Weighted Bergman kernels and virtual Bergman kernels
We introduce the notion of "virtual Bergman kernel" and apply it to the
computation of the Bergman kernel of "domains inflated by Hermitian balls", in
particular when the base domain is a bounded symmetric domain.Comment: 12 pages. One-hour lecture for graduate students, SCV 2004, August

The Volume of some Non-spherical Horizons and the AdS/CFT Correspondence
We calculate the volumes of a large class of Einstein manifolds, namely
Sasaki-Einstein manifolds which are the bases of Ricci-flat affine cones
described by polynomial embedding relations in C^n. These volumes are important
because they allow us to extend and test the AdS/CFT correspondence. We use
these volumes to extend the central charge calculation of Gubser (1998) to the
generalized conifolds of Gubser, Shatashvili, and Nekrasov (1999). These
volumes also allow one to quantize precisely the D-brane flux of the AdS
supergravity solution. We end by demonstrating a relationship between the
volumes of these Einstein spaces and the number of holomorphic polynomials
(which correspond to chiral primary operators in the field theory dual) on the
corresponding affine cone.Comment: 25 pp, LaTeX, 1 figure, v2: refs adde
Ultrafast carrier relaxation in GaN, In_(0.05)Ga_(0.95)N and an In_(0.05)Ga_(0.95)/In_(0.15)Ga_(0.85)N Multiple Quantum Well
Room temperature, wavelength non-degenerate ultrafast pump/probe measurements
were performed on GaN and InGaN epilayers and an InGaN multiple quantum well
structure. Carrier relaxation dynamics were investigated as a function of
excitation wavelength and intensity. Spectrally-resolved sub-picosecond
relaxation due to carrier redistribution and QW capture was found to depend
sensitively on the wavelength of pump excitation. Moreover, for pump
intensities above a threshold of 100 microJ/cm2, all samples demonstrated an
additional emission feature arising from stimulated emission (SE). SE is
evidenced as accelerated relaxation (< 10 ps) in the pump-probe data,
fundamentally altering the re-distribution of carriers. Once SE and carrier
redistribution is completed, a slower relaxation of up to 1 ns for GaN and
InGaN epilayers, and 660 ps for the MQW sample, indicates carrier recombination
through spontaneous emission.Comment: submitted to Phys. Rev.
Memory of the Unjamming Transition during Cyclic Tiltings of a Granular Pile
Discrete numerical simulations are performed to study the evolution of the
micro-structure and the response of a granular packing during successive
loading-unloading cycles, consisting of quasi-static rotations in the gravity
field between opposite inclination angles. We show that internal variables,
e.g., stress and fabric of the pile, exhibit hysteresis during these cycles due
to the exploration of different metastable configurations. Interestingly, the
hysteretic behaviour of the pile strongly depends on the maximal inclination of
the cycles, giving evidence of the irreversible modifications of the pile state
occurring close to the unjamming transition. More specifically, we show that
for cycles with maximal inclination larger than the repose angle, the weak
contact network carries the memory of the unjamming transition. These results
demonstrate the relevance of a two-phases description -strong and weak contact
networks- for a granular system, as soon as it has approached the unjamming
transition.Comment: 13 pages, 15 figures, soumis \`{a} Phys. Rev.
Stress and Strain in Flat Piling of Disks
We have created a flat piling of disks in a numerical experiment using the
Distinct Element Method (DEM) by depositing them under gravity. In the
resulting pile, we then measured increments in stress and strain that were
associated with a small decrease in gravity. We first describe the stress in
terms of the strain using isotropic elasticity theory. Then, from a
micro-mechanical view point, we calculate the relation between the stress and
strain using the mean strain assumption. We compare the predicted values of
Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio with those that were measured in the
numerical experiment.Comment: 9 pages, 1 table, 8 figures, and 2 pages for captions of figure

Young and thoughtless is a literature which deals with penalties for young offenders. It gives an overview of the current system of sanctions and to history in the legislation and measures relating to young offenders in Sweden. The purpose of this paper is to examine how our society handles young offenders. Why does our system of penalties the way they do? The focus of the work lies in the development of the sanctions and that it has moved from criminal to a more treatment-oriented society. The essay also takes up secure youth and how punishment and treatment united in institutions.
The results obtained in the paper is that the methods of treatment proved effective for the group of young offenders is cognitive-behavioral therapy-based programs and family-based interventions. The actions demonstrated work better than others, characterized by the focus on to influence the young person's way of thinking, feeling and behaving. That means it is more effective to give the kids some type of skilled therapy beyond a legal sanction. The essay also shows a development of different types of sanctions for young offenders because various criminal theories have been applied through time. And how society measures for young offenders has changed
