bilinguals and native English monolinguals were consecutively presented with images of objects manipulated for their (i) conceptual gender association and (ii) grammatical gender category and were instructed to make a decision on a subsequent target face. The experiments differed in the implicitness of the association between the object primes and target faces. Results revealed that when prior knowledge sources such as conceptual gender can be strategically used to resolve the immediate task (Experiment 1), this information was readily extracted and employed. However, grammatical gender demonstrated a more robust and persisting effect on the bilinguals’ judgments, indicating that the retrieval of obligatory grammatical information is automatic and modulates perceptual judgments (Experiment 2). These results suggest that grammar enables an effective and robust means to access prior knowledge which may be independent of task requirements

    Secular Change of Fog Frequency in Some Japanese Cities

    This paper deals with statistical analyses to clarify the frequency of fog occurrence in some cities in Japan (Fig.l). In this work, the data of Japan Meteorological Agency were used to analyze at about 80 points in Japan (Tab.l) between 1951 to 2000. The main results of this study were summarized as follows. 1. It is tendency in fog occurrence to present the regional and seasonal characteristics during recent 50 years (Fig.2, 3 & 4). 2. Judging from the regional and seasonal characteristics in occurrence frequency of fog in Japan, the main causes of fog are advection type as well as radiation one (Fig.4). 3. The secular change of annual number days with fog at each station tends to decrease gradually in many points, especially in inland or basin stations (Fig.5). 4. In spite of above mention, the annual number days with fog have slightly increased at the stations along the coast of Pacific in Northeastern Japan. 5. It will be able to point out that the factors of decreasing of number days with fog in secular change are equal to lower the value of relative humidity or to rise the extreme value of daily minimum temperature (Fig.6)

    OBJECTIVE: The course of neurocognitive deficits in schizophrenia has not yet been established. Therefore, we followed patients with first-episode schizophrenia to verify the course of these deficits. METHODS:In Study 1, tests of neurocognitive functioning were administered to patients with first-episode schizophrenia (FE group) every 6 months. Of the 26 patients who completed the baseline assessment, 19 completed a 6-month follow-up, and 13 completed a 1-year follow-up. In Study 2, 19 patients in FE group at 6-months when the neuropsychological measures was less influenced by psychotic symptoms and other patients who experienced schizophrenia 5-years earlier (5-year group) were compared. RESULTS:In Study 1, verbal memory, motor speed, and executive functions significantly improved at the 1-year follow-up. In Study 2, patients in 5-year group performed worse in verbal memory and executive functions than patients in FE at 6-month group, but marginally but significantly better in verbal fluency. CONCLUSIONS:Verbal memory, executive functions, and verbal fluency were significantly different between 5-year group and FE at 6-month group, and may indicate progression of schizophrenia. Executive functions may reflect the state of psychosis. Working memory and processing speed which did not change significantly from onset are needed to verify the course in further research.博士(医学)・甲610号・平成26年3月17
