    Incidence of flexion distraction injuries of thoraco lumbar spine

    Background: Thoraco-lumbar spine fractures form majority of spine fractures and is an important cause of morbidity. However, comprehensive data regarding epidemiological pattern of trauma patients with spinal fractures are scarce. Many epidemiological reports about spinal fractures focus on osteoporosis as an etiologic factor. But in Indian population more important etiological factors are road traffic accidents and falls from height. Studies concerning only operatively treated patients with spinal fractures show selective and biased data that might be useful for capacity planning in hospitals or evaluating results of operative treatment, but not for epidemiological purposes. Methods: Among 86 consecutive patients with thoracic or lumbar fractures attending the out-patient department or Emergency department of Sree Gokulam Medical College, Trivandrum were enrolled in the study.  All patients with fractures of the thoracic or lumbar spine were enrolled in this study.Results: Flexion distraction injuries are the second commonest unstable thoracolumbar spine injuries.Conclusions: This study is a prospective cohort study of the epidemiological aspects and pattern of injury and treatment in thoraco-lumbar spine fractures at a tertiary care referral center. A total of 86 patients were enrolled in the study. The most common fracture pattern seen in this study was compression fractures (24.4%) which are stable. This was followed by stable burst fractures (23.2%, unstable burst fractures (18.6%), translational injuries (fracture-dislocations) (16.3%), flexion-distraction injuries (13.9%) and chance fractures (3.5%)

    In this paper, a new class of distribution namely “the inverse Kies distribution” is proposed and some of its important aspects are studied by deriving expressions for its percentile measures, raw moments, reliability measures etc. The maximum likelihood estimation of the parameters of the distribution is discussed and the distribution has been fitted to certain real life data sets. The asymptotic behaviour of maximum likelihood estimators of the parameters of the distribution are also studied by using simulated data sets

    Intra annual Variability of the Arabian Sea high salinity water mass in the South Eastern Arabian Sea during 2016 17

    Intra-annual variability of the Arabian Sea high salinity water mass (ASHSW) in the South Eastern Arabian Sea (SEAS) and Gulf of Mannar (GoM) are addressed in this paper by utilisng the monthly missions carried out onboard INS Sagardhwani during 2016-17. Our observations revealed that the ASHSW was evident along the SEAS irrespective of seasons, whereas in the GoM the presence of ASHSW was observed during winter. The processes such as downwelling/up-welling, coastal currents, intrusion of low saline waters, stratification are clearly affects the spreading of the ASHSW. The characteristics such as core salinity value, depth and thickness of ASHSW exhibited remarkable spatio-temporal variability. Lateral mixing with the low saline waters in the region during winter reduces its core salinity. The intrusion of low saline waters was clearly seen upto 15 ON but the intrusion of low saline waters is not flowing through the GoM. The interface between the ASHSW and the prevailing low saline waters showed strong horizontal gradients of salinity. The presence of the ASHSW makes difference in the SLD and the below layer gradient which is sufficient to complicate or influence sound transmission. The spatio temporal variability of the ASHSW and its acoustic relevance are documented in this paper

    Nickel-substituted Lithium-Zinc-Manganese Ferritefor the Suppression of Radiated Emission Noise

    Nickel-substituted lithium-zinc-manganese ferrite of the composition,  Li0.25-x/4 Zn0.5-x/2NixMn 0.1Fe2.15-x/4O4 where x = 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5 have been investigated for electromagnetic interference(EMI)  suppression to meet the EMI standards. Various compositions were prepared by theconventional ceramic technique using mixed oxides. The ferrites were characterised for theirstructural, electrical, and magnetic, properties. The ferrites were found to posses high saturationmagnetisation, permeability, Curie temperature and resistivity, which are the desirablecharacteristics for noise-suppression application. The operating frequency of the ferrite rangedfrom 1 MHz–700 MHz, which is high enough for absorbing the electrical fast transients andradiated emission noise suppression as shown for three devices–currency counting machine,energy meter and dc-dc converter where the radiated emission noise  is suppressed from 10 dBto 20 dB. In energy meter where the electrical fast transients (EFTs) are suppressed up to 5.5kV, 4.5 kV, 3.5 kV, 2.8 kV, 1.6 kV, and 1.2 kV with composition x = 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, respectively.This material has tremendous scope of application in military equipment  to comply the EMIrequirements of the military standards

    Phytochemical Screening and Profiling of Secondary Metabolites of Annona Muricata Bark

    Screening of phytochemicals is a precious stair in the detection of bioactive principles present in medicinal plants and may lead to novel drug discovery). In present study aimed to investigate the preliminary phytochemical screening, fluorescence, and spectroscopic characterization in Annona muricata bark. The qualitative analysis of aqueous, hexane, ethanol, hydro-ethanolic and methanol extracts of Annona muricata bark were investigated. Among the various extracts, the hydro-ethanolic extract of Annona muricata bark contains a higher concentration of phytochemicals than other extracts and is used for subsequent studies. Quantitative analysis revealed that the Annona muricata bark has contain significant amount of phenol, flavonoids, saponin, tannin and alkaloids were present. Histochemical analysis further confirmed the presence of phytochemicals in Annona muricata bark. UV-VIS spectral analysis we can confirm that the presence of tannins and flavonoids. FTIR analysis had confirmed the presence of alcohol, phenol, aromatic, carboxylic acid, and aliphatic amines.  Results of the study concluded that rich source of phytochemicals in Annona muricata bark is responsible for their therapeutic effects. So, it is recommended as a plant of phytopharmaceutical importance and further studies are needed with these plants to evaluate their pharmacological potentials of the bioactive compounds responsible for their bio-activities and other medicinal values

    The role of BRCA1 in breast cancer metastasis is a less explored area that might have importance in increased aggressiveness of BRCA1 defective triple negative cancers. The possible influence of BRCA1 on apico basal polarity and ezrin, radixin and meosin (ERM) proteins are discussed in this review as a reason for cell metastasis. This might help in developing antimetastatic drugs that could help for better prognosis in BRCA1 defective breast cancers
